Is the LUMIX S1H autofocus terrible? | S PRO 50mm 1.4 vs. Sigma 50mm 1.4
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- FIRMWARE INFO:
Panasonic S1H - Ver. 1.1 (There is 1.2 available, but there's no AF improvement)
Panasonic S PRO 50mm 1.4 - Ver. 1.0 (From what I can find, there's no firmware updates for this lens currently)
Sigma 50mm 1.4 - Ver. 1.0 (Also no updates or even the adapter to perform updates for L Mount Sigma Lenses)
Is the autofocus on the Panasonic S1H really as bad as they say? We're testing this out with, not only the S PRO lens, but the L Mount Sigma as well. Hopefully it helps clear the conflicting information out there regarding its autofocus capabilities.

1 thing to note that I forgot to mention, the Sigma is much louder when it's focusing than the S PRO. Definitely can hear it when you are close to the camera whereas the S PRO it's basically silent
I have the 20mm sigma Art and it is quite accurate and silent, but it's 20mm so easier I guess.
Finally I see these 50mm lens comparison video .
Yeah there seems to be a lack of videos covering these topics. This video kind of gives some insight on the image quality too compared to the S PRO and Sigma. Personally love the Sigma for the value.
man I luv the S1H but just can't pull the trigger on a $4k camera in 2020 that can't autofocus....😢
Great video! Thanks for testing the Sigma 50mm. Regards to the S1 AF. I have the S1 and one of my friends rented a S1H for testing. The first thing that I noticed, after the size and the weight was the AF. On the S1H was a lot slower and overall worse. Even in the AFS in photo mode it did worse! Maybe consider doing the same test with the S1 and put them side by side! Keep up the good work!
Thank you! That's actually a great idea. I wouldn't think the S1H would be worse since it is their video focused camera. I'll have to test it👍
THANK YOU! This was such a great comparison and breakdown of the features, capabilities, and limitations of these products. So much appreciated.
You're welcome🙏 I'm glad its been helpful. I plan on doing a comparison of the Sigma 24-70mm and the Panasonic 24-70mm very soon. Stay tuned
Damn these Panasonic people - making an overall really good camera but still sticking with their garbage contrast autofocus! It DOESN'T work, Panasonic! Ditch that trash, put Phase Detect autofocus and finally make ONE truly great mirrorless camera, without compromises. Otherwise eventually Sony or Canon will do just that.
Thank you a lot for this tests though, awesome job!
Yep. To me it would be a perfect camera if the autofocus was rock solid. No problem! Thank you for the support
Great video. We need more like this one.
Can u do one w the manual focus for beginners on the s1H and the Lumix 50mm?
A lot of us r considering this combination.
Thank u!
Thank you! I'll add it to my list of videos to do👍
Nice, mate. Loving your S1h content. This video’s a-roll does seem better with the settings turned down. What lens did you use?
It does! I was using the Sigma 35mm 1.4. Did a great job! No breathing but I didn't move much. Still nice to know it does decent for these type of scenarios
professional-level content, straight to the point, with great narrating
I was astounded to see that this channel has less than 600 subs, but that's not gonna last long I'm sure
Thank you my friend🙏I've only been making videos on this channel since 2 months ago. Even with all that, still takes time to build an audience. Hopefully will continue to deliver for you👊
Very helpful comparison! Really like the look of the S Pro, but not the price tag!
Ergonomically I think it's way better but I agree I don't like the price
Hi Dustin, just came across this great video. Thanks for doing it and sharing.
Incidently, I played around a bit with my S1H to test a combination of tripod, levelling base, and fluid head in my home office, doing a lot of wild pans and tilts across the room.
To my big surprize, the autofocus worked extremely well with the picture-profile Cine-D while it really sucked in V-Log. In cine-D it worked fine even when shooting into darker areas of the room which suprized me most. I believe that the S1H contrast autofocus would greatly benefit when shooting in V-Log from the signal for the autofocus being pulled after an internal LUT. Probably, this is exactly what Panasonic announced to be delivered with the next firmware update later this month.I am very exited for this update!
Did they add this update ?
@@creativegreats6924 Yes, AF much better now in V-Log
@@joyoffilming9500 how much better ? Of it's like this video shows I dnt want it .I rather go r5c
@@creativegreats6924 This video is from 2020! It's now much better. I use my S1H during my regular work as video-meeting camera. with face detection it works great.
Anyway if you prefer your r5c (whatever this is) - go a head.
@@joyoffilming9500 so it's alot better now so cool . Do u use native Panasonic pro s glass ?
Nice job. I want the S1H, but wonder if a GH5 and other gear might be a better first camera. It’s a badass camera though. Maybe it’s just worth every penny, being a cinema and stills tool.
