Exactly... It's the sheep and meme mentality these days that causes this behaviour. Uncool kids desperately trying to fit in. Some may genuinely not like this bad that's given but most of the hate they get is mainly from bandwagoners

Because they're Canadian is what I hear a lot. But many, many great bands hail from our northern neighbors, so that doesn't fly. I think it's just a "thing".....like a guilty pleasure nobody wants to admit to for some reason. The "commercial" aspect could be more to the point.
I'm not so much into them now but personally I think their first two albums were the best Curb & The State. With The State being the better of the 2. Once their third album Silverside Side Up came out it and everything that followed just sounded the same even the lyrics.
And really the majority of their fan base hadn't even heard of them until their third album came out and started getting radio play then they blew up.
Ryan and George, singlehandedly, will bring back nickelback, but not right now.

The reason people hate on them is because back in the day, I forget who it was, but another band said they suck and Chad Kroeger came out swinging defending his band. Ever since then it's been the "cool" thing to say, that they suck. The fact is, they absolutely sell out every single arena they play in and their albums all go platinum. People are closet Nickelback fans. I've seen them 4 times and they are really awesome live, it's hit after hit after hit.

Chad went after slipknot saying they sucked because they had 9 people in the band to make them sound good(something along those lines). Corey then came out swinging on chad and not the band as a whole.
Jonathan Walkoviak Yeah I said Corey. They were signed for the same label and they got beef with each other. Not the bands as a whole. But imo your band would still back you up if things got pretty serious. Two different personalities so I dunno why one would criticize the other.
Music snobs and cool kids hated Journey, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and the Eagles back then, but all those bands are beloved now, with plenty of classic songs. Nickelback could be on their way to that status. Truth be told, rock needs bands like them to give the genre relevance.
Hating the Eagles is not even an opinion. It’s just incorrect. It is FACT that the Eagles are great. Like the sun is in outer space.
@dawsondudark Idk, man. I can't stand The Eagles. Hotel California rules, and Take it Easy is good, but they've both run out of replay value for me. Every other song I've heard from them does absolutely nothing for me. I don't understand the hype at all.
I'm a metalhead, and I actually like Nickelback. Yes, I catch hell for it, but I'm also a drummer who loves Karen Carpenters playing. Great groove and feel, and she could swing! Mr. Buddy Rich once said that Karen was his favorite drummer! That's good enough for me...

Also, they weren't created by a label. Other than the drummer, the band has been together since the early 90s. Chad borrowed money from his stepfather to make their first demo. In other words these guys worked their way to success and made it the same way as any other band.

You guys are exactly right, his voice sounds good and the instrumentals, but each nickelback song sounds good in the exact same way. If you listen to a whole album it's almost like throwing a song on loop for 30 minutes. This is also coming from a nickelback fan, I listened to these guys all the time.

I agree, I like Nickelback music. His voice is great and the songs are good. I think most of the hate comes from, like you say, many of their songs sound identical. Their formula works.
Yeah but there are A LOT of bands that does the same thing and Nickleback isnt the first one. My dad is a huge AC/DC fan and we where talking about how basically every track from them is the same. But he thinks its SO GOOD it doesn't matter.
Some people want variation in music but some people are out there searching for a peculiar sound that they just wanna click with.
and that's exactly it.....I used to love listening to Nickelback and sing along to the lyrics....but yes....at some time..I realized..."wait a moment...which song we are now listening to...?" can't diffentiate....It s not about his voice, the lyrics, even the style of the pop rock music ( I also listen to Suicidal Tend/Slayer/Machne Head and Bruce Springsteen...etc) it's not about if you like or dislike his look of he married Avril ;-)....It's about listening to same stuff all the time..and each of them turns platin....
I'd also add that it sounded extremely similar to everything else out at the time. They are extremely talented, well produced, and well put together, but their music loses it's soul in the packaging.

I grew up in a country music household. When my dad married his second wife when I was nine, Nickleback was on of the things she brought into my life. I've loved them for years.

JUST responded to a comment below with a similar response. I see a lot of slick dissing but no REAL explanations. Also, the well thought out explanations STILL come off as hating. ''Oh well they are pop'' ''Oh well their sound is the same as every other band at the time'' etc. Keep in mind, that THROUGHOUT THE HISTORY OF MUSIC, there has always been a 'popular' sound that influenced a generation of musicians (this goes for every genre). Them following a 'formula' doesn't take away from the skill and talent it takes for them to make great music. They may not be ''innovators'' or ''visionaries'' but they make good music. PERIOD.

