One thing I do and most operators probably already know, when you come up to a hump swing your house sideways and track over the hump and that aleviates the problem of boom & stick whip when carrying something.
I like a short sling when setting sewer pipe. Using a swivel hook on the back of the bucket, when you pick up have the pipe over balanced away from you and position the pipe between your teeth. if your sling is the right length it works just as well without a thumb.
