Great video Jason as always! I know that your limited to only a few radios and a lot of people may not have the same radio. You may suggest to your Patron's to maybe do a video similar to this one, but showing the radio they use. For example, maybe someone is using a Kenwood or Icom or another Yaesu radio. Like me, I have a Yaesu but it is the FT-817ND. But the setup should be the same as the 857 or the 891 I think when it comes to the DATA and ACCESSORY ports. I have a uBitx radio that I am going to end up trying to see if I can incorporate the Pi with it, especially since it is a 10 watt radio. Well let you know what happens when I try. Keep up the good work my friend, as I have told you over and over, you saved my Pi from collecting dust or going into a scrap bin. 73 Juddie WD8WV
Provided you have CAT for PTT the Sabrent is the way to go. Much smaller and works equally as well as the Signalink. And the Sabrent is cheap enough to have a backup on hand.....just in case.
Going to start looking into setting up my HF FT-857 to do Winlink. Help me out here, can I just buy a mobilinkd TNC3 and avoid all those cables and programming issues with the raspberry pi?? Blue tooth the TNC3 to an android phonw or windows computer and I'm done? In addition, can I use the same mobilinkd to attach to an analog fm HT and communicate on vhf?
Doesn't look like he has the short cable right now. This is the same one but 3 feet long. www.ebay.com/itm/154518321764?hash=item23fa027a64:g:SCEAAOSwnDpaI31s You might reach out to the seller and see if he can make one 12 inches long.
Yes. You could run with just the phone GPS streaming to the Pi and that is what I do now the majority of the time. I also keep a USB GPS in my bag as a backup in case the phone is out of juice.
Need a few more details like the type of sound card, version of Pi OS you are using. Best place to seek tech support is in the forum. I jump in every morning an answer as many questions as I can. groups.io/g/KM4ACK-Pi/topics
The hamdaptor store on eBay, which is where I bought mine, seems to be closed more than it is open recently. I would reach out the the guys at hammadeparts.com/ If they don't have an existing cable, the can custom make one for you.
Hi Jason, can you please provide the links to buy the cables to emulate the same config? I couldn't find for example the hamdapter cable. thank you! TI2GBB -greg

Thank you for the video it goes to help with setup. My I prefer an external antenna for the GPS. I have found that gets a better signal an a better lock to the satellites. In your setup is in the clear that is less an issue.
Just wondering why you didn’t use the USB CAT cable for both Rig control and audio? Thought the 891 supported that. Reason for asking is the ic-7300 I have hooked up to fldigi (thanks to Your excellent videos) is working that way
Hello Jason, thanks for this video! I just bought a FT891 and I'm planning to use it on some fieldays or expeditions inside of Costa Rica, I was thinking to use a rasperry pi, I have one question for you; Do you know what type of software I can use to work FT8 and also record or save the log to upload later via Log40m or JTAlert? I want to have the possibility to work many stations via FT8 and after finish the activity, if I don't have internet, to save the log and then upload when the internet Arrives ( for example when you go to a mountain were there is not internet connectivity) Thanks and 73s! Great videos! I am trying to decide between my first HF Radio and I have come down to the FT-891 and the IC-7100. Is there any reason to choose the FT-891 over the IC-7100? Can the rasberry pi be used with the IC-7100 just as well as the FT-891? I like the 2m and 70 cm bands that come with the IC-7100.
The FT-891 is a great radio but Yaesu really dropped the ball by not including an audio interface. With the popularity of working all the different types of digital/packet modes, there’s really no excuse for manufacturers not including one in a radio these days.
Unfortunately I don’t know of a supplier. I have been meaning to contact Les at HamMadeParts and see if he could make on. I stink at making cables. If you find a short one please share the link.
Great content as usual, Jason! Other than the heat shrink, did you make any modifications to the USB sound card? Some of them have a DC voltage bias to power a microphone, and I've heard that can cause issues with some radios. Maybe that cable has a DC blocking capacitor in it. Does anyone know? Also, any issues with using non-isolated connections? (no 1:1 transformers, like the Signalink or other similar interfaces)
That's all nice 'n neat.....but the critical part for digital is how you gonna talk to the pi. I have an 891 and Pi 3....was using Monitor, KB, Mouse. Too messy....changed to a laptop. Yes I know that you can use a phone or tablet whose micro screen I don't like. Even the 15" LT screen gets small. Since I don't back pack...space and neatness isn't as critical to me. Thanks, keep 'em coming.
Good video. Have you found a suitable case for the Pi, including the add-on board? I think taking an exposed piece of electronics like the Pi into the field would risk getting dirt and or moisture into the Pi. I work in a pretty dus, dirty environment sometimes, and it is always a constant fight to keep the stuff out of my equipment - and my sandwiches! Happy to hear any suggestions from you or any viewers. 73 SV0SGS
Some of us are hardware guys and some are software guys. A few are both. If you can home brew the cable and enjoy that type of thing....go for it. Personally I hate building cables and prefer to hand a few bucks to someone else who both enjoys it and produces a quality cable.
Sound card cable adapter does not seem to be currently available, any suggestions for a similar cable?

I have a rig blaster. Would it work the same and what software would I use.
I’m so impressed I subscribed.
Love your work!
What do I need to do to achieve the same with a Yaesu 857 which lacks the usb port? Thanks.

They make clear heat shrink tubing. I would use that so you can see your light on your gps.
Am I thinking correctly that being able to connect to gps via phone would eliminate the need for the GPS part of this setup?
Yes. You could run with just the phone GPS streaming to the Pi and that is what I do now the majority of the time. I also keep a USB GPS in my bag as a backup in case the phone is out of juice.
Just did those exactly for my Ft897d and the pic is not recognizing the sound card, but my windows laptop does. Any suggestions.

Unlike the Icom 7300, it takes two separate cables for the 891.
Community, Any CAT cable suggetions for the FT-450 (older), FT-897 and ICOM-718 (if needed)?
Cool video. That's pretty much my setup without the powerboard. What is the case you are using?
This case amzn.to/344Widx I leave off the top 2 sections of the case to fit the power board.
@@KM4ACK thanks. 73
Is this for APRS?
It can be used for APRS and several other digital modes.
@@KM4ACK Thanks, a big help for my thesis.

Informative video as always - What is the benefit of using a Signalink over Sabrent USB - As there is a big price difference
The signalink is easier to initially setup and is compatible with more radios. Especially HT's because of it's built in VOX circuit.
clear heat shrink would take care of your issue with the gps led
What case are pairing with the power board?
This one amzn.to/344Widx and I leave the top 2 sections of the case off so the board will fit.

Hi Jason, what are the side rails on your 891, are from Portable 0?
Yes. Portable Zero. Great rails!
Would it be possible to remote control the FT-891 over the internet using the PPi (SSB mode)?
Yes. ua-cam.com/video/DBfyQRvOmag/v-deo.html
Great video. A question, for the 817er I only need another CAT cable or can I set it up right away? 73 OE3AGH Andi
You will need a CAT cable for rig control. You can run without rig control if you wish. The 817 uses the same cable as the 857.

I haven't found a great case for this setup yet. What you see in the video is exactly how I take mine into the field.
Where's the PTT wiring connection there?
PTT is handled through the CAT port.
