  • Adya discusses how our thinking mind creates the false sense of being separate from everything else when in fact there is no separation in reality. Excerpted from October 2, 2011, Palo Alto Meeting, “The Unified Expression of the All”: bit.ly/3TwPlPs

Quote from this Video: “We have been socialized into believing in our separation to such an extent that we even make things like enlightenment as something that’s over there, or God as something that’s over there and ‘other’-often a bigger, better version of a human being.” adyashanti.org

I've gotten into trauma healing, and I think that has helped me understand why our minds create a self image and why so many "seekers" have trouble in what is called enlightenment, or letting go of the mind and going back into the natural state of thoughtless happiness and non-separation. And yes, it is the natural state.
The thing is, the mind/ego is mostly a defense mechanism and attachment program created in childhood for the survival of the bodily vessel. The consciousness adopts language, identity, and self-image in order to navigate the survival needs of a child body and, sadly, most of us had neglectful parents and live in malformed societies whose acceptance and survival is conditioned upon adopting a fragmented, complex, and inauthentic self image.
To let go of the mind often means re-encountering the feelings of abandonment, neglect, loneliness, anger, bodily danger, and sadness of childhood experiences and living, instead, with a strange vulnerability and trust to have our hearts open, and our bodies unprotected by the mental "survival and attachment" programs of the childhood ego.
Let's not pretend that this is easy. Is it true that we're not the mind and body? I'd say yes. But is it easy to let go of the primal survival programming of the body-mind? Of course not, especially if there has been trauma, neglect, parental projections and expectations, etc.
“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." This is the struggle. To regain our innate openness, before we adopted a self image, means somehow transcending the survival instinct of the body in a world that has been feeling increasingly unsafe and unaccepting with every passing year. I'm not saying don't do it, I'm saying let's be realistic about what the ego is (a defense and attachment program) and why it's hard to let go of (to live defenseless and unattached as pure awareness).

This was an excellent way of explaining it. As someone who has lived with a complex form of diagnosed PTSD for the past couple decades of adulthood, it has been the biggest hurdle of abandoning the idea of identity

@@eb9450 I'm glad it resonated with you. I personally think "instant no-self" enlightenment teachings are irresponsible and out-of-touch, in the sense that many of us haven't even gotten a chance to develop a healthy, balanced identity in the first place. Then these teachers are telling people to destroy their sense of identity without any preparation of the psyche, the emotional body, the lifestyle, etc. To me, emotional healing and balance needs to come first, laying down a good foundation for realization. Good wishes on your path, and I hope healing the PTSD is integrated into it

Non duality is the natural state of reality. Separation is no-thing experiencing something.

Every single “problem,” every war, money, taxes, ever horror we see is the result of identifying with the mind, the separate self.
    Greed, hatred and delusion.

These days many people with bookish knowledge teach non-duality and land viewers in confusion. When questioned closely they get exposed. Personal experience of non-duality is such a rare blessing that one can never find them on social media.

    • @jonmustang
      @jonmustang 3 місяці тому +1

Yes, a rare blessing and yet also totally natural. We as babies felt some natural "enlightenment" because it takes 1-3 years typically for the mind to imagine that it is a body and is separate from the mother and the world. How cumbersome now as an adult for the mind to let go of its own imaginary self!

If we say there is no separation, what should we do with our compulsive thoughts? Or with the negative emotions we experience? Just notice as they arise in consciousness? To what extent are we "the thoughts themselves? Or the emotions we're experiencing?"

      A very good question.
Helen Hamilton suggests continuing to turn attention towards consciousness. Over and over and over. When washing the dishes, be aware of washing the dishes. When showering, be aware of showering. When folding laundry, be aware of folding laundry. Nisagardatta concurs. Repeatedly turn towards consciousness, be aware of awareness. It’s called practice for a reason too eh? ❤
As we become more interested in consciousness, thinking slows down and eventually disappears.
Not my experience as of yet but thoughts have slowed down and they are less believable.

Well, my experience I didn't want to ask my boss for permission to attend a conference since I had attended one just a few days ago. But I really wanted to attend it. I have sent two of my colleagues to seek permission instead. They got the permission. My boss called me and asked why I wasn't asking for permission while all the others who had least interest were going. I said yes its a good one to attend. Immediately he asked me to attend it.
Few years later, I had least tolerance to some people of a particular division of people. I thought see i am so helpful and friendly with people but not to this section of people. Maybe I have some lessons to learn and I may need to work with these people. Believe me within two days I got transferred to that division. It's the most horrific experience of my thinking though it was casual. I still don't understand how this happened. Can the universe hear my inner thoughts?

All is one, there is not two.
You know it already, you know it’s true.
You can look and look but there’s nothing to find
The truth’s just been hidden by the chatter of your mind.
Oneness is here, now - not somewhere above
Oneness is All, oneness is LOVE.
See it and a smile on your face will appear
Your life filled with JOY and nothing to fear.

Very interesting piece of poetry. Are you a poet? “Your life filled with JOY and nothing to fear.” - Does this line describe your own personal life? The truth’s just been hidden by the chatter of your mind. So what should one do? Do you know that there is a similar verse in the Bhaghavad Gita. It says that Knowledge is hidden by ignorance.

@@muralidharankv169 No I am not a poet - but poetry sometimes manifests. What this body/mind/conscious entity has come to see is that the universe is infinite. If it wasn’t then somewhere out there all that dark space would have to end and become something other than space. What could replace the space? Nothing could replace it so it must go on forever - hence infinity.
What’s infinite has no boundaries and cannot be measured (or it wouldn’t be infinite.) Infinity doesn’t stop where “you” start - there can’t be infinity + “me.” So all there is, is infinity expressing itself in different shapes and patterns but all of those shapes and patterns never being anything other than THE TOTALITY or THE ABSOLUTE.

@@muralidharankv169 The question you ask is posed by the mind. It seeks an answer which is nicely defined and finite so it can contain it. Truth is infinite and so cannot be defined in a way that satisfies a mind. If it could be there would be no seeking of course! It is the unbounded, infinite that contains the mind. Feel the sense of aliveness within and see the infinite nature of it. All is THAT. Put simply: All is ONE! Know this, FEEL this, BE this. The rest is just chatter for the mind (which is also the ONE appearing as the chatter of course!)
