- Nick Raskulinecz was in the middle of moving his SSL 6000 console from Franklin, Tennessee, to Nashville and the new home of his Rock Falcon Studio when senior editor Ted Drozdowski and the Rig Rundown crew caught up with the much-in-demand producer. The space, just off Music Row, was built in 1968 and has been owned by Roy Orbison and Ronnie Milsap. Since Raskulinecz-who’s produced Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, Rush, Coheed and Cambria, the Deftones, Mastodon, Beartooth, and a host of other seriously rocking bands-moved in, there’s been some ass-kicking going on within its walls. He’d just wrapped back-to-back albums by Korn and Halestorm before our visit.
Everybody geeked out hard on Nick’s extensive collection of absolutely badass vintage and modern amps, guitars that have appeared on many of the albums he’s produced, plus a few of his favorite stomps and go-to microphones. And there were plenty more amps that didn’t make it out of the isolation rooms where they’re stored, along with enough pedals stashed away to fill another Rig Rundown. But take a look at what we did see-and try to keep your skull glued on!

That on/off setting is so underappreciated, yet so many people use it.
“It’s got a lot of headroom and it distorts at a nice low volume”
... what?
Glad I wasn’t the only one to notice.
I think he means you can play with the master volume low and it distorts nicely and you can turn down on the volume knob and it’s clean / has nice headroom
I really don't know why I listen to people talk about instruments.
You beat me to it.
Compared to a cranked 100 watt yeah not as loud.
Holy shit. Close your eyes and tell me, this dude sounds exactly like Jim root when he talks. It's absolutely uncanny I tell you!!
Minor correction on the Marshall - Slash connection. The Silver Jubilee was not used on Appeite for Destruction That was a modded late 60's or early 70's Marshall Super Tremolo 100w (1959T), known as SIR #39. The Jube had not even come out before AfD was recorded. However, after GnR blew up, Slash did use them live on tour basically ever since (he briefly used his various signature Marshalls when they were new). For the the other Guns records and most of his stuff since AfD, it was mostly a modded JCM800 (SIR #34).
@Bob Correct, the Jube wasn't out till after AfD was released, but Slash has used them on tour, on and off, ever since. We DO know that THE AfD amp was a modded 1959T (SIR #39). It was very sought-after by other LA players like George Lynch. Slash didn't want to give it back but was eventually (mistakenly) returned to the gear company, SIR and has since disappeared. They provided a modded JCM800 (SIR #34) when UYI was recorded. Slash still has this amp for recording.
@Bob Hey Bob, you're wrong in whatever language you're speaking. The Rumbo sessions were Jan-Feb 1987 and the album came out in July. The Jube wasn't released until after the album was recorded. Research any credible write up about recording AFD, it's always a mysterious modded Marshall from SIR. The Silver Jubilee has been Slash's primary touring amp almost ever since it came out, later in 1987.
I imagine it'll be all gearheads who read this....Nick talked about running all the heads through his collection of cabinets in a mix 'n' match kind of way. For what it's worth, my favourite cab of all time is a Hiwatt 4x12 with the Fane speakers. If you have a chance to try one - TRY IT. If you see one for sale - BUY IT!
That’s guitar amp heaven right there. Add a dumble a few fenders and you’d have it all pretty much
This made me laugh out loud, literally. If it's not old or retro hip the interviewer obviously doesn't care what it is. Looking at the Bogner like its some new fangled contraption even though its a design thats over 25 years old.
You need to do a video about HiWatt amps.
I may be wrong but he said 2000 was abt 18 or 19 years ago, was this shot awhile back?
Hey that's the guy from Sound City
I’m a 5150, Mesa triple rectifier kind of guy myself...
Cool amps! I have a bunch of solid state amps!!! Lol
Never mind the amps that sg 👍
You guys can come do my amp collection lol... there are 40-something, pre-1964 Gibson, Fender, Marshall and such here in Bugtustle :-).. 30-some pre-64 guitars too.
Close your eyes.... kinda sounds like Jim Root talking
OK, I can't really make up my mind... so please send me the Orange and either of the Laney amps :-p Thank you!
Awesome, I own a bunch of Universal Audio Amps... At least UA Unison plugins match the impedance of these real deal amps.
Interesting commentary.
I have found that a guitarists distinctive tone on electric guitar is about 90% from the fingers, plucking and technique. 5% comes from the guitar pick-ups and About 4% is from the pre-amp section of the amplifier. The remaining 1% is all the other factors including the strings and whether you’re drunk or not
Depends how drunk you are haha
That old guy wasn’t really interested in the deizel and the bogner lol
STILL like the Bogner BEST!
Wide-range of sOuNdZzZzZ!!!!
I think this is not a 63 ac30. Unless he changed the cab and both speakers. Or put the chassis on a 70 cabinet.
Agreed; that logo was an immediate tip off.
No need Social distancing . Reopening ?
He produced foo fighters albums. With what? A fisher's price Mikrofon.
He did a great job ruining evanescences new album!!
The man who made the final Rush album nearly unlistenable from a production standpoint. This guy is awful.
I don’t appreciate what this guy did to RUSH. Just my opinion.
the production on Clockwork Angels definitely left something to be desired, great songs though and overall an outstanding album.
David I’ll go back to snakes and arrows with that. As. You said, great songs and great album, but the audio left something to be desired for me.
he's a producer, not a mix engineer so you may be thinking of Richard Chycki