I like their older music but their newer stuff is trash, it's like they forgot who they were. Then Chad goes out and bashes a rock/metal legend in Corey Taylor from Slipknot, and Stone Sour saying that the only reason Slipknot is popular is a gimmick and that Nickelback is one of the most diverse bands in history is just ridiculous. Nickelback's new music seems like it was made in a studio that has a "Blueprint" to a hit when in reality it's just the same thing every other artist is doing better than they can. But their old shit is great.
Nothing against their music. I just could never stand the guy's voice, and that's a dealbreaker for me.

This is hands down, one of the BEST albums from Nickelback! The Long Road is a great album and the lyrics to their songs are meaningful and tell a story. Love Nickelback!

stephanie reeves I agree, avatar is amazing. But I was trying to keep the music a little lighter I didn't think they would like them. I personally do like avatar though. My favorites are smells like a freak show, hail the apocalypse (this is the first song I've heard by them), and bloody angel.

Coming from a guy who had their album. Their hits were good in my opinion. Where Nickleback gets legitimate hate, is that too many of their songs end up sounding the same and the instrumentals tended to be rudimentary compared to what some other musicians can do. That is the criticism. But! I liked this one and I rocked the album once and a while. Now that I'm older, I'd like to go back and listen to their album again to see what I think now, but back then I thought it was a good cruising album. They are good at making radio songs.
I think you really nailed it when you said, they were too popular. The casual fans vs hardcore rock fans thing is super super accurate, though.

Lost In Vegas they are very talented and even better in concert. The hate comes from being over played on the radio and the bandwagon fans they brought in. Some people say all their songs sound the same and very generic. Those same people love ac/dc yet all their songs sound the same and basic 3 chord riffs. Both excellent bands.

Lost in Vegas I actually went to a Nickelback concert, it was great, they even played Metallica's Sad But True and the women to men ratio was insane so yeah lot's of hate from people that are trying to hate trendy bands, it's a joke.
I went to a Nickelback concert in probably 2004 or 2005. Clutch opened for them and the whole show was incredible!

The lead singer, Chad Kroeger, does a song with Carlos Santana which is pretty good. It's titled "Into The Night." Carlos is the man, though. He makes his guitar sing.
He also did "Why don't you and I" With Santana, and it was damn good as well.
Chad co-wrote the song but someone else sang it on the Santana album, good song though.
I just found you guys and am absolutely obsessed with this channel! It felt so good to hear someone talk about Nickelback in a positive way, as someone who grew up adoring them. I know you guys get infinite requests, but I highly recommend reacting to the band TesseracT (very melodic/groovy prog metal), if I had to pick a song: Hexes. The whole nickelback sucks meme/joke comes from the fact the epitomize the "generic industry rock" that dominated rock radio play from the late 90s into the mid 00s. The hate isnt exactly a critique on nickleback, but more of a meta commentary and backlash to the overproduced "industry rock" genre as a whole. Tbh its kind of unfair to nickleback that they are the scapegoat to all the backlash, but so is life hope this helps.. Anyway Love your channel guys keep it up! Would love to see yall maybe check out some led zeppelin like stairway to heaven or dazed and confused or some brand new like guernica or jesus christ. Peace love and success!
The hate is just ridiculous. Music has ALWAYS had trending sounds. Which is why you can listen to a song from the 80's without knowing the band and pinpoint that it was made in the 80's. The same thing applies to every decade. Nickelback is not an ''innovative'' group and they were not ''visionaries'' as it relates to Rock. HOWEVER, they make good music as 'formulaic' as it sounds. This is a really true and well written answer.
Nickleback's music is almost too formulaic. From the big choruses and to the sing song "yeah yeahs". Especially since this came out after the grunge era which was against formulas and against the system. Grunge became so popular not by being formulaic but by being something different and exciting. Nickleback became the poster boy of the new alternative scene that wanted to be grunge bands but didn't have the heart behind it. They weren't heavy enough to be nu metal but not sincere and their own thing like grunge. You can listen to a nirvana song and write down little tips on how they made their songs, puddle of mudd, staind, and nickleback used these tips to basically create their whole sound. Kurt Cobain always said "Nirvana is a mix between The Beatles and Black Sabbath." Could Nickleback even think of something like that? Nu metal was big in a different way but nickleback got on commercials and heavy rotation on radio, so the fact that they were heavily exposed to everyone didn't help their street cred either. I'm sure every influence Nickleback has, writes better songs and is more believable. "we need a pre-chorus here and yeah yeahs here and oh let's write a song about this and this" doesn't belong in rock. Rock is against the system just like hip hop is. It isn't meant to be safe and formulaic. it's meant to push boundaries and say fuck you to the man. Rock and Hip Hop in particular were made for the outcasts, for the pissed off people in this world. When that heart and energy is stripped away it feels fake and forced and formulaic. THAT is my problem with Nickleback and the bands like them.

