- Demonstration and discussion of the physical examination of the unconscious patient by Peter T. Skaff, M.D., Neurologist with the Mercy Neurological Institute of Greater Sacramento
Amazing video! Very methodical and easy to understand, very informative.
As a new provider in neurocritical care I am so greatful for this video!!
Very nice, thank you for the refresher. It's nice to have some confirmation that I actually am being pretty thorough with my coma assessments.
great video. very great in summarizing a neuro exam. exceptionally helpful.
This is excellent, thank you. I had some trouble with the volume being low. This could be adjusted.
Me too; I can't hear it at all. Volume is on in each place. Hmmm.
This is a great video, thank you.
Thank you very much. This is a really great video.
This was everything I needed 😭😭😭💯💯…..thank you. Video was very informative sir.
Thank you very much ,Dr.Peter.
Why is Borat examining this pt?!
Thank you for this great video. Good job!
He's right you can do a exam when you have a unconscious patient....how ever waking up to fined Frank Zappa is your doctor is enough to do it anyway.
Very nicely done. Thank you very much.
thanks for the explanations, that was helpful!
Wonderful explanation ! thank you for posting !
When the doctor/nurse opens your eyes to check and stuff can you see?
Injecting Saline in the tube? Wouldn''t that risk an aspiration pneumonia? Thank you for the wonderful information
Actually, a corneal reflex is elicited by touching the cornea, not conjunctiva. The cornea overlies the iris.
respect the nurse for being able to mimic the babinski reflex. that must be pretty challeging :)
Well with the assistant being a nurse she more than likely has encouraged that breathing pattern many times.
it's helpful for diagnosis : Coma is a symptom.. a cause must be found.. Without knowing the cause, we cannot treat. Little details orientate doctors.. example.. calm comas orientates toward a drug induced coma .. agitated comas orientate towards a hypoglycemic or a CO intoxication.. If there are asymetries in the motor response we can expect something organic (and not metabolic).. Example, Intra cerabral hematoma, or a tumor..
IT's also helpful for prognosis..
this guy is a gun at reflexes!
Thank your for this great video 👍👍
Excellent explanation, thank you
I may be wrong but I think this is a conscious person (hence the amazing demonstration of the various reflexive responses). My reasoning is her eyes don't lag in the doll's eye test, and she isn't incubated (so her brain stem seems functional). Also not sure how many coma patients have shaved legs (it's possible but a little unexpected... prior laser hair removal is possible too)
Incubated...lol
+Sharon Mitchell Duh...everybody watching this knows that the woman is clearly a nurse helping the doctor with the recording. She even follow every doctor's 'instructions to demonstrate each type of reflex responses. The real question is: Were you conscious when watching this?
That was funny
Sharon mitchell this is only a role play the dr explained to the viewers how to do neurological exam.
GREAT Video!!
Very educational. The video's sound was only audible on the left. Also, they physician should have been wearing gloves!
Why?
Why should he have been wearing gloves? This is only indicated if contact with blood/bodily fluids is anticipated. Otherwise, simple hand hygiene will suffice.
+ThatGunnerGuy MD
I stand corrected. :)
Thyroid Storm jeez dude. All he said was he should be wearing gloves. Even I thought he should have been wearing gloves. Just seemed like he should.
Tremendo. Excelente. Gracias...
very very good video . .thanks
Great teaching points!!!
Thank you Dr Skaff :)

Thank you so much!
Thank you.
Great video thank you!
I remember the mnemonics COWS for caloric test which stands for "cold opposite, warm same".
What is the best treatment for pt who had cardiac arrest due to hypoxia and now is unconscious at the hospital?
The pt does not respond to touch, eyes are glassy. He just moves his toes.
thanks! very helpful!
I would be happy if someone explains me the difference between nystagmus and bobbing, because I know that vertical nystagmus exist or is it that vertical nystagmus and bobbing are the same thing?

Nice video! Thanks :)
I was going to explain the reason for his sure and solid moves but then I read your comment history :D
My nephew nearly drowned in a pool last weekend he was submerged in water for 4 mins and was resuscitate by paramedics. Now he remains in a coma state but he eyes remain open eyes rolled upwards in a fixed state. He is responsive if u tell him to lift his arms. Doctors rated him 7-8 Glasgow coma scale. Will he be able to recover?
Hi!!! Unfortunatelly, I can't answer that. But I was wondering, is he better now?
@@MrKiraBR No, unfortunately he has past but thank you for your reply
@@bcxii9684 That's sad =[

The more you know...
I'm sorry but this title of the video threw me off. Had no idea it was possible to perform neuro exam while pt is in a coma which pretty much answers that question and not sure what the point of progressing the exam is and unsure how thats going to help or prove useful at some point...
1st mic quiet as fuck
2nd mic my ears are murdered
Okay, so while he's making all this money doing what he loves, you just sit in your little corner and cry.
