Maybe if more people had pride and stood up to the dog whistling screaming mob. Our culture on all fronts wouldn't be breaking down and disappearing.
Being British is something special that brings all the nations of the British Isles together, so for them to say no just shows how supportive they are of the U.K. as a whole but if you asked this question 100 years ago in that same square they would all 100% say yes and would die for that country so for these gentleman to say no is a disgrace to those men who fought for their freedoms and the others in the U.K. who also did so.
Which wars are we talking about? Boer War? Was that about our freedoms? WW1? A squabble over corpse of Austria-Hungarian Empire and nothing to do with the poor sods who died. Falklands War? How does defending a colony 8000 miles away help the average person? So, WW2 - where men were conscripted to fight and die, conscripted in the name of freedom.

What does pride in being British entail? I don't think there's any sense for e.g. for a Scotsman to be proud of the history and culture of Wales. I don't thimk there's such a thing as "British" in terms of culture, because every country has its own culture and history. Great Britain is simply a term to refer to the union of 4 countries, but not an ethnicity. Personally, even saying I'm British makes no sense. The English guy asks him “aren’t you British?” Scottish guy says “In Scotland the term British is synonymous with English.” The English guy responds and says “But we all live on the island of Britain, so we’re all British.” I start laughing, so they look at me. “In wales we say we are the ONLY British people with Scot’s and English as later settlers.” I’m afraid these men don’t know their history, all signs indicate that the Cambrii were the earliest remaining people group living on the island, as the Welsh language evolved the name for the island “Prydain” was used to describe the island. During the English settlement those who fled the island fled to Armorica in France which became known as Brittany after all of the Britons who settled there. Famous Welsh folk hero Brenin Arthur Pendraig was Brenin of what? Oh yeah the Britons. Who did he fight? The English that’s right. If they were truly proud welshmen they would not cede the heritage of the island to the late comers.

I think the Welsh would maybe feel more British if they got a bit more recognition. I found out an incredible thing which i think needs more light shone on it, is that for all we learn about the Norman conquest of Britain and how much it changed everything, one thing we seldom learn about is how they never conquered Wales and by the time they did they were known as the English. I think that is not only something that should be taught more widely, but is a story of pride and resistance that we should all be proud of
It does make my blood boil that we learned more about black history than our Welsh history in school. We are also useless at selling ourselves. Just look at Ireland. A lovely country but in my view it does not have as mushroom to see as Wales does but they do a brilliant job of advertising their country via the Guinness brand. I was in Sydney, Australia 5 years ago and was shocked to see a 7m x 4m advertising board at Circle Key which had literally a small pile of stones in a field. Not a photo of our magnificent castles, mountains or beaches. Just another example of how useless our Assembly is.

I suppose to be fair, Ireland has had a massive influence on American culture too, what with the police force, Kennedys, St Patrick's day in Boston and such. And when you have that direct influence on the world's biggest superpower, it will be massively amplified. The Americans often seem to have a habit of thinking Britain and England are one and the same too which is frustrating at times

@@DOG-MEAT there's nothing untrue in what you said, however, the discussion we are having is not a geographical one but more one concerning national and cultural identity. A sad state of affairs I'm sure you'll agree. The UK is a lot stronger if we all work together, but if we are to do so, we need to acknowledge one another and give credit where credit is due, because if we don't, it will simply sow the seeds of division even further, and i think we can all agree that more division and fragmentation of our society is the last thing we need right now

@@jasonirwin2947 You wouldn’t last a month without English taxpayer subsidy……just like your Celtic cousins north of the border…..England is the economic powerhouse on this island……you know it…..I know it…….everyone else knows it……just be grateful for Tom jones and Shirley bassey…….oh …..and all those magnificent castles we gave you….just to remember who your boss is 😂😂😂😂😂😂
For what?
Would you build a wall along the border? 😂
Doubt that, wales has no natural resource, low gdp, infrastructure sucks. Independence would sink wales into poverty.
I find this so sad! The Welsh are the last remnants of the ancient British. Not one said Yes, I’m proud to be the only real British!!
The British union has worked wonders for the devolved nations, particularly Scotland. Before the union, Scotland was a near-failed state of inter-warring clans and religious sects. Volunteering to join the union fast propelled it to becoming one of the most successful nations on earth.
Wales is a fantastic nation. I’m proud to call it part of Britain.
I'm English, I have pretty much no connection to being British. Perfectly happy with my English heritage, don't have oppressive ancestors! I think that this is pretty common.
@@sparagmos4748 you're actually German
@@Mattlawton-ft6ew Well not quite 🤔

