I was really surprised by just how well-crafted this game is. Genuinely rock solid design. I also like the Ys-style presentational touch of this story being part 2 of a grander whole. (though I might just be out of the loop here - this might simply be a sequel to a game I'm not familiar with ^^)
Very nice review, This is hitting limited run in a few days and this review has been enough to make me take the plunge. Love me some physical copies and this looks like my kind of game. Thanks buddy
Overall I think the game is really cool and I'm into it for the most part, but the one thing that drags it down is all the backtracking that you need to do in order to go to a campfire to switch your character out because one ability is needed. I really wish they would have implemented a button that would just switch your character on the fly. I mean the game is challenging, they didn't need to artificially raise the difficulty by making you have to Trek to find the campfire in order to switch your character out to progress. That's just tedious
was browsing the Playstation Indie sale and for some reason this caught my attention. Game looks great and this review solidifies my thoughts, I'll be picking it up. If I like it I just hope it gets a physical release too. What can I say, I love my physical copies and having a collection I can look at. Just hope I can get into it. Don't mind death but sometimes I'm a little impatient & that can lead to problems in the rare event I play these games lol. But I've been trying to expand my horizons more and I was a kid at the tail end of the Atari 2600 so NES was my first full console generation.
It’s forgiving in that you don’t really lose anything when you die. Plus the game isn’t that long so without it you could probably beat it in a couple hours
Eh, I feel like the checkpoints are spaced just far enough that you can make progress. Do a bit of orb farming to upgrade if you're having trouble, it's quite easy when you break the masks.
I played the demo, nice game but respowning at the begining of the fortress, instead the last fire, is realy stupid and tedious. This aimes at elongation of the game but it's unnecesery since the streamlined gampley is an advantage.
There's plenty of elevators and portals. And like any other metroidvania, you'll need to backtrack frequently anyway. I just don't agree with this complaint. In Hollow Knight, your respawn may be far from where you need to be and just as far from a fast travel point, and no one complains about it at all, simply because you don't start at the beginning? There's an elevator...RIGHT THERE.
Wait ! It's not actually a roguelike, the roguelike element is apparent to the upgrade system available when the character dies, the same way you spend your experience acquired during your play once dead in Hades or Curse of the Dead Gods. There are other ways to level-up though (pick-ups or statues after getting a specific relic). Other than that detail, it's 100% a metroidvania !
If you dont like roguelikes, dont bother. This game will piss you off, while it did to me. Redoing the same areas over and over. Whats the point of even having save function in bonfires? If you dont start there after death, but at beginning of dungeon?
I despise roguelikes but I think this is easily one of the greatest Metroidvania style games I've ever played. It really isn't a rogue like but certain elements are simply reminiscent of that genre.
I really feel like this game doesn't respect my time. Why do I have to walk all the way back to a campsite to switch characters? Several times I have to walk through the same corridor 2-3 extra times just because of a character-specific lock. That's not exciting and doesn't make me feel smart, it just bores me. Why do I have to die to buy upgrades? Why are all the upgrades super lame? There are so many number increases and barely any movement abilities. Why are upgrades split across 3 characters? Why is there so much grinding? Why do I have to run back so far every time I die? What's even the point of save points if I don't get to start there? On a side note, the controls in this game are really janky. You have a jump buffer that is like a full second in length, which can make your character jump a lot more often than you want to. You also hold attack to keep swinging. Like, come on man I wanna mash! There's no attack buffering outside of holding, so mashing isn't viable either, which feels bad man. Finally you can store an attack while climbing, which looks really buggy when you release it (and yes, you can buffer a second stored attack by holding the button). This game is ok, but not much more than that.
I totally agree with the 9, the game is really well thought with a lot of content and secrets, I had a blast and let RE8 on the side. The only thing lacking is the bosses which are way too easy and need more attack patterns and / or phases.
Another annoying game that wastes your time with redoing the same areas over and over like all these cheap roguelites. No thanks. I played for an hour or so and had to redo first area 3 times cos enemy respawn of course and they dont care for physics (can fly through walls while you cant hit them that way), and every hit you get counts. You die? Back from square 1, the same areas, the same boring enemies, and you have to traverse this to get to place where you died. Fuck that.
I don't know what the word "rogue-like" even means for some people. Rogue-likes are games like the Mystery Dungeon series, and this game isn't even a little bit like that.

I don’t think it is haha but if it is I wanna play the first entry!
@@NoisyPixelNews Castle in the Darkness is very similar from the same developer. Very nice little hidden gem!
I played through the demo last night on Switch. What a terrific game. I'll be picking this up on pay day for sure.

I see this in the next AGDQ being done in one runthrough.
That would be rad
Loved the few hours I’ve played. Don’t like the roguelight system though at all. Feels like I can’t make any progression.

Physical release incoming from Limited Run Games.

Actually, respawning at the beginning allows to access the elevator which is useful. It would be less tedious if there were more elevator stops.
@@GUIHome09 Thanks for information, I may give it a chance.

Hey. How difficult is the game?
It’s difficult, but there are ways to make it easier

I love it!
