Portis Vecchio, along the State Road 13 Pontebbana north of Venzone, is the only town where it is still possible to see the effects of the 1976 earthquake that shocked Friuli. It is no longer possible to live here because the area remains subject to rock collapses from the nearby mountain, which is why the town was rebuilt in another part of the municipality.
It remained a ghost town. In the houses, marked by deep cracks, between the broken window frames you can glimpse the internal rooms, in which some of the furniture remains. Those who lived there before 1976 can continue to cultivate vegetable gardens and use some shacks as tool storage.
Now Portis Vecchio has become a training center for the SERM Academy, an international training school for seismic emergency response management.

Portis Vecchio, lungo la Statale 13 Pontebbana a nord di Venzone, è l’unico paese dove è ancora possibile vedere gli effetti del terremoto del 1976 che ha sconvolto il Friuli. Qui non si può più abitare perchè l’area resta soggetta a crolli di massi dalla vicina montagna, ecco perché il paese è stato ricostruito in un altro punto del comune.
E’ rimasto un paese fantasma. Nelle case, segnate da profonde crepe, tra gli infissi spaccati si possono intravedere i locali interni, nei quali resta a memoria un po’ di mobilio. Chi ci viveva prima del 1976 può continuare a coltivare gli orti e a usare qualche baracca come deposito di attrezzi.
Ora Portis Vecchio è diventato polo di addestramento della SERM Academy, scuola internazionale di formazione per la gestione della risposta in emergenza sismica.
