Great video Ty. Minor correction: The latent heat of atmospheric moisture is not 970 btu/lb. That is the latent heat of steam at 0 psig or 14.7 Pisa. The atmospheric moisture is at near vacuum around 0.25 psia. Depends on the dew point. A number like 1060 btu/lb is more like it.
Oh yeah, the funky pressure being the sum of all partial pressures. Since water is a tiny fraction of the vapor it has a tiny partial pressure. Weird to think about. Same reason non condensables give you high head pressure but saturation lower than it should be, thanks to its partial pressure being lower than the addition of mostly nitrogen pressure.
Super informative Ty.! I can’t wait for a more in depth video to clean an evap. My unit is only about 3 years old. But I’d like to clean it fully. When I took my front panel off a few months ago to insulate my sensing bulb I tried looking at how to take out my evap to clean. But I didn’t wanna get to far that I couldn’t get it back in. So can’t wait for that more in depth cleaning video.!

Great video, thank you! I had a question. How do you feel about making the evaporator a 1/2 ton larger than the condenser to increase run time to help with dehumidification?
A larger evaporator alone will be worse at dehumidification. The larger coil will absorb more heat raising the suction pressure raising suction saturated, that moves the coil temperature farther from the dew point. You have to combine a larger coil with slower airflow to allow more contact time with the coil. That slower airflow could cause the ducts to condensate and sweat. AHRI has performance charts and system matching options that take all this into account. Here is a link that will explain that. hvacrschool.com/an-evaporator-coil-with-no-fins/
Great question, Liquid line Ice formation will be from a restriction on the high side. Suction line Ice formation is because the line temperature is below 32. In residential that is bad but for commercial application such as freezers, Ice makers, custards and more that can be completely normal. Superheat will be vital for that.
There are a quick connection between lines, do you think these connections works with evaporator instead of brazing? The evaporator which it’s made for humidity weather it’s different than the evaporator which it’s made for dry climate in fins or in what? What kind of brazing use between copper and aluminum or aluminum to aluminum? Thanks 🌷🌿
Great questions. I do not know how to braze between copper and aluminum. It's usually all copper coming out of the unit. That's what we connect to. I'm not sure about those quick connects yet.
Same coil for both environments. Some cost line units will have a salt corrosion inhibitor coating. A different size coil will may be used for a diffrent climate. You can have all copper evaporators made that should last forever but they are expensive.
How do domestic air conditioners control relative humidity? As far as I know that in the ACs only cooling and dehumidification take place. But at the dew point, RH of the air remains 100%. Please clear up my doubts.
Many ways methods. I will cover this more in phycrometrics. By slowing the airflow the suction pressure and suction saturated drops farther below dew point removing more moisture. Varable refregerant flow units will also adjust the compressor speed to assist with this also. We can also apply electric reheat to maintain a temperature while removing more moisture. The humidity immediately after the evaporator coil will be higher but less moisture content (fewer grains of moisture) then as the air mixes with the remaining air the over all humidity drops also. Humidity is relative to temperature and overall is a poor way to discuss moisture content but it's what people can relate to the most.
Hi you made a technical error when you were talking about latten heat in the air that has water vapor in it. It takes 970 BTU of heat energy to raise the temperature of hot water that is at 212 deg f to change its state from water to a gas vapor to be steam. For every one pound of water. It takes 144 BTU to change cold water at 32 deg to change its liquid state to a sold state. Now it is ice. For every one pound of water. And it takes 144 BTU of heat added to one pound of ice to change its solid state back to a liquid state water. And it must be pure water with no salt in it. It doesn't take 970 BTU of heat to be removed from the air At the dew point. To remove the cold water vapor out of the air. That only applies to making hot steam. Thanks ken HVACR tech😢
Its a case by case basis. Cost and availability has gone very high lately. The old coils that where built well, would clean. Some companies only sell, some only condition, but for me its case by case basis.
It’s time for the industry to build “ a better mouse trap”. We know that brazing is the major cause if leaks so how about making an A coil WITHOUT braze joints by bending one continuous copper tube . Yes, I know that this isn’t easy but we have to do something to make these better.
The problem is its leaking in the tuning now more so than the brazed connections. www.achrnews.com/articles/104661-troubling-pinhole-leaks-in-evaporator-coils-cause-corrosion-issues
I agree Here is a nice article on it but I think it comes down to lower quality, cheaper and thinner copper. www.achrnews.com/articles/104661-troubling-pinhole-leaks-in-evaporator-coils-cause-corrosion-issues
I believe it's poor evacuation methods! I've watch tubers put the micron gauges on the pump itself or on the pump side of the system, and I also know some only use manifold gauges for the evacuation and wait one hour for any movement than release the charge. 🍺🍺🍺🥃🥃🍿🏌🏻♀️ Stay safe. I'm 62 and have learned more from TY than anywhere else. He has really cleared a lot of questions up for me. Great work!
First time I see a great teacher saying poetry in HVAC Way. Thank you so much.
Using this a my hvac class while im on summer. Really appreciate you being so in depth.
Very good presentation covering some overlooked air flow protential issues. I learned a lot Thank You .
That evaporator is wearing a wool sweater made from Ireland. Great informative video. Thanks ty.
Love from India🇮🇳
I just want to thank you for helping me to understand the refrigiatian cycle.
Love it.. always learning something new thanks ty. I can't wait for your air flow videos
Thank you Ty. Good video. It is funny the comment on replacing back the filters because "they don't get dirty".

When do we need to add holes to the condensate drain line cap?
Yes I will cover that when I get to drain lines
Sir, in R410A case, at what subcool or super heat level, can be top-up allowed?
410a can be topped off easily, unlike other blends. Charge to the manufacture specification.
