  • Lisa Gade reviews the Wacom Cintiq Companion 2, a Windows 8.1 Pro tablet aimed at professional artists. The 3.75 lb. Cintiq 2 is both a tablet PC and a drawing tablet and it uses Wacom’s traditional EMR pen with 2,048 levels of pressure sensitivity and tilt sensing.
    ** Read our written review here: www.mobiletechr...
    The 13.3” tablet has a QHD IPS 2560 x 1440 display that supports both the included Wacom Pro Pen and touch. It’s available with Intel 5th gen Broadwell dual core 28 watt CPUs with Intel Iris 6100 graphics. You can get it with Core i3, i5 and i7 CPUs, 4 to 16 gigs of RAM and 64 to 512 gig SSDs. It’s not cheap: prices run from $1,400 to $2,500. Is it better than Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and the iPad Pro? Watch our review to find out! This is a computer system or holistic review rather than an artist's demo review-- there are already several artist reviews available on UA-cam.

    I really need to throw my opinions into the mix here. First off, I am a professional storyboard/ concept artist for advertising, music videos and motion pictures. I have been working in this field for over 30 years. I have been using the Cintiq Companion 2 for about six months. I have to say that when everyone compares the Companion to products like the iPad Pro, or the Surface Pro; it is like comparing a sports car to something like a Ford F150. The iPads are very nimble and great for using on the go, and they're fast and speedy, but when it comes down to real work and heavy lifting, the Companion is a superior device. The Companion is portable, and yet not as conveniently portable as either the iPad or the Surface tablets. However, the intention of the Companion is that it is a mobile work station. People like me maybe work 50% of the time in our own studios and the other 50% traveling to production companies, advertising agencies, and sometimes on set. The ONE thing Lisa neglected to mention in her review (which I thought was excellent, but wasn't from the point of view of how this tablet was meant to be used professionally) was that the Companion can work as a stand alone PC, OR you can plug it into your desktop or laptop and use it as a slave graphics tablet to your computer, so it becomes an extension of your PC or Mac, with access to all the graphics software you already use and own. I often use my laptop monitor to look at reference and draw on the Cintiq. So whenever I have to work away from home, I can set up a work station on set, not require very much desk space, and I have a 100% working studio environment. This set up is important to me because often I need to create as many as 30 to 40 detailed drawings a day, keep them in folders relating to shot lists, and instantly share them with directors and crew members. I can see this might be possible with the iPad Pro, but it's still early days yet with that device, and I don't know if I can depend on an iPad to do the file organization that I need. Also it often necessary to edit artwork that I may have created in (say) Sketchbook Pro and modify it in Photoshop, so the Cintiq handles all of those things with excellent speed and efficiency. Now, everyone stop crying about the price of this device. This is intended to be a professional working device. If all you are really doing is your little manga pin-up drawings, then other more inexpensive tablets are just for you, and they all pretty much work great; but if you are a professional artist with tight deadlines and have to produce high quality artwork, and have to move around from agencies to production companies, the Cintiq it what you need. The Companion is an extremely niche product, but for those of us that need something with all it's capabilities, it's as good as it gets until the next generation of devices. When I get an iPad Pro, I'll probably throw in my 2 cents on that product, but right now my inclination is to wait for version 2.0 on the iPad.

      +artisan555 P.S. Yes, the stand is ugly and seems like an in-elegant solution for propping up the device, but it totally works and it's completely stable, so I don't worry about it too much. But we all wish for something a little more elegant.

      +artisan555 wise words. im a college art student hoping to break into the creative industry you are in. i have the ipad and the cintiq companion 2. the ipad is a great drawing tool but lacks all the important tools/features like you mention. since i bought the ipad, ive only used it a handful of times while the cintiq is my daily workhorse. it cracks me up watching consumer amateurs brag about how much better the ipad pro is. i own one its totally overrated. i hope real artists looking to invest find your post.

    • @mobiletechreview

      +artisan555 Couldn't agree more-- it's a strong niche product for the pros, which is what I was getting at in this review. Lots of folks who aren't hard core pros also consider this device, and it's important to point out other options available to them.