You could always go with a GH5 or GH5s and it'd make a fantastic B cam to your S1H. If you're willing to dive in though and learn how the camera works and have the money, totally your decision though! Definitely is a great stills camera for the little amount of pictures I've taken
I love the Lumix S1 for photos, the image quality is amazing, but fr videos i tend to use my EOS R because of the reliability of the autofocus and tracking. Great video!!!!!!
Thank you!
Excellent channel - I'm looking forward to more. I'm also interested in the fp and other S series.
It makes sense that the ART lens would have less fine control than the S Pro lens since the gearing was developed for reflex cameras - with mechanically coupled focus etc.
Yes this is a good point
What are known reflex cameras ?
@@creativegreats6924 The older "HSM" line of ART/Sports lenses were designed for the longer flange and different focus systems of the Sigms SD1, Canon 5D, Nikon 800 etc.
The newer ART line "DN" (Digital Neo) are designed for shorter flange mnirrourless systems and their various continuous phase-video based etc focus systems.
The final HSM lenses like the 28mm, 105mm, 40mm were designed with both systems in mind to some extent.
I rented the S1H and used the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 and it made me realize how small the focus area can be when using the full-frame. I can see this being even worse when using f1.4's. I think an f4 would the lowest to go if you're handling situations that may need autofocus. Photos being a different story.
Good point
Subbed. This is a solid test. Albeit a bit frustrating. I am a S1 and G9 owner and both cameras are fab with one obvious exception: continous autofocus. You nail it when you say: > to be honest I don‘t know if I am in focus
Thank you🙏 I agree though. I use manual focus 95% of the time. The only time I use auto is for talking heads that don't move. I totally understand though super frustrating when you can't have someone do another take and your shot is out of focus. But yeah totally agree with you. Love everything about the camera besides continuous autofocus. I wish the 4k 60 wasn't cropped, but I'm still fine with it otherwise not a game breaker for me.
Dustin Armstrong I guess I just need to figure out manual focusing. Perhaps not rocket science after all with focus peaking etc? I am however very focused on audio, often recording with multiple mics, so need to have an eye on the external recorder’s meters. That‘s why reliable autofocus would be so helpful. Just one issue less to be worried about!
No I totally understand. Watch my manual focus tips and maybe that will help. Just takes practice to get more comfortable and possibly even the help of the right tools. BUT at times you will still most likely have shots that are not as in focus as you'd like.
So good! You just saved me 4k
Haha make a good b cam! But yeah harder to pull focus on a glidecam
I gave up auto-focusing with the 50mm from Lumix on the S1H. Even when you think it has done the job, you notice in post that it never stayed steady all along. I hope Lumix would work out this point on future firmware upgrades.and btw I think it would be appreciated if you take the time to edit a video on the best options for focus control tools when you're on your own filming (handheld and with a gimbal). Thanks for your work!!
Yeah the only time I use autofocus is when I'm standing still not moving. I will keep that in mind for a future video👍 no thank you!
Hold up I wanna hear more about the kneecaps and the battle royale situation from that incredible reporter at the end of the video. Fantastic easter egg.
Subscribe to his Youtu!....... oh wait
great video , very helpful thanks bro!
No problem. Glad it was👍
Thanks, Dustin.
No problem🙏
Another youtuber proved shooting 60fps improves the AF by alot. Richard Wong I think his name is. It was a eye opener vs the 24/30fps.
I think you may find that FW 1.2 will make things better. I am also interested in the Custom sensitivity settings - play around with them, you may get different outcomes.
The only thing that changed in FW 1.2 is they improved the flicker while recording in V-LOG (see Panasonic's website) no AF improvement. Turning down the settings all the way does help with focus breathing, but doesn't improve anywhere else.
I wonder what Canon R5 which has a DP-AF could do compare to S1H... I could only hope it is better than this...
The R5 will have better autofocus no doubt. The biggest thing I'm curious about with the R5 is how it handles the heat from such higher resolutions, how big it is, is it weather sealed, and the big one how much will it cost? Definitely is going to be interesting to see once it's released
Thanks Dustin, gotta get a follow focus system for this beast
Any recommendation for a decent follow focus beside the tilta nucleus nano?
@@bmkq2007 Same here! I'm honestly probably not the one to ask since I am cheap (I don't even own an external monitor yet lol) I've heard DJI's focus is good, but it's much more pricey. Are you looking for a wireless one or just one to attach to some rails?
@@DustinArmstrongPro thinking of wireless at this moment. I have saved money for the mac pro, but aborted the purchase and instead purchased the mbp 16 for my freelance work. My main job is way different than my hobby and freelance work and the company i work in provided me with data analysis high end machine to work on. So my mac pro budget is sitting on the shelf waiting for burning :)
@@bmkq2007 I can ask some of the people I know and see what they recommend. Nice! That must be quite the large budget you have for the mac pro hahaha, but I am jealous...... stoked for you to get that
@@DustinArmstrongPro will show you my setup this year, ive been wanting to start a youtube channel for awhile, never got the guts to do it. Im almost ready now
do you feel difrence in video quality ... coming from a7iii to s1h?
