A Black woman named Akela Cooper wrote M3GAN ( with James Wan). She also wrote Malignant and a movie called Hell Fest. She's writing The Nun 2 and working on the sequel to M3GAN. The original was a success.
I watched the movie last week (it was released in December 2022 here in France, instead of January 2023 like in the USA). It turned out to be how I expected it: not great, not very original, but a good horror movie overall that uses with more or less subtlety the common fears of nowadays, such as artificial intelligence, robotics, dépendance to technology and modernization, etc. It also connects quite cleverly to parenting, and negligence, as the trailers suggested I also appreciated a couple of themes that were also tackled, such as grief and addiction. Some good scenes, some mediocre ones. It's surprisingly soft in terms of violence (less blood than you'd escape from this type of movie). Don't expect to be terrified. The movie uses the uncanny valley cleverly (both in matter of how the robot-doll looks and how she acts), and the tone varies in-between straight classic horror and dark comedy. The kill scenes are very classic, yet efficient. Also, don't expect anything super-original though, the movie reuses some formulas and tropes seen in Child's Play (2019) or The Orphan, but I had a very good time, overall. The movie fulfils its goal and fits the discretion James Wan gave in interviews, regarding its social commentary about how we rely too much on technology and how it will never replace a person, a parent. I also think the character of M3gan has the potential of becoming a horror icon. She's much better, in my suggestive opinion, than Anabelle, and she's the best variation of the trope of killer dolls since Chucky, imo. That's why I'm looking forward to a sequel. In short, imperfect, flawed, but interesting in its subject and enjoyable. My verdict: 6.5 / 10
We better get Megan merchandise or the fans will riot. Shirts don't count. Megan dolls, handbags, makeup collection kits, silicone masks and jewelry and well done costumes.
Could they have made a different color Megan can you imagine if this showed in China with a Chinese Megan or an Mexican Meagan in Mexico or would it be racist to do so ??? Food for thought !! 👽👽👽👽