      +3212adolfo I guess so for professionals. I just wonder why the Cintiq companion 2, and not the Cintiq 13hd if it is just for input.
      I have to admit, it's pricy for a full tablet Windows with old gen specs.

    • @UnknownGunslinger
      @UnknownGunslinger 8 років тому +5

      +Mathieu Bouvier I love Wacom but you are right. They should've kept their relationship with Microsoft on the Surfaces instead of pulling out because they thought it was cannibalizing their future profits.
      The Companion is just too expensive for what you get, and the 16:9 screen ratio is not appropriate.
      Microsoft is still behind in the stylus game with the N-trig but they are catching up. Then the Surface Pro would really be almost perfect.

    This is a great review. I've had my Wacom Cintiq Companion two for years. It isn't great for movies because of the glare, but it is a great pen tablet. I hardly use the computer at all. My touch interface is shot and I found out it would probably take 600.00 to repair it. One side of my "screen" is out from the frame while the other is firmly ensconced in it. Around the left side of the frame there are white hazy spots and it appears some dirt or particles have gotten under the protective film. Still, I love this tablet.

      I've been looking into getting a new tablet pc for drawing. I originally got the surface pro 4, but the drawing experience on it is terrible (I ended up plugging a wacom into it for art).
      Given the experiences you've had with this wacom pc, would you not recommend them? I'm torn between this, an iPad and a Samsung tablet.

    • @jimgleeson1695
      @jimgleeson1695 Рік тому

      Lilly, My guess is if you get one of these that is this model, it will be a refurb or someone is selling it. I'd ask to try it before I buy it and make sure that the touch is disabled..or enabled when you want it to be. The touch only works on one side of my Wacom and like I said, it would cost 600.00 to repair it, which you might as well just get a new one. Despite all that, when it works it works well.
      I have not used an iPad for drawing so it is hard to know if I would recommend it over a new iPad Pro or a Samsung.

    Thanks, Lisa.
    Didn't expect this.
    As an owner I agree on your points.
    Express keys are super useful on a mobile drawing device. That and the Wacom drivers and pen really are the separators of this from consumer products. The stand still especially bugs me though.
    Small note, you can open it, however you WILL void the warranty and may cosmetically damage your device if you aren't very careful with the plastic covers. There are two SODIMMs, an M.2 SSD and the wifi card is swappable.
    The screen protector is also an easy swap.
    Awesome device for those who won't compromise on the digitiser. (like me)
    Anyone else will hate it.

    HI Lisa. Love your reviews, especially because of your focus on pens and styluses (stylii?). However, I do wish you would cover all of the stylus-enabled products available. For example, I have yet to see you review the Asus Zenpad S 8.0 with the Z-stylus. I bought one already, but I'd still really like to see what you think of it, particularly the Z-stylus (I still I have no idea which digitizer technology it uses).

  • @kefler187
    @kefler187 8 років тому +1

    The best product reviewer in my opinion on youtube. The way Lisa presents benchmarks is far more informative than other reviewers because she compares to it *usually* relevant hardware and not something that's totally meant for a different niche and/or price category*. The apple mobile product comparisons are getting old though. Apple mobile devices are geared purely towards content consumption and not content creation so the comparison of a cintiq product to an ipad was just stupid... sorry but it's true; it's like comparing a desktop PC to an MP4 player.. However, in Lisa's defense, as she has posted a response below to artisan555 or one of their responses, other people aside from digital media content creators do buy these things which is a valid statement because wacom products have down right awesome build quality.

    • @JayJapanB
      @JayJapanB 8 років тому

      +Kefler Who are you to say what all content creators use? I have a companion 2 and a 24HD however, I have a teacher at university who creates comic books (not just web comic doodles) and does teaching on the side. He isn't a fan on cintiqs at all uses an Ipad Pro. He's even a windows guy for the most part so it's not that he buys everything with and apple on it. Sure he still does some stuff with the Intuos on the PC but that doesn't mean he can't work on the Ipad. The draw backs to IOS are obvious but not all professionals would care. Each to their own. Even with $4000 dollars of wacom stuff sitting in front of me and no apple computers in sight I still think the Cintiq elitism is bullshit.