Absolutely 100% to the 5000th power. Extremely satisfied with the video quality. Not even just quality, but I love the natural colors it gives.
thankyou (: ...
Hi Dustin Armstrong,
Nice video! Just subbed and liked and 2nd your comment.
I also come from A73 to S1H. Do you use the Varicam lut? I use it and compared it to A73 and EOSR and S1H came on top. Always heard Canon’s color science hype (more color preference in my opinion) and it’s nice but I found with the lut, it was better.
Also, for af, I turned off tracking and eye and turn down all the settings to -5 and -3 and it doesn’t pulse.
But as you said, it takes time and depending on lens and shots, adjustments are required to get the af you need unless you use full manual (which also not reasonable if shots require focus pulling and you’re by yourself as a one man crew).
Btw, you were in focus but didn’t pay attention if there was pulsing in the background.
I would love to learn more with your af test down the road with more tests.
Keep up the good content!
@@nomad0714 Yes I use varicam luts usually (see my custom luts video).
It's color preference. Sony is actually more accurate color wise, but Canon and Panasonic I think look better to the eyes.
Yep. The settings turned down all the way it seems to not pulse. Still not fast, but helps.
Yeah pulling manually just doesn't always work for every scenario. And it's the convenience of autofocus that's nice.
Thank you though more videos to come in the future👍. Happy filming🙏
Dustin Armstrong I’ve been torn between the S1H and the a7 iii for a while. The 10 bit codec with pro video features are hard to ignore... its jut the lenses are expensive and not sure whether to go with the S1H with 24-70 2.8 for content creation and video production, or get the 24-105.... or go the a7 iii route with the 24-70 or the 35/55 combo... hmmm....
Did Panasonic ever fix these focus issues with this cam?
It's not focus issues, the technology for autofocus for video is just not very good on the camera especially when you compare it to phase detect or dual pixel autofocus. So sorry to let you know, but yeah the autofocus most likely on this camera is always going to be like this.
@@DustinArmstrongPro Thanks for the info, saved me a waste of time and money, CHEERS!!
No problem. Lots of new camera announcements so I'd definitely wait a bit and weigh all your options
I have found that speed and sensitivity both turned down to gives more reliable results. There is much less background hunting and pulsing and for interviews it's pretty smooth even at f1.4. No, it wont make quick changes but when it has focus, it holds it reasonably well. I also use a simple zone pattern with a medium zone size. (oval or diamond)
Yep that's also my conclusion. I was more surprised how comparable the Sigma is to the Panasonic
Keep going man
Happy filming🙏
I had one of my arms out during the video and almost lost it....
I hope you get a lot more subs Dustin, well deserved. Ive been following your channel. Im using the S1 and S1H to film my cooking show, great cameras.
Most people that don’t listen I don’t know it happened because they can’t type anymore to tell me ya know? I’m glad you didn’t lose it!
Hey Dustin, while in manual focus , Is it possible to half press the shutter just to grab focus?
Yes I'm pretty sure it's basically the same as what I was doing with the touch focus
Great Thanks👍🏽
If you were to shoot at 2.8 or higher you would get better results. The latest firmware has made Auto Focus night and day.
My newer video says otherwise
Hi Guys, this is 2 years on. I used the S5 with 2.0 firmware. Tweaked the focus settings to sensitive, and slow pulling, with face tracking and the 24-105. Not a shot missed all on AF. Have a look: ua-cam.com/video/QnhIbAbU1vg/v-deo.html
👍🏽
Panasonic must be holding on by a thread at this point.
Their eventual demise will be all thanks to the stubbornness to not use phase detect a/f.
I mean, maybe, but probably not
For the price, the autofocus is unacceptable
Food for thought, most cameras that are more expensive than the S1H don't have good autofocus. Still, I think they should have made the autofocus at least comparable to dual pixel or phase detect. I think it'll get better with future models though.
Lol, S1H autofocus is trash
I mean, pretty much lol. Besides that great camera
@@DustinArmstrongPro Great review btw, thanks for this
@@patlealfilm Thank you for the support🙏
Pink background is lame
That's what you got out of this video?
Pink background is doppeee
great video !
Thank you!
Really thx ! Very helpful information about the AF system of S1H!!!
No problem! Basically doesn't like too fast things.
Panasonic doesn't know that a thing called Phase detect exists. Panasonic + PDAF = perfect.
I do agree that if this camera had comparable autofocus to phase detect or even dual pixel, it'd be the perfect camera for me. But I still love the camera more than my Sony with phase detect.
