Long-time bass player/engineer here - I disagree with the notion that bass guitar compression is optional. It takes incredible skill to play an electric bass so that every string at every fret produces the same sound amplitude. Try it yourself and watch the meter as you play. If you can keep it all within 9 dB you are doing really well. It does not take a LOT of compression to fix this. Pro live performance bass players typically have a compressor somewhere in their signal chain.
I find recording my bass direct and dry to my interface is the best option, after that I can crunch it and EQ it as needed. But yes getting the level and tone is essential at the input.
Love the new set up!! 3 cameras?? Really cool man! I like the idea of matching the “fwump” of the kick with the “fwump” of the bass. I hadn’t thought of it like that before… but when you get the bass and kick at the right level with each other it seems to hit even harder 🤘🏼 Great video Joe!
I'm recording my CD right now. I'm going to make sure I check out all of these tutorials. Plus, I really dig the sound of your band. I am going to definitely be checking it out. Thanks Joe
Hi Joe... I'd like to throw something over the wall to you. I'm a multi-instrumentalist in the process of recording a full album (in a rather decent home studio). Bass is extremely important to me (first instrument learned). I'd like to share how I approach a bass in the mix. First, my music is dense (multiple keyboards etc.). To get exactly what I'm hearing in my head, Bass is one of the last instruments I record (I know this flies in the face of convention). The reason is, as we all know, there is a lot of sonic real estate taken up by a dense mix. By recording the bass (almost last), I can fit it into the mix with perfection. I subscribe to your concept of "get it right at the source" so when recording the bass, I adjust my bass preamp to fit precisely within the mix. I generally have a concept for it and will include any effects I want in the monitoring process. Let me know what you think about my personal solution to a tailored bass sound. PS...Loooove your channel.
Another great video of yours, thank you! I make music just as a fun thing at an amateur level in different genres than yours, but the knowledge and experience you share is always applicable. I learn so much! Thank you!🙏
Thanks, Joe. Another great encouragement; the old 'kiss' approach. Off topic: Do you like peanuts? Do you like dill pickles? I recommend a peanut butter 'n pickle sandwich. Ya won't know until you try it. 🙂 Thanks again for sharing all your wisdom.
Hey Joe - Great video, solid advice! Any chance you're going to make it NAMM in January? It looks like Fender is coming back full force -- it would be awesome to see you and that Gregor guy as well.
Can you do a video on how to mix drums? As a guitarist, every time i go to mix drums i just get confused. the way that drum sets are miked baffles me, and i have no clue how to get the drum mix to best serve the song i'm working on. just some guidelines would be great.
No frequency sounds good when it’s selfish and becomes way louder than the other frequencies. Your ears like balance. Just like salt is a good thing, but too much is gross
Hey Joe...... Watching this video.......I was checking out the background view......looking at your setup. I couldnt help but notice that it appears you dont have any treatment. I could be wrong......just basing that off what I can see in background. It would be awesome if you did a small in depth video of your setup.
Joe I still hear the Bass strings hitting against the bridge or nut of the guitar (or something like a lot of pick noise). Do you usually try to remove some of that, too?
Good tips Joe but what do you do to tame that annoying clank sound that happens when the strings whack the frets? I find that too distracting in the mix. I am a bassist, by the way.
Hi Joe, just watched your guitar video, wanna do an acoustic/indierock song, kinda depressive one. So I have to record acoustic guitar but I only have 1 mic (Rode NT2-A) , should I record 2 times the guitar track to make it stereo ? My strumming is kinda complex to do it the same twice and I'm not a good guitar player. the goal is a sound like yellow from coldplay or idk somthing that touches the heart
Hello Joe, I got a one question for you Even if all the recorded tracks are muted, but still the meter in the mixer still keep on moving when we play (but without sounds) Can you please tell me what's the problem here
I'm a self-taught (I HAVE watched SEVERAL videos...a LOT of yours...Andy Johns...Joe Barressi...ANYONE who can give me tips, you know? I've been combining them all with a bit of glue, duct, tape, and prayers), do and play everything musician/band based out of Michigan. I'm actually signed (handshake agreement) with a company out of Boston (Blue FX Records), but I have a couple of my songs on here (several BEFORE signing), but...I was wondering if I could get an honest evaluation of one of my mixes? I have the UA-cam address. THANK YOU for ALL of your videos. I don't agree with ALL of them? But I LEARN something in EVERY SINGLE ONE!!! Fortunately?? I was already "GIRATS"-ing when I stumbled on your stuff...so I was like...."I don't call it that, but let's see what you got to say because..YES....that's ABSOLUTELY true...down to the bit rate you're recording at!! OR what TAPE you use!!"
I just got a Quantum 2626 last year that came with S1 Artist, but it looks like the new Quantum HD shows that it comes with S1 Pro. My understanding is version 6 with a free upgrade to version 7 that launches in October.
Im a newbie. When I'm using the Sony MDR7506 and AKG K240 listening to the same bass track, it sounds very much different, I dont know how to find out which is the best. :(
Get something like Sonarworks (just the headphones edition). All headphones have frequency bias, but SW equalises the frequency response. Know what your source actually sounds like, rather than what your headphones make it sound like... 😉 (I mix 100% of the time with K240 mkii with SW)
headphones will never be good to mix bass. You 'll miss the sub freqs. I also mixed a long time with K240. Or you cut all the freqs under 80 Hz, or you'll f**k up with the subs. Now I mix wit Genelec and a Presonus sub, it"s a totally different world.
I can't believe you're standing behind the bullshit pricing structure for Studio One. I have to say - I just lost a TON of respect for you. I guess Fender is making you guys the new Adobe. I'm sure it *totally* won't go the same as it did for Waves. Or Plugin Alliance. Terrible, terrible awful decision.
Be sure to do your research. You can still buy Studio One outright without a subscription. In fact, they just cut the price of the full version in half. All they did was add a subscription option. They didn’t remove anything. If you’re gonna be outraged, at least get your facts straight.
@@HomeStudioCorner it's once a year over twice. Time instead of version updates. Were any actual features announced??? People who just bought pro pay the same. It rewards casuals and punishes loyal users. It's a cash grab. Coincidental right after Naqvi left. He probably saw the writing on the wall and ran for the hills. Just like Dirk at PA. Good ol' Fender. Let's see how this plays out. My guess is this is their pilot for going like Avid and being basically sub only eventually. I've watched you for years. Please - don't shill this company's terrible decision. Look around. It's widely hated.
@@HomeStudioCorner don't be obtuse, Joe. You're better than that. Look around. I'm not alone in criticizing this. I'll just vote with my wallet and not upgrade. How about you tell me what I *gain* from it. It's literally twice the cost now to stay current and there's no reward for being loyal as a pro user. It's entirely to fold casual users into the higher-priced and annual tiers. But to assume I shouldn't loudly criticize a product I've used for over 10 years is crazy to me.
I’m not being obtuse. I’m trying to understand. What is different now than back in version 2 or 3? What can’t you do now that you could do then? Am I missing something. Did they take away the perpetual license?