    • @kefler187
      @kefler187 8 років тому

      +JayJapanB I never said anything about what content creators should use or even expressed my opinion on it; you read into that on your own. The only opinions I expressed were what the hardware were geared for and of course my critique about the reviewer.
      "Cintiq elitism is bullshit" I don't own any wacom products( not even a touchscreen using their tech ) so if that comment was aimed towards me, I don't think that quite works out XD

    • @JayJapanB
      @JayJapanB 8 років тому

      +Kefler So, if content creators use them and you understand that then why are the comparisons irrelevant?
      You said: "the comparison of a cintiq product to an ipad was just stupid"
      Why are you saying something like that when you don't have a Wacom device? Where's your experience?
      I've used the Ipad Pro briefly and 5 different Cintiq models extensively. The Ipad works great and if you work in storyboarding, comics or even concept art you could professionally work off of it. If you are aware of it's caveats you can make an informed decision of how far an Ipad will take your work.

    • @kefler187
      @kefler187 8 років тому

      +JayJapanB They were designed for different segments of consumers and different purposes. Telling me the Cintiq is a better graphics tablet than the ipad pro does not reveal any information i( or any capable content creator looking for a graphics tablet ) didn't assume from the get go, or vice versa for media consumption. I don't know about you and your ability to search youtube, but there are a billion and one ipad reviews out there, including a very nice one by Lisa on the different ipads in which she covers( if only on a limited bases ) it's potential as a graphical tablet for sketching and what not. The companion 2 aside, if you didn't know about the caveats of using an iPad as a digital content creation tablet before watching this video, then you're no more qualified to criticize what I have said than I am qualified to review a Cintiq product. ( I haven't btw XD )

    • @JayJapanB
      @JayJapanB 8 років тому

      Kefler Oh, but I did know about the caveats of an Ipad, so I will criticize what you said. Both devices are able to be drawn on and both are used by creative professionals. Sure, that might be where the similarities end but it still brings them into the conversation. Your comment about that being "stupid" is uneducated.

    The most noticeable difference between N-Trig and Wacom is that N-Trig currently does not really register feather light strokes, which is an important benefit for Wacom as that can go a long way toward replicating the feel of using a real pencil.
    Also it's been a while (over a year) since this CC2 was released, so I'm hoping there will be a CC3 that brings some new innovation now that there is much tougher competition. For now I'm reasonably happy with the results I'm getting on my SP4 with Clip Studio.

    My friend has this and says it's a total heat and noise machine. Considering it's so expensive and meant to run powerful programs, you would think wacom would have designed it with a better ventilation system, better backlight, and more consumer-friendly features for when artists need some downtime. At any rate, I think I'm just going to go for the Ipad or Surface. Wacom needs to step it up if they want to compete with the emerging tablet market. They've had it pretty cozy for the past twenty years or so, but they're going to have to change up their game (and prices) if they intend on staying on top for much longer.

Even if I would raise money to buy something as expensive as this, it doesn't look like it will be worth it in this case.

    I'm presently trying to figure out what would fit best into my workflow, this or an iPad Pro. I'm primarily a Windows user, and am very hesitant to venture into Apple territory (all my Apple tech are 'inherited' and quite outdated). But the price of a Cintiq is quite scary (my wallet and bank account would definitely try and murder me in my sleep over such a purchase).
    The review helped me very much...and it looks like I'll have to venture into personally un-chartered waters.
    Thanks for the amazing review, I watched the iPad Pro review before this one.

    The 2 main things that bother me are diagonal jitter and parallax. It's such a shame you have to live with at least one of these problems. The iPad Pro seems to have neither but only offers a tablet OS so is pretty useless for professional work. The CC2 is £450 more than the SP4 in the UK and just doesn't seem worth the extra unless you specifically need tilt and rotate functionality.
    Thanks for the review Lisa, you're the best

    • @elliotrussellelliot
      @elliotrussellelliot 8 років тому

      +videoreivew Disagree. I've used Wacom EMR products everyday for years and the parallax is workable but far from a non-issue. I do animation/storyboarding etc and pen tip to cursor accuracy is so important. Considering how much of a premium you pay for Wacom products like the Cintiqs I would expect the parallax to be much less or non existent.

