    I first started, and learned everything I know with the medium lotus fans from HOP too! I've tried using smaller ring grips but I find that while doing tech moves on a flat/horizontal plane, it's so much more strain on the wrists as I have to bend my whole hand back! So I think the Russian grips are more ergonomic for anyone with carpel tunnel (like myself) also the lotus fans are about half an ounce heavier than the Russian/hybrid grips from Forged creations so the difference in weight is minute. Also Russian Grips are easier for hoopers to get into fans because the large ring allows you to mimic double hoop moves more seamlessly! I do like that the FC wicks are shorter so the flames are much less intimidating for body tracing or inner arm grips. Anyway this video was super informative and I love seeing more info on different fan styles and functions for the aspiring fan dancer! Looking forward to your channel expanding! :)

      Thanks for your comment! It's great to hear some other people's experiences. It seems like hoopers and poi spinners may take to Russian grips better, given they are the least foreign feeling grip. And you're the second person I've heard comment about smaller ring grips being harder on the wrists - a useful point to make, so thank you!! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the video :D

    2:18 .... All I needed to hear. Haha I've been contemplating playing with fans, but really having a difficult time figuring out what grip to go with.

    A friend and I are shopping for fire fans together right now. It'll be her first flow toy; I've already got poi, staff, fire eating torches and fire breathing torches. But we're both giddy, and my usual flow toy store has a crappy selection of fans.

    The fans I bought have a tiny hole to spin with and it hurts my finger and it's poorly balanced. Can't use them at all. I will look into your suggestions

    Do you know the difference between the doodle grip and a flat grip? I don't have access to try both and I'm trying to decide which to get.

  • @vivgleeson8057
    @vivgleeson8057 4 роки тому

    What do you think about the 3 wick vs 5 wick lotus fans? I’m a straight up beginner. But I’ve decided this is the fire toy for me!

    • @JessySpin
      @JessySpin  4 роки тому

      Hey! Sorry for the slow reply!! I personally prefer 5 - it would be easier to get used to the heat with 3, but i think you can create clearer shapes with the 5 wick and it's more pretty overall :)

    • @vivgleeson8057
      @vivgleeson8057 4 роки тому +1

      @@JessySpin So I totally didn't take your advice and chickened out and went for the 3 wick.... and I regret it! hah! They were fun and light to start, and less alarming than the 5 wick but you're 100% correct, you can't make nice shapes with them. I'm crossing my fingers to get a set of doodle grips once forged creations has them back in stock!!!
      I'd like a smaller pair for doing things like buzz saws, especially since my arms are somewhat short (only a 5 foot(152cm) wingspan) and forged creations seems to have the smallest ones.
      If I could do it again I still would have gone for the home of poi lotus ones for pricing reasons (my first fans) but I would have just sewn less wicks on them to start.

    I had my fire fans made. And I like how you explained everything about grip so I got that part right and it's great. But I have the problem with length. It's perfect length for spinning but if the flame's stronger it reaches my fingers. How did you decide on the length of them?

    • @JessySpin
      @JessySpin  4 роки тому

      hey sorry for the slow reply! The length varies, and i don't think there is a standard amount. best bet would be to look up other fire fans online and see what you like the look over, and note what legnth they are in the specs. for tech fans (and in my pracice fan tutorial), i find a standard chop stick length approx is good for me! Hope this helps if you haven't already got them!!

    Hi I was wondering if you regret buying the 2” doodle grip and would’ve gotten a smaller one. I’m faced w the decision to get either the 1.5” (bc you said it gives you more control) or the 2”. Having more control sounds appealing but I’m not sure how I would do using two fingers. Thank you (:

    • @JessySpin
      @JessySpin  4 роки тому +1

      Hey sorry for the slow reply! Since making this video, I actually have tried the 1.5" more and I prefer the 2" doodle grip for sure. I like to have three fingers in the ring, and find it more comfortable even though others (like Doodle, who I mention in this video) prefer the 1.5 :)

    Hi Jessy!

    • @JessySpin
      @JessySpin  7 років тому

      Omg I am sorry for the suuuuper delayed response - only just saw this comment!! I have 2" doodle grip fans by Forged Creations and they are quite light - I just looked it up and each fan weighs 12.3 oz. You can still do tech with larger fans (e.g. russian style fans are generally quite big!), but for the American Tech style (with lots of folds and negative space stuff) smaller is better. Hope that helps! Again, sorry for the slow response! *face palm* Xxxxxxx Jessy

    Hey! Question for you about the development of your style with your initial fan choice. I got the same set from home of poi, did it inhibit some moves you show in your tutorials?
    Typically I spin poi and have been wanting to learn more about fans for a while, it is a bit of a technique difference.

    • @JessySpin
      @JessySpin  4 роки тому +1

      I definitely found the bar across the handle to be limiting, and while I started with those fans and learnt many movements on them, I really found my tech and skill opened up when I upgrading to a higher quality fan. You can sitll learn things, but more static movements - spinning as you may have discovered is quite dificult!

    I have the one with the bar across from home of Poi, I got them as a gift.
    Should I get the bar and ring cut off? Or just work with it?

    • @JessySpin
      @JessySpin  4 роки тому

      Sorry for the slow reply!!! I would just work with it (maybe doing more static grip patterns) and if you decide you're committed to fire fans, invest in a higher quality pair! Unless it's easy for you to cut the ring, but I think it would be more trouble than it's worth cos eventually you might want to upgrade anyway :)

    What exactly is the difference between tech and dance fans?

    • @JessySpin
      @JessySpin  4 роки тому +1

      hey! sorry for the suuuuuper slow reply! I would think of 'dance' fans as designs where you can't really spin them easily (e.g. because there is a bar across the middle), and tech are the large or small ring style. :)
