I share your enthusiasm for a sailing film honouring one of not only our heroes but a world sailing icon - Peter Blake. Of course Sir Robert Knox Johnston as well - is welcome. Just a few months to the Ocean race starts up. They ride the waves of these giants, pioneers and legends of ocean racing
This is amazing. Thank you for sharing it. I had read Cam Lewis's book about *Commodore Explorer* setting the previous record, which had a focus on the French team, so it's cool to have this focus on the British/NZ team as a perspective flip.
this is fantastic! a real bit of history between the classic and modern. hove to by cape horn! dragging anchor chain to survive to the finish! love it!
@@blackbirdxx4613 There were 8 men with guns. They boarded, he went below, grabbed his gun and shot one of them. They then shot and killed him. These were a well known Gang. They had done this for years. They had never shot anyone it the process. However if you come up shooting they will shoot back and there were many of them. Always better to just let them take stuff. Peter was an amazing seaman. What a shame. When I was sailing the Pacific side of Panama, we had friend that were anchored off of a notorious prisoner island. It was a beautiful area. This couple anchored there, they were boarded. He went down and got his gun but they got it away and killed him. Now there were 3 men escaped from a prision island with a boat and a woman. They told the woman to take them near shore. She did, they took her dingy, said sorry about your husband, and left. Never touched her. They just wanted to escape. Often the case in the third world. Killing is usually not there goal, personal gain is. The Island was a real hell hole, they finally closed it and made it a National Park.
I met Sir Peter Blake on his last voyage. He “popped in” to the British Antarctic Survey base I was working at, Rothera, and I was invited onboard. I’m a kiwi, it was a great honour and I will never forget it
My sister and her husband went to San Diego for the Americas Cup challenge in 1995. She said ENZA was there and got into trouble with the Harbour Police quite often, because, even with a bare mast, it was exceeding the harbour speed limit.

Literally feels like back in high school when the sub-teacher would roll out the portable TV and put on some random video that you would end up getting into..... nice
The most incredible part is at 2.00 : robin knox sailed around the world solo in a 32 foot ketch! back in 1969.... Like to see some brave soul try that today with the same equipment he had... any takers ?
@@SmartinMrT Ill check this out. Incredible. admirable too. Ive been to the southern ocean, Ive seen some rough stuff but to do that solo ... it is really a different level.
@@celticbedou Read Bernard Moitessier's book and there's a GREAT one called 'A Voyage for Madmen' - highly recommend both and SHOCKED you don't know them already! Surely you know about Donald Crowhurst ??
You're joking, right?:) If not, then here goes: This is a 30 year old production and I'd venture a guess that you're old enought to remember that widescreen is a fairly new concept when it comes to TV. 4:3 format was the standard pretty much from the 1940-50s to the early 2000s. This uploader transfered it from a video tape AND he showed some respect to the original creators by not cropping it to "wide screen" format which would have meant losing the top and bottom of the original footage.
That is almost 30 years ago! How does this compare to today? Best thing is, cats are more stable upside down, than while sailing. Question; how many days do ocean going foiling vessels need? Has 74 days been shredded to only 37 days, yet? And why aren't sails getting supersonic?! The moped kids (people who love burning their own carbon footprint) have joined the airforce and they do almost 3000 miles an hour, don't they? When is wind power gonna get out of the diapers fase? Can't we take the jet streams to sea level? That might help a bit, maybe aim at sailing 500 knots, first?
I was lucky to do a little bit of sailing back in those days. There was a spirit of the unknown which gave a wonderful sense of adventure that has been somewhat overtaken by technology. They were wonderful days.
Thanks for this mate, exactly what I was looking for. Peter Blake was always one of my heroes (I'm a New Zealander)
It's amazing what you find on old VHS tapes when you're having a clear out...lol. Glad it was of interest to you.

Blake was shot and killed by pirates while monitoring environment change on the Amazon River on 5 December 2001. He was 53 years old.... LEGEND!
