- Arguably the greatest drummer of all time, the legendary Buddy Rich exhibited his love for music through a dedication of his life to the art. His career spanned seven decades, beginning when Rich was 18 months old and continuing until his death in 1987. Immensively gifted, Rich could play with remarkable speed and dexterity despite the fact that he never received a formal lesson and refused to practise outside his performances. In this 1978 concert, with maybe his best band ever, he shows how unique he is as a performer and bandleader. The show was recorded in 1978 during the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Congresgebouw, The Hague, the Netherlands.
Line up: Buddy Rich (Drums), Tom Warrington (Bass Guitar), Bob Kaye (Piano), John Marshall, Mike McGovern, Mark Ohlsen, Chuck Schmidt (Trumpets), Dale Kirkland, Glenn Franke, George Moran (Trombones), Steve Marcus, Gary Pribeck, Chuck Wilson, Andy Fusco, Greg Smith (Saxes)
Grand Concourse (Kaye)

This is the official UA-cam channel of World of Jazz.
This chart is so fantastically written by Buddy’s pianist Bob Kaye.
That’s a tough arrangement - it’s still amazes me that Buddy learned these things by ear after hearing them, maybe two times and playing them a couple of times. Freakish memorization skills and just crazy speed and endurance and intensity on the drums. I saw him perform live a dozen times and he still amazes me all these years later.
My young Bob so talented such a genius a great arrangement miss him so much.
???
Bob truly was a terrific pianist. Does the title refer to Grand Concourse in the Bronx? That is where I live (nearby). He was a Bx native? Who wrote the comment above?? Thank you.
There is no argument Buddy was the grand master of his instrument, all other drummers and there are some truly great drummers when they look at Buddy Rich they look upward

Buddy Rich Big Band - July 1978 Europe Tour (incl. N.Sea Jazz Fest.)
Couple of really weird comments here. Boy oh boy, UA-cam brings out the best in humanity, doesn’t it?
I'd say the "The New One" band 1966 was his best big band.
Just an opinion, I can see this as #2 or #1.
Combos are a different category.
Buddy and Bob Kaye should have taken the sacrifice fly and joined the Count Basie Band .....this band just blows their load at the expense of melody. Why did Buddy need to buy a hairpiece. He could have taken some from Steve Marcus.