Im English and proud of all brothers and sisters of these isles 🇮🇪 🏴 🏴 🏴 🇬🇧
People are aloud there option, I do agree , I’m welsh not British , as for some of the other comments “don’t expect English money “ give us back everything you’ve taken from us in compensation, all the money for coal , flooded villages for English cities , trying to kill our language and rob us of our identity as a nation … Not really a bad payment scheme for the English people is it .. same the crown has done all over the world , India , Pakistan,Ireland , Scotland, etc etc .Then moan about people being proud of their nationality.
😂
So you are a foreigner in your own land. Well I'm not foreign to these lands and refuse to call myself such. Im a Cymro-Briton (British). The sad irony is the term Brit was first coined for the Welsh, as English speakers call them.
you are british, british = welsh, scottish, english, northern ireland like it or not its true. Also you clearly hate the english like were responsible for the past hundreds of years ago, thats like hating germany for WW2. You seem angry and sad.
It's spelled "allowed". Aloud is a contraction of "out loud".
Absolutely its good to be different why do we all have to be the same
My Welsh friend put his tongue firmly in his cheek when he said he was " a citizen of the realm"😅😅
I'm proud to be both. I, and others like me, are the original Brits. We were here long before the Romans, Angles, Saxons, Vikings or Normans.
IAM Welsh 🏴👍💯
And British. I'll explain it for you. The UK is made up of wales Scotland England and northern Ireland and is situated on the island of Britain. The British isles has three countries on it which are Scotland Wales and England. Like it or not that's just basic geography.
@@DOG-MEATAnd so what? I’d rather be called a Welsh person than an English person. CUZ I AM
WELSH
@@000WZ are you dim because you just ignored the whole comment 🤦. I'll simplify it for you. British does not = English. British just means anyone from any of the three countries on the island of Britain which like it or not Wales is on.
@ Yeah Ik that. But I’m just saying I’d rather call myself Welsh…I was born here..nowhere else. I’d never want to be called an English person at all. Nobody does 😂
@@000WZ ok then so why did you reply to my original comment that has nothing to do with calling Welsh people English 🤦. You're really just digging a hole for yourself at this point.
The guy that said they were oppressed by English people. Like some of my fellow Scot’s seem to forget the Welsh and Scot’s helped oppress people all over the world just ask the Irish. Proud to be a Scottish Brit. Up the Union.
Did you go on a match day or something? Half the people interviewed are wearing red. It's not exactly a fair representation if you're interviewing match going fans.
@chrisbduck1938
Rugby.
I’m proud to be English just as much as they are proud to be Welsh .
Come on lads our nation going through enough without the divide of its people….let me start I’m English,British and I love you and proud I share these lands with you my brothers and sisters 🇬🇧 🏴 🏴 🏴 🇮🇪
Its not English oppressing Welsh, its upper classes oppressing working-classes.
I've had that conversation with Irish friends...
"Yeah mate it wasn't my broke ass serf ancestors who oppressed you! They were too busy working a field and dropping dead at age 40!
The British flag should have a dragon on it
I’m English and have absolutely no problem with this.
The Welsh dragon is a symbol of resistance against the English hence why it will never be on the Union Jack.
I’d rather incorporate some of the green instead, the dragon is cool but would overcomplicate the flag
The welsh were side by side with the english and the scots. Fighting and colonising together. They like to forget they were the British empire
It's not like we dont like English people. It's the government we dont like
Were they? Wales was conquered and annexed by England so wasn’t apart of the union.
@alynwillams4297 Look up how many Scottish and welsh plantations there were in the carribien.
@@T1CHE14 Wales, unlike England and Scotland, did not formally establish or control specific plantations in the Caribbean.
@alynwillams4297 Well henry morgan is the most known one, and he definitely owned much more than one large plantations in jamacia. Bangor rige, Chepstow, Newport, Cardiff, Llandovery, and many more are all places in jamacia. Named by welsh men who moved settled and ran plantations.
It never ceases to amaze me how ignorant some people are. Regardless of whether you're English, Scotish, or Welsh; we all live on the land mass called Britain. Hence, we are all British.
Cheer~~~the Celtic language of Wales, spoken by about 500,000 people (mainly bilingual in English). Descended from the Brythonic language spoken in most of Roman Britain, it has been strongly revived after a long decline.😊
I'm a proud scot !
Ok
Good
I dont think English people are particularly "proud" to be british
Nope you are correct
@ninaturner1546 but I also aren't going to walk around feeling ashamed of myself because of where I was born like a sad twat...get a grip

How.?
You can call yourself a country, but you're in noway an independent nation. Scotland just proved this. Vote for independence if you want to preserve your legacy and culture.
Ive paid 2 grand after 7 years to get my british citizenship and now I see everyone is saying they don't want to be british😂 love UK😄❤️
"Opressed by the British" but ok to take the £16 billion grant per year.
Is that 16billion some of the money you guys got back for brexit 😂
@amandadublin3129 Does it matter where it has come from?
The crazy thing is they think British people oppressed them. 99% of British people were slaves to the lords and royal family. And forced to work to death all there lives tied to prisons. Yet they think the British people were over there pointing and laughing at the Welsh? Truly ignorant people and culture.
Look at the state of them
You wearing a three piece suit and a bowler hat then? Had a good look at your typical EDF/ NF/ Britain First supporters?
Mad how many of you hate us just for living in a slightly different part of the country.
I guess people from Wales who are British are fond of monarch and England
They're all British
Technically there not because first they identify themselves from their native country then they can be considered British if they want as it's really an optional thing
Na Welsh not British. Can’t stand the union or the English!
As I white 46 year old bold English man, that loves football… I salute you the Welsh, Scottish and Irish. You all punch way above your heads and succeed. Unfortunately If I say “I’m proud to be English” I’m seen as racist.
