An alternative to buying the punch set is using a step drill. I’ve used it successfully for a half dozen guards. Works like a charm and you get nice clean cuts. Plus, it’s a tool you’ll use a lot more often that the punch set and had a much wider range of use when drilling different size holes.

So, the real reason to run bar ends is not to protect your grips, it's to protect your body. Falling on top of a metal straw is an easy way to get impaled by a handle bar. Guy pitted next to me at a road course high sided a while back. He wasn't running bar ends and had the end of the clip on driven into his knee. You could have dropped a shot glass into the hole where it took a plug of meat out of him. Hell, I had a get off on the dirt bike not 2 months ago and landed on the bar end with my stomach. I run wrap around hand guards so all I got was a bruise. But having a metal tube sticking out of your bike isn't a good thing in a crash.

Bruce Brown no it’s to protect the ends of your bar from being crushed

kyle you can put the bar end right up to bar just undo throttle and move it in that smidgen to create clearance then won't have a issue with it if you take a fall and won't notice your throttle in 3 or 4 mm unless it mucks with your balance man

phil perrin yeah that’s the proper way to put on bar ends. First impact on the bar end it’s gonna slide but up against the end of the bar anyways. Just move all controls in.

Yep thats the way ive always done it - for bar ends or wrap around guards. Learned the hard way after i had to ride back one day with the throttle sticking hardcore after a drop.

But I bet that grip cutter doesn't cut that perfect. You may have to use a knife and cut to the full size of the bar.

Just move the throttle assembly over a few mm and then the risk of it jamming
In a fall is gone if the bar end is hard up in the bar.

chris marshall good advice. I keep my grips 1/16 to 1/8 inward from the end of my bars. I use cycra hand guards.

Hey Kyle. If you don’t want to move your throttle position, maybe look at putting another washer between the bar end guard and the bar. If it will work I am not to sure. Check and see

I just put these on my 2019 beta trials bike today. I wanted them on mine to protect the throttle in case the bike falls on the throttle it would not wind out and damage the motor. I used a dremel tool and made sure it was perfectly smooth inside, removed the throttle assembly so i could grease it on the inside then replaced it, and slid it further onto the handlebar. With the bar end against the handlebar i still have about 1/16" space between the hand grip and the bar end. This way if it does take a hit or just lands on the throttle ... hopefully .. the throttle should return to the off position.

Just put bark busters on and you dont have to worry about it i have the cycra wrap arounds but i ride tight single track if you ride moto cross or open trails those would be great

    • @onthethrottle7104

Bark busters are extremely dangerous to all that read this. Do not use bark busters, you get your arm caught in between when making a mistake while riding and snap your arm or something worse. I was riding with a pro rider and his hand came off while going through whoops, his arm went down through between the grip and the bark buster and what a nasty wreck, ended up breaking his back and a bunch of ribs. No way, don't run those things, I've heard of others getting their wrists and arms broken as well.

I've thought about doing these so I don't have to replace grips as often. But it seems the throttle side can easily get sand/dirt/grit in under the tube and make the throttle sticky. Does this happen when the bike goes down in loose dirt?

    • @ecrow6
      @ecrow6 6 років тому

Yes. Sand can enter your throttle tube with full hanguards also.

With 150.00 clutch master cylinder and 150.00 brake master cylinder and 50.00 a pice levers I can't afford not to run 100 dollar hand guards. Kinda like radiator guards and pipe /skid Plate combo guard.

Other benefit - not having the throttle pulled wide open when you crash, which can happen sometimes.

Personally if your going to cut the end of your grips for some of those you should probably just get some hand guards the ones I have on my bike look really good on KTMs

I'll repeat what I mentioned to another rider here: Do not use bark busters, you get your arm caught in between when making a mistake while riding and snap your arm or something worse. Hi Kyle, I have some wraparound handguards on my parts bike that I want to put on my main bike, but the thread part is in the old handle bars, how can I take these out so I can put the thread on my other bike? does that make any sense?

Henrik Crommelin you can buy new grip“nut and bolt” for your hand guards. Once those are in they stay in.

Kind of searching for content lately? 😉 Not being evil, I fully understand your situation. Why not thread them into the bar instead of using an expander/friction mount. I use "BarkBusters" that thread right into the bar, should be able to do the same with this type of device.
