I have stood at the rim of what we used to call The Grand Canyon in Leilani some years before this eruption. It was sooo much bigger then and of course completely surrounded by and lined with vegetation and trees. When we stood on the rim of it it was so deep that you'd be looking across and down at tops of trees that were growing up from the bottom. Thanks so much. Keep up the good work.

You have such excellent drone control! ~~ Did we get a glimpse of Scott filming at the canyon? I find myself wondering how that big canyon came to be there. I wonder if it could a collapsed former lava tube? ~~ It looks like the tree is really starting to shed limbs now. Guess since it is dead, it won't remain there forever. ~~ Mahalo for such a cool tour!

I am guessing next eruption will start with a rise in the lava flow around fissure 8 unless new lava vents easily from the steaming vents behind it. that would send new lava in a different direction, maybe in large amounts. we have no idea when that may happen. Makes you wonder what happened to all that Lava and why are the fissures pretty much settled down. What was feeding the main caldra and fissure 8 and where did the lava go? Even if the underground lava tubes collapse where is the pressure going. Scientists cannot even speculate why the activity has all but stopped. They simply have no idea what was feeding the fissures any why all of a sudden all activity has stopped.

The theory is that the magma reservoir in the Central Rift Zone (under Halamaumau Crater and PuUoO Crater) drained down hill toward the Lower East Rift Zone near Leilani Estates. This is very similar to what caused the eruption in Kapoho in 1960.

Thank you for this video update. I hope that those whose houses and property were completely consumed are OK and have a place to call home now. Does the Hawaiian gov't give them property? I wonder how it works when a natural disaster destroys everything you own, including your property, with little to no future prospects of reclaiming the land. Did (or will) the state of Hawaii take control of the area affected by the eruption and floes, and make it all part of Hawai'i Volcanoes Nat'l Park? Curious.

I figure given the size of F8, it may be partially owned by several land owners.
