They say: “British English is the correct and more precise English”. Then, how about American English? American English is closer to early forms of Early Modern English (the language of Shakespeare, Spenser, and Chaucer). Much of American English is older than British English. English is a West Germanic language that originated from Anglo-Frisian dialects brought to Britain in the mid 5th to 7th centuries AD by Anglo-Saxon migrants from what is now northwest Germany, southern Denmark and the Netherlands. Anglo-Saxon from Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire is actually the purest form of English. No English is more correct than any other. Language transforms and changes ALL THE TIME. Even in British English, there are many words that are added to and removed from dictionaries every year! So, the Philippines has the right and title to develop their own English and English accent. Cheers 🥂 to that Brown brothers!
Funny I always thought that American English is just derived from British English. Most modern Americans are refugees from England. So I thought they just brought the British language and modified it. Thanks for the lesson and for piquing my curiosity.
English is germanic mixed with corrupted latin. Middle and old english are hardly understandable much less the old saxon, jute and angle languages of the late antiquity. Edit: words are spoken and written differently because of vowel shifts as well as different foreign influences during specific times when certain words were started to be written.
@Ganda Gandara - How?... British English accent was developed in the 1800's, while American English accent is closer to the original, because the migrants migrated to the Americas before British English accent was developed.