I think he's mainly talking about ducking the bass when the kick hits
Thanks for your common sense approach. I always feel encouraged after watching. 👍

“Bass and kick can live together”. LIGHT BULB ! Thank you! That is my hot tip for the day !!! Thank you !
Thank you, Joe. Helps a lot to rethink about my singles/EP 🙏🏽❤️

Excellent job Joe! The advice on kick drum side chaining is spot on. Kudos for having the guts to say it.
Thank you so much for your time in posting and creating all these videos.
Thanks Joe for this blessing. Keep doing what you’re doing bro.
Love the video, and also love the new camera angles!

Thanks, Joe. Another great encouragement; the old 'kiss' approach.

Geeze Joe now I have your bass line stuck in my head LOL. If you didn't already have the drum track I'd have to send you one. Thanks for the tips.
Really nice 🎉❤

Literally watch the end of this video.
It’s one thing to understand what you are trying to do, it’s entirely different fighting out how to actually do it!
Since Low mids are important for bass but also heavy guitars, how would you blend them together? :-)
You make sure there isn't too much low-mid energy when you combine them
@@HomeStudioCorner Can there be too much low mids? It just sounds so good?

Wouldn't it be great to have access to the bass tracks from classic rock songs so we could match up our bass to them!
Joe I still hear the Bass strings hitting against the bridge or nut of the guitar (or something like a lot of pick noise). Do you usually try to remove some of that, too?
Hey Joe, do you take video/tutorial requests?
Sure
I can attest to the fact that when I try to add a bunch of plugins to my bass track, it usually sounds worse.
Nice
How would you alter your process for dealing with bass heavy music like neo-soul starting with a DI bass track only?
Simple Works...
That white light in the background is blinding me 😅

Ducking the bass when the kick hits can help give the mix a bit of punch and dimension - when done right.
I’m sure that’s true. I’ve just never needed to do it to give the mix punch and dimension.

Ain't NOTHIN wrong... with... peanut butter... and... bannana boy ! 😠
You just need to add some honey. 😁
I’m in.
I want some Peanut Butter and Banana now 😕
Sidechain kick/bass in EDM is certainly a style choice rather than a functional one. I've also never seen much use for sidechaining as a fix.
Your different voices are hilarious

Hmmm, are you the kind of band that goes down stairs, or stares people down? 👀
The bass track looks super compressed, or limited.? Maybe he did that..
No sidechaining kick and bass? Thats blasphemy ! Just kidding I'm gonna try that...