I have always loved Nickelback so my husband surprised me with tickets to see them and HOLY SHIT I could not fault them live, they sounded perfect and they were the most amazing crowdsmen! It was so good! I don't get why people don't like 'em, but they're entitled to their wrong opinions!

Can't speak for Americans but in Canada a lot of people can't stand Nickelback because radio stations (who are required by law to play a specific percentage of Canadian music) jammed them down our throats for years.
Canadian too, I think they're seen as the de facto band of Canada, while our other bands like Finger Eleven got pushed aside. I like NBs older stuff like Leader of Men

First, I am a metal/rock head, but love all music thanks to parents who listened to everything as well. Even in my group of friends who are all metal heads hate on Nickelback so much and I do not get it! Been watching the videos just haven't been commenting. Great video guys. For me Nickle back wasn't bad. It was a great band and people just don't like when something is overly popular. They had amazing songs and great albums. To me I still like Nickle back they are still good. It's like Creed with people. They just don't like the band because of their own logic. A lot of hate has to come with what has happened at their concerts as well. When people throw stuff on stage and all that junk, they don't tolerate it and leave without finishing like they should. So I think that's where some of their hate comes from, but when a famous rapper does it like Wayne when he was hit by a water bottle it was like they approve more of that than when Nickle Back does it. Someday was the first song that I was introduced into them and it was amazing. I'll post my list again just on a later video. Keep it going guys you are amazing.

Hey you guys may not see this but I just wanted to say after watching dozens of y'alls videos that y'all are doing a wonderful job of reminding America of its musical culture all the way back to the 70s (Black Sabbath among others). Putting the thought into someones mind that another person of a different background and cultural can still enjoy the same music together even if for different reasons. The problem with humanity is lack of communication and you guys are communicating that music transcends todays political trends and view points in our world. You guys helped change my world that's for sure. God bless!

The early stuff from Nickelback was great.
Nickelback was the first concert I ever went to and they’re activity on stage and vibes they put out are insane. When they sang they’re song “animal” they flew around the stadium on a tiny lil stage thing and it was the coolest thing I ever seen at a concert by far to this day. You can pry find it on UA-cam somewhere!
Nickelback is my all time favorite band!!! And my favorite Song by them is Next Contestant
I honestly have no idea why Nickleback is so hated.
They are incredibly talented, period.

I remember this group. I remember this voice triggered a new emotion amongst us that many bands couldn't get to... The passion was one of a "metal & sorrow & apologetic sound". Very new at the time. So I applaud Nickelback for finding this specific sound.
Also one of the best band I have ever seen live. Great sound, stage and showmanship!

I have a VERY VERY good ear for music and I always know when I hear a song from a band for the first time if a band will become very big or not. The first time I heard Nickelback I was amazed and I absolutely knew they would be big. They sounded so good and they just have all the attributes needed to have that big sound and I'm a heavy metal/thrash music lover since the 80's. The 90's were a miserable time with regard to rock/heavy metal/thrash music and for nearly 10 years, all we had was alternative(mostly crappy) music. Thank God for Nickleback! They were one of the first bands that helped get the world out of the alternative mudslide the 90's had put us on. If a band sounds good it sounds good and I think Nickelbacks huge success proves that.
All these people that hate on nickleback, were probably fans of them back when they were GOOD and once they got into the pop side, is when they stopped listening to them and "hate" them. If you don't like their newer stuff, don't just stop listening to them. Listen to the stuff you still like by them. Yes their music is the same. But that's what they are known for. For example. The hardcore metal band HATEBREED. Their music has been the same Damn style since their first album in the 90s. It's 2017 and they are still the same way on their newer album. I like nickleback. I love their older stuff. I don't like their newer stuff. But i still continue to listen to their older stuff because that's what I like from them.

A counter example: considering the gushing love and admiration for Metallica these days, it's easy to forget (or maybe hard to believe if you weren't there) that there were significant parts of their fan base that, with every new album release, lamented how they were selling out. Similar stories for all sorts of great bands and I think rock and heavy metal fans are some of the worst for it.
I think it's a natural narcissistic tendency to think of artists as ours, as speaking to us, and then feel betrayed if they stop; Show indifference to us and speak to other people instead. The better the band the more they speak to us and the deeper the feeling of betrayal. But it's so unfair and very sad. It becomes impossible to really experience the joy, edification and inspiration that music can bring with that monkey on your back.

Thank you guys ! I never got the hater thing, either. Two Nickelback songs that I really love both start with the same word ... IF. If Today Was Your Last Day and If Everyone Cared. I love to watch you two and listen to your take on music and lyrics. Great channel that has fast become one of my very favorites. I could spend all day (literally !) listening to music and giving my opinion like you two are doing ! Awesome job. Pure joy watching and listening to you.
