PDL is definitely my favorite PTA film, it feels like a lot of his work is a bit cynical and yet this incredibly dark movie just feels so ready to get swept up into that feeling of love.

I’m autistic and ADHD and I tell everyone that this is the only neurodivergent romantic comedy.
Barry’s meltdowns are an incredible portrayal of how that can feel, and his reaction to Clair is very relatable.
Just adding a perspective to this movie that most people would miss.

Not as much a "comedy" but I highly suggest the BBC Pride & Prejudice with Colin Firth as Mr Darcy. If you go in with the reading that Mr Darcy is on the spectrum and suffers anxiety a LOT of his action make too much sense -especially how Firth portrays him. As someone with anxiety issues, I tend to retreat into "the rules" of any given situation, be they social or otherwise, as it sort of gives me the confidence to keep going -surely as long as I'm doing what I'm "supposed to" then I can't be wrong and can ignore this feeling twisting my chest.
With this as a reading, our Mr Darcy's actions come across as he's doing what he's supposed to as a member of higher society and not picking up on the very clear signals that Elizabeth is not playing that game.

@@TwoLeftThumbs I've never been much into the Austen and period drama type either. My wife is a big fan of that sort and another youtuber had recommended that specific series and I thought, why not to try bridge my wife's and my interests (I just love film and shows) and it was an amazing experience. I feel like I picked up on with Firth was doing right away because that's how I react to things. I've no interest in exploring more of the same content (British period drama/romances) however because I feel like this nailed it so hard every other attempt will be tedious. Good luck out there.

@@thelastdictator482 I am very fond of Jane Austen-based movies. I always said that they I like them mostly because of all the things that are unsaid because of having to perform socially, but I never really considered how that might be more relatable for me specifically as I have ADHD.

I saw this in the theater and **minor spoiler** near the beginning I remember the crash was so loud and unexpected that it jolted me so much that I was on edge throughout the rest of the movie. I've always wondered if the purpose of that crash was to put the viewer into a state of distress, similar to how the main character might constantly feel. Also, I couldn't stop laughing at the line, "It really looks like Hawaii here".

It really is crazy how movíes can be uncanny. In we have to leave here together, some of the conversations you created were so incredibly realistic they felt like a memory. You're able to convey a realism in you work that is deeply personal, to the point that it feels like deja vu. Very happy that you have the massive recognition you deserve Joel.

Hell yeah man, Punch Drunk Love is very dear to me. I revisited a lot of PTA movies earlier this year cause they were some of my favourites growing up. I feel like this one gets better and better as I mature. It's such an endearing story and I liked hearing your takeaway about the power of love in our lives. I agree that movies like this one that can speak to your soul are also going to be the ones that make a lasting impression on you. But I also love some escapism too - I also just revisited The Wedding Singer and I feel like that's a funny comparison to Punch Drunk Love. It's more like comfort food. Take some time to watch more movies Joel!

Also joel if you see this watch a video on youtube called Bo Burnham V.S. Joel Haver | The "Me Generations" i found it interesting

Great pick. Punch-Drunk Love is my favorite movie with Adam Sandler and one of my favorite love stories. Another thing to think about, when this came out Adam hadn't really done anything that wasn't his silly, crass comedies. He was known for SNL, Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, Waterboy, etc (movies which I adored at the time, and still have a soft spot for) so this movie came out of nowhere. Yes it's weird and idiosyncratic and something of a darker comedic take of the previous goofballs he had portrayed, but it also had a level of seriousness and realism we never knew Sandler was capable of. I think this movie also relates to how much I am not a fan of Adam these days because he's capable of such great roles with proper direction and a good script, but he rides the lowest common denominator bus to the bank instead of looking for any artistry -yeah, my personal hangup, I know.
Anyway, keep up the great videos on this and other channels. You bring art and joy into the world. Thank you.

fun fact i learned about in my psychology class: we don’t really know why we love. like evolutionarily, there is no benefit to the feeling of love. there are many theories on like different types of love, but psychologists and sociologists don’t actually know why. and i think it’s a beautiful, very human thing to make cinematic masterpieces trying to explore different aspects of love because i think subconsciously, the feeling of love is like an enigma whether you’ve experienced it or not

My wife and I watched this a couple of months ago for the first time. I wasn't expecting much but quite liked it. After watching your video I'm now reminded just how funny Adam Sandler is, and how important it is that I show my young son Happy Gilmore asap. Side note: tried to reply to your DM in UA-cam comments, but UA-cam kept rejecting my reply. No need for a prize. It's prize enough that I get to view your genius online. Keep on doing you, my friend!

I feel like this movie has the same basic premise that Uncut Gems had of taking Sandler’s comedy character and dramatizing it. It felt weird to me when the UG writers described it that way but didn’t mention that this movie also did that.

I remember watching Punch-Drunk Love as a teenager, being surprised it wasn't a comedy, not understanding the film at all and all I remember from the film itself is it being a nightmarish film where Adam Sandler gets kidnapped by gangsters, or something. Everyone online nowadays has high praise for it but I remember it being a very depressing movie that I didn't like at all, lol.

Was wondering if you're aware that in one of the earlier scenes in the movie, while Adam Sandler is strolling through the grocery store, Emily Watson can be seen in the background stalking his every movement. Brings some interesting context to her character and adds a somewhat twisted aspect to the film imo

And that's fine but just want you to know that I and probably others can make it out.
Movies are the best shared, and it's a while it's a mighty shame we can't choose who we watch with much of the time, it's worth it for the surprises of who we spend the time with in the future and their memories: in front of a screen or not.