      +Elliot Russell Paeallax is worse then diagonal jitter, It was awful on the surface pro 1 and 2 with wacom

    • @elliotrussellelliot
      @elliotrussellelliot 8 років тому

      +videoreivew But compared to any kind of pencil its far behind. The future does look promising though now Ntrig and Apple (and Wacom's own AES) have made the parallax much less.

    I wanted this for my shoulder problems but I had to settle for the Cintiq13HD. I'm honestly thinking of just getting the Surface Pro, even if it's Windows, but I'm not really sure...
    The 13HD is really good, but I hate having to sit up and lean over all day while my shoulder muscle/s shrivel up. Ugh. Should I trade my Cintiq for a Surface Pro?

    The iPad pro is a much more accurate and pleasurable device to draw on. It is amazing how the Cintiq is basically lagging behind a device like the iPad pro that is not intended to be a daily driver for artists, although it is converting many. The Cintiq's are snobbish in their pricing and sense of importance. With the iPad pro the ink goes precisely where the tip of the pencil goes.

    After two years of average usage, my WACOM Cintiq Companion 2's screen will not light up. The LED on the right indicates that the unit is on, however, the screen is dead. It was an expensive purchase and since the warrant has expired, a repair would cost another $800. I am totally disappointed by this purchase

    I believe that Wacom has been holding a monopoly over the artistic field for far too long, so you either have a Wacom or you don't. It's nice to have Apple, Microsoft, Monoprice and others finally stepping on Wacom's toes and waking this sleeping giant up (fingers crossed). Hopefully from this year on we could see better Cintiq's and prices as well.

    • @NextWorldVR

      How and where is anyone stepping on toes? The Surface Pro's i7 is under powered, the Z Canvas has a 4th gen proc (they all have 3rd or 4th gen) And NONE of them have Tilt reaction, 2048 levels of sensitivity, 5th gen proc. NONE of thm have 6 progammable application specific hotkeys and arrow and a home button .. add that to the patented high-end battery free wireless Pen ... No other machine comes close much less stepping on toes!

    Don't speak of PC. That's a GRAPHIC TABLET. Not a PC.
    Surface pro and iPad pro are for working, Wacom is for drawing. Wacom has a mat surface that is comfortable for drawing, Surface pro and iPad pro has a glassy surface that is not very comfortable. With Wacom you can rest your hand in the screen, on a glass surface you can't.
    So you compare it to a laptop, but just, don't. Wacom Cintiq Companion is definitely NOT a PC.

    Hi Lisa, thank you for the excellent review but more importantly, for saving me $2,500. I would have been very disappointed and very pissed off if I had purchased this device. Wacom needs to go back to the drawing board so to speak (pun intended) and redesign this device. It is inexcusable that a device this expensive that is meant for graphic professionals would have such a horrible and piece of crap screen. This device totally missed the mark. I don't mind paying for quality equipment but this is just an example of Wacom just being greedy.

    • @leeice5347
      @leeice5347 8 років тому

      +videoreivew My problem is not with the price itself, my problem is that they are marketing this device as a premium product geared for graphic professionals but they used such a POOR quality monitor/screen on this device. If I remember Lisa's review correctly, the Wacom Cintiq Companion 2 has only 73% adobe SRGB coverage and only 150 Nits of brightness. What good is a device that is made for graphic professionals if it cant display colors correctly and you can barely see the screen?

    • @Visual-Synthesizer
      @Visual-Synthesizer 8 років тому +1

      +Lee Ice i dont know man, get what you want but i have an ipad pro and a cintiq 27 and a companion 2. i had the SP4 for a while, it was not good for drawing i returned it. sure the screen was a little better, but not enough for me to keep it. the companion screen looks great. its just as good as the ipad. you cant color calibrate the ipad. i put my photography side by side i cant tell a difference. i would love a better screen, but most of her complaints were about the textured screen protector. drawing without it is not as nice. the Viao z canvas has a better screen, but its not meant for drawing and painting. hope you find something you like.