Super helpful! The focus settings all the way down may actually work pretty well as we see here. What exactly did you use for this video, autofocus human and face detection mode or? Keep up the good work 🙏
It did yes. Didn't see any breathing. Yes human, face, and eye detect. Thank you! 🙏
Final Panasonic cant make normal autofocus
What's normal autofocus?
@@DustinArmstrongPro i think canon or sony! i have gh4 and every time when i work i think about new camera R5 or A7S !!! Wait for news )))
Got it! I think you mean just better autofocus. I'd say the Panasonic S1H has more "normal" autofocus from a video perspective. Most cameras these days don't have great autofocus, but within the last few years Sony with their phase detect autofocus and Canon with their dual pixel autofocus have blown people away with much better reliable autofocus for video. I am excited to see what the R5 will bring and hopefully as well the A7s III. Excited to see.
@@DustinArmstrongPro Bro on youtube have video taste S1H autofocus and this shit like GH4 or GH5, slow like old grandmother))) I pray for R5 or A7s!!!
Even if the autofocus for video is bad, the S1 and S1H are the best hybrid cameras in the market right now.
I agree with you on that👍
You may have some would say the goat, Sony a7siii. In my opinion the s1h is no slouch. It has a beautiful image.
From a technicality standpoint in the mirrorless camera market, yes most would say the A7sIII is the goat. But there's still a ton of things the S1H has the A7sIII doesn't and also agree, the image is very pleasing to look at even though the A7sIII is more "color accurate"
@@DustinArmstrongPro Love your channel. However, don't you agree that the freefly wave camera makes even the Sony a7siii seem somewhat outdated?
@@jamescook5931 I feel like it's the same with any camera. It's a tool. I didn't look a ton at the freefly wave camera, but from what I saw it looked more like a high speed camera for slow mo stuff not as much a camera you'd shoot everything with. Plus I don't think that's even released yet right?
@@DustinArmstrongPro Correct sir.
please can make configuration of lumix s1h for 4k video cinema please thanks
Maybe I'll do that next video👍
So do you think the Panasonic native lenses are better for auto focus than other non native lenses?
Maybe just slightly by like 5%. I'm going to test this again against the Sigma 24-70 and Panasonic 24-70. Video coming soon
Is the M4/3 cameras better??? GH5, G9 the ones which has better AF than the cheap cams???
In terms of autofocus for video? No. For photo I believe the G9 is the fastest autofocus around
@@DustinArmstrongPro Sorry I was not specific... of course for video. Is the G9 faster with video AF???... as far as I know it is a bit faster for photography. Not the wobbliness that is not the biggest problem it is that it just cannot follow the subject fast enough as I see it... as the phase detection systems can...
My church got one of these cameras for the film department. We ran it on a Robin S for a walk-and-talk sermon. Come from Sony, I was mind blown by how terrible this autofocus was. It just doesn’t work like it should. When it loses focus, it truly gets lost and stays lost for 5 seconds. Almost ruins the camera.
I disagree that it ruins the camera. I do agree that I'd expect better autofocus in a mirrorless camera like this, but if you've used higher end cinema cameras, you're used to using manual anyways. This camera has a lot of features you don't find in a mirrorless Sony. I also come from Sony and yes I miss the autofocus, but the quality and features for me out do having good autofocus. Just my opinion🙃
@@DustinArmstrongPro for his use case, it ruins the camera...
And people have the nerve to compare this to the R5 . This focus is crap
Dustin Armstrong r5 DPAF blows this out of the water .
There will definitely be an R5 vs S1H comparison video in the future. Well yeah pretty much most cameras will beat the S1H's autofocus for video, but this camera packs A TON that the R5 doesn't have. There's a lot more to a camera than just autofocus. This camera has also been out almost a year too. It'll be interesting to compare them in real world tests
Dustin Armstrong thanks bro !
Can you compare autofocus in Panasonic S1H with Sony iii or Canon R ?
pleas!
Yes it's actually on my list of videos to make
Great Video but it seems S Series isn't build for AF-C video. I should wait for the R5... thx a lot! 👍
If good AFC is important, yes probably better to look into other systems. No problem👍
how is this camera for weddings?
is this tough to use on gimbal like with 24mm 1.4 ....??
as AF is slow
I use it for weddings. It's definitely not as convenient as a camera with really good autofocus, but I shoot with the Ronin-s with focus motor and pull focus manually and it's not bad
@@DustinArmstrongPro okayy...
so should i buy this camera for weddings
or waiting for a7siii will b beter option?
@@aarushsharma1689 totally your decision. I was sick of waiting for Sony to do something, which is why I bought this camera. I've been extremely happy with it. But it doesn't mean you'll have the same experience as me
