Hi there, you may have answered this before. Is this your yard? If so, what is the type of grass shown at 0:14? Do you have to trim it or is it free-growing? Thanks! And thanks for the video. #HomeDepot makes it hard to get a blade replaced there.

When tipping the mower up on it's side, make sure the carburetor is up, otherwise crankcase vent will dump oil into air filter.

Only thing I would say is the blade bolt should be tightened to spec. Only way to do this is with a torque wrench. If you just put elbow grease into it, this will keep it from falling off, but it might be too tight and hinder motor performance. Typically bolts in this style of mower need to be tightened to between 40 and 50 ft/lbs. Your manual should have the exact spec in it.

Nice video, good info, Only additional information I could recommend is the tilt the mower so the carburetor is up, on some models to crank case oil can work its way through the carburetor and onto the driveway

  • @Baileys.small.engine.repair
    @Baileys.small.engine.repair 2 роки тому +37

Guys here's an extra precaution tip that I hear many others mention!
When tilting your lawn mower to the side PLEASE make sure the carb and air filter are facing UP if you don't do this the oil could potentially run into the carburetor and the air filter and both items would need to be cleaned or possibly replaced! So please do this for safety and prevention of extra work!
    Hope was helpful :)

another good video. i used to bring blades in but its actually relaxing to sharpen by hand if you have a couple good tools (sharp pal , any tool at 30 degrees). the key is to follow the angle . If you mow often swap out blades after 10-12 cuts, makes a difference . Torque wrench , even a cheap one , is nice because it gives you leverage

Wood blocks can actually damage the angle of the mower blades because they bite into the wood and can warp as you apply force to loosen the bolt. The vice grips are a great idea. I have an atlas blade removal tool that cost about $10 that is the same concept.

Excellent video. I normally change the blade at the start of the season. The lawn mower has no gas in it (store it over winter that way). I remove the oil first (since i replace the oil at the start of the season); replace the blade, add oil and gas and start the fun. That way i don't worry about gas or oil spillage.

You forgot two critical steps: 1). You should ALWAYS pull the start cord slowly until you feel that it’s really tough to pull (full resistance). This places the piston at “top dead center” and ensures that both valves are CLOSED! This prevents most of the oil from filling inside the cylinder and creating a “hydro lock” situation next time you want to start it. It also prevents crankcase oil from running out past the exhaust valve and into the muffler, then onto your driveway. It also prevents oil from entering past the intake valve and into the carburetor itself. 2). When tipping the mower on its side, “which” side vs the other side is CRITICAL. Always tip the mower where the carburetor is up and the muffler side is closer to the “down” (the ground) side. Again, this minimizes large amounts of oil running to a side and out onto your driveway, should some oil leak past the closed (or partially closed) valves.
Bonus tip: I like the plastic bag in the gas tank trick, but you should wait until the fuel tank is near “empty” before changing the blade. That is all.

Love the vice grip/ C-clamp tip, definitely will use next time. Had been using a wood block and it always slips. This is one activity I do kind of dread doing with my ZTR mower, have to slide the cutting deck off and it's so heavy, and have 3 blades to deal with. I also put anti seize on the nut which helps to prevent corrosion. Also dielectric grease around the spark plug boot makes taking it off really easy and protects from water.

QUESTION: My Cub Cadet self-propelled push mower is currently on its fifth year. The mower has multiple problems over the last year, but I don't think the problems are caused by the blade. For example, I was told there was a problem with the engine one time. And I was told there was too much oil another time. The mower clearly does not "mulch" as good as it did in the past; however, I believe this is likely caused by the problems with the engine over the past year. The mower simply doesn't have as much power as it did in the past and the mower's engine is not consistent the way it was in the past. Do you think the blade could be the reason why this mower does not mulch as good as it did in the past?
Also, this mower has a problem where lots of "mulch" gets tangled up underneath the mower. It takes almost four hours to mow the yard with this 21" self-propelled gas mower. By the time I'm done, the entire underneath of the mower is clogged up with THICK grass that is difficult to scrape out, even when I use a small garden type of rake to scratch out the thick grass from underneath the mower.
I actually gave up on "mulching," because it seems like the mower no longer has the power to do so for the last year - ever since the "engine" problems started and the mower would overheat. I started shooting the grass out to the side of the mower instead. The mower still suffers from the problem of having LOTS of mulch get stuck in a very thick way underneath the mower. And many times the mower doesn't even have the power to shoot taller grass out the side of the mower. Those were problems that still happened during even the first season. This mower actually ends up having the thick grass shot out the side in a way that causes the plastic device fall off of the mower. I need to clean out the side, and then reattach the device to the mower in order to make it so the mower shoots grass out the side rather than mulches.
Would a "New Blade" actually help with any of these problems?

Don't leave the park plug in. Disconnection of the lead is not sufficient. The plug can still spark even when the lead is not making contact. Best to just remove it. Takes 30 seconds. Saves 10 fingers.

Once a year. I bought my lawnmower back in 2004. It's still on the original. Time to replace it.
