It was kind of a paisley underground thing, but the musicians I hung with all recognized the songs as high quality compositions, and fkn great pop. "Look on Up At the Bottom" is like a fantastic but lost Jefferson Airplane track, delivered with real power by Lynn Carey. Thank you, Ms Hoffs, that was cool.

  • @jackprecip5389

Great collection of films. Incredibly impressed she chose Seconds, which isn't everybody's cup of tea (probably the slowest paced first half hour in cinema history), but a film that in my opinion is the single most depressing film about human nature that I've ever seen (which is quite the compliment), and I've seen thousands. Hoffs still has those beautiful big "cute eyes" of a teenager, now with the blend of mature and dignified features of an attractive 64 year old, and she still looks great. She's so wonderful in these 4 minutes, that I almost feel guilty that I never liked The Bangles.
Also, love the Saul Bass reference. Makes me want to ask Susanna Hoff's for a cup of coffee just to get her opinion on Saul Bass' only directorial effort, Phase 4, because I'm now almost sure Hoffs would have interesting and enlightening things to say about it.

The final scenes of Midnight Cowboy distill the truest meaning of friendship and in doing so transcends all the facades that come to us in drag as self, it is a perfect portrait of the deepest meaning of humanity. It was, is and will remain a Masterpiece of Cinema.

I could watch susanna every second of the day the rest of my life. I know Susanna likes those picks. But her all nighter. Is the only one I could watch a million times it was made in 1987

Susanna, I’m sorry. I wrote you off back in the 80s as fluff, a label’s shill to capture some market share from IRS and the Go-gos. But your recent resurgence in pop culture has demanded that I acknowledge what you and the Bangles accomplished as artists. To and this absolute treat of a video has enlightened me to how well rounded a person you are, how multifaceted, well read, and smart you are. You’re one of those artists that we come to see as someone we’d love to sit down with and talk with for hours about shared interests. All the best to you!

Susanna Hoff's did a better Criterion Picks video than most Directors and Actors. Many of them just ransack the Blu Rays and barley talk about the movies and why they like them.

The John Cassavetes movie I fell in love with (also starring Cassavetes, Peter Falk and Ben Gazzara), was "Husbands." It had (has) that same quality you mentioned, of feeling like the dialog didn't come from a script, and the storyline takes you places unlike anything you'd ever find in a mainstream movie, while managing to touch a deep, emotionally profound place that's probably inside us all. (And "Different Light" is one of my favorite albums of all time.)

Impeccable taste. All great films, but I only just saw "La Piscine" a week ago. As I often do after I watch a film that has affected or impressed me and I've digested it, I check out what critics had to say, and I was disappointed not that everyone may not have appreciated it but seemed to miss some aspects of it. Often dwelled on is the imagery, the opulent lifestyle represented, and the beauty of the wealthy characters. But the internal, shifting dynamics between and feelings of the main characters? Not so much. I immediately felt a parallel between "La Piscine" and "Contempt" while watching, from its superb, beautiful setting, the two men and one woman caught in a precarious dance, the dangerous sports car, and the seeds and evolution of jealous thoughts destroying a relationship.
