Why has there been no producer with the courage to create something truly ancient, unique, and significant on the silver screen? I would love to watch a movie about the great Assyrian king Ashurbanipal (mid-late 7th century BCE) or about the equally brilliant Achaemenid-Persian king Darius I (mid-6th century BCE), but there appears to be none - not even anything else related to their era... On the other hand, I found a record regarding a movie from late antiquity, namely "The Epic of Gilgamesh" (Sumerian), that was produced years ago, but I have so far been unable to locate any place where I might purchase it In fact, I would greatly appreciate if anyone were poised to provide me with any information thereabouts. Cheers!

Agora! One of the best movies ever! So happy that you put it there. Regarding Gladiator, it’s true it has some inaccuracies but I would forgive them for one reason: at the same time it’s inaccurate, it’s also magnificently accurate! Why? Because it brings something that we don’t learn in schools: the power of the generals. It’s really well depected how the generals might be more powerful than the emperors.

I know it didn't do too well or get great reviews, but I loved 300: Rise of an Empire. I always watch it whenever I catch it.

It wasn't nearly as good as 300 but it's not a bad film to watch once every couple of years or so

I agree it had its faults but it wasn’t a bad film still an entertaining watch.

Rome should have had more battlescenes ?
Spartacus became a little to long ?
Perhaps the new Shogun series will be best ?
I feel the best tv-series is missing from this list ?

Lew Wallace wrote Ben Hur after being fired from the Union Army after the Battle of Shiloh. Having nothing else to do he wrote Ben Hur. Troy did not follow The Iliad well enough. The key has always been the actions of the gods.

Saw Alexander yesterday. Disappointed. It should be called: Alexander the great sexual adventurer. More accurate with what the movie depicts more. Waste of 3,5 hours

"Troy" pretty and crappy. yuck. Read the "illyad. So much more gripping. Only thing worse was "Gladiator".

The Elyad was not the hisotrical documentation of the Trojan War. According to the website Luwian Studies, the Elyad became the most popular "source" of the Trojan War in the 12th century AD.
