I have the Vermeer 822 rake with the center wheels and it is awesome. I would buy one instead of modifying. The new Vermeer rakes have several easy adjustments and are lightyears better rakes than the one you have.
I should have added to my comment on the last video another reason we didn’t ted much was because we have such a longer growing season in south Georgia and we can afford natural drying by waiting another day or two in needed. Less abuse to the hay and less trips across the field.

This late in the year, really hard to dry hay here. Heavy dew that doesn't dry off until late morning.. even with the drought...
