"I actually don't like the abundance of options in KH2" I don't care what your opinion of KH2 is but it's really hard to take anything seriously when one of your criticisms is "It has too many options" in a single player action game that's already relatively simple control wise.

"Too many options" is a completely valid subjective criticism of a subjective design decision. Especially considering KH1 was not nearly as combat focused as KH2. I agree in this instance, though, that KH2's increased focus on combat justified the increased combat control complexity.

@@TheFloodFourm It depends really. Like you said it can be pretty subjective but I can't think of many games where having too many options has worked to it's detriment but i'm pretty good at ignoring the things that I don't feel like using when it comes to these things so maybe that's my own viewpoint talking.

I think the biggest problem in this community (not just the KH community obviously) is that a lot of people struggle to differentiate criticism from personal attacks. On the subreddit if I go into a discussion making a criticism on KH3, something to the degree of like "I didn't personally like this change, I wish it was more like this" it suddenly becomes an unpopular take, and people tell me that I'm just wrong or that I shouldn't bother playing then. I get the impression I just don't belong in the conversation and it's a little disheartening.
I wish those people could understand that criticism is not inherently a bad thing. Fans can criticize something they are a /fan/ of, not because they are intending to bring others down, but because they want the thing to be the best possible version of itself. That's why these communities exist, so that we can all have polite, adult conversations with differing perspectives and learn from each other. That's too much to ask, apparently.

It's not just a KH problem unfortunately. It affects all games. When it comes to criticism people just cannot distinguish personal preference to actual facts: if a game has evident flaws it's only natural for a fan to expose those flaws and ask the developers to fix those said issues. But apparently for some people that's too much, you're just biased and the game is fine as it is. Then you try to ask them why they think the game is fine as it is and their statement is always 100% BIASED, with little knowledge of what they are talking about.
That's why you see situations like these happen: you're still dealing with socials, where everyone has the freedom to say whatever they want without any (apparent) consequence.

Oh they can tell the difference, but their emotions can't, and when they happens they literally become possessed by them. That's part of how the human mind works (or at least the male mind. Female minds is slightly different but produces that same sickening feeling of talking to a brick wall and not being part of a dialogue.)
I guarantee you've done this -- I know I have -- And it can take some brutal self reflection to even admit that much. Everyone has things they're touchie about that, one stimulated, completely demolishes any pretense you may have of being a reasonable human being. You're very rarely aware of it while it's happening.
You can talk about reason, and how to argue, and decency, until all is blue -- but that's not happening. This is hard-coded into you and it has a mind of it's own.
People act like it's an issue with a type of person or a community, but really it's all of us. And the reason it happens is that none of us can admit it: none of us can look at a comment like this one and recognize that that same defensiveness is in ourselves. We scoff at it and rule it over the offending person and so doom ourselves to suffer the same fate at another time.

I think the crux of the "you're a speedrunner" argument is more so that, while there's obviously a great amount of valuable input, they shouldn't necessarily be the be-all, end-all in the minds of game developers. Completely different game, but Girl's Frontline has had events actually designed by the top 1% of the players or something, and they're not really clearable by people other than that top 1%. Which in my experience is some of what the argument comes from.
As much as I love, as an example, Lingering Will, not every boss should be designed like him. But I don't think that's what speedrunners say either, but a lot of people on both ends misconstrue each other

I like the point BB made at the end about KH2FM's small-box room world design, not minding it, and still loving the game. How flaws are immutable, and the actual preferences is how much you care about each of those flaws. KH3 is my personal favorite in the series, but nothing he talked about here is wrong. There's little bits of RNG thrown around (aside the formchanges if you equip the related ability), pre-patch combat was super floaty to the point of sometimes making you vulnerable for actually landing a hit in some scenarios, and there's some stuff to be said about some of the world's designs (Frozen, in particular). Those things don't go away cause I think this one's my favorite, it just means those aren't dealbreakers for me. I actually really like the deconstruction of these things, even if it does highlight flaws, cause it's fun to learn how the world works.

One thing about the form changes, given that a “normal” KH experience was the mash X strategy, perhaps the reason why many form changes in KH3 just change X combos is because the devs knew that X combos are what a lot of players use in the majority of encounters. This is especially likely given the amount of reviews over the years criticizing KH games as the “mash X to win” games.

YOU CAN'T JUST CRITICIZE OTHER GAMES BECAUSE YOU LIKE 2FM.
I think some people have developed an anti-2FM complex.
I love that genuinely good game design is not allowed because of the vague notion of franchise "evolution", an argument I grow more and more tired of by the day.
Some concepts are universally good in games, like proper enemy stagger, one of the reasons Halo 3 has the most balanced Legendary campaign is because Brutes have proper stagger if enough damage is dealt, in 2FM not everything has stagger but I feel so much stuff does have proper stagger that this little mechanic alone makes 2FM the best in the series combat wise.
Stagger is a universal video game concept and benefits practically any game that actually has it implemented well.

I own a copy of Birth By Sleep (and strategy guide) and I don't even own a PSP. I borrowed my friend's PSP just to play it back in the day. I've played even from games like re:Coded to the mobile Gatcha Game. I still find myself coming back to KH2FM. It just hit everything right. I also hear the same thing being a Melee player too. "You just want a Melee 2.0 and all you do is complain and act like you're oppressed" when I have played every smash game including the 3ds AND WiiU smash 4. I still prefer Melee because it really just hit that perfect sweet spot of tight controls and flow. We aren't forcing everyone to LOVE it, we just want a modern smash game to at least give us the same options they did before instead of taking them away in favor of outright removing. That or literally give us Melee 2.0, we are sick of playing on CRTs...

Completely unrelated to the video topic, but I’m surprised Melee players still want more Melee-like gameplay, since I doubt that’ll ever happen. Not because Melee doesn’t deserve it but the Smash game design has been like Brawl SINCE Brawl. I think at this point the designers have shown they don’t want to make a game like Melee, and whilst that’s a shame, I think it is unfair for people to malign the designers for making a somewhat fundamentally different game.

If you want a challenge that forces you to learn the game, that's what the higher difficulties are for.
Granted, the game doesn't do a good job of explaining its mechanics, that much is a fact.
Anyways, my point is that it is their fault. They, ultimately, were the ones that made the choice to avoid magic. The game gave them the options, they just decided to ignore them. Nothing wrong with that, since they made it through regardless, but the game doesn't handhold your learning process. You're meant to take that into your own hands. Whether you like that or not, is of course preferance. It is simply how the games were made.
Besides, this isn't a problem limited only to KH. Lots of games deal with this sort of thing.

@@robertwindshade7629 that's exactly why I despise game reviewers that say KH2 is a button masher when they only played on standard. You can't review the game's combat if you haven't played the game on the difficulty designed to enjoy the combat.
But my point is that those reviewers, for example, are way more responsible for their actions than the casual player, because they have a job to do. Yes, the game gives you all the options. Yes, it's on you to learn what options suit each situation (outside of critical when you're forced to think). But it's not entirely your fault for thinking physical combos are always the best option when 1) they are, in fact, the best option in some cases; 2) they remain a viable option for the entirety of the game; and 3) they are so fun to do (Finishing Leap anyone?). Yes, the casual players COULD explore all the game's mechanics by themselves, but it's not ENTIRELY their fault for not doing so, because the game does a bad job explaining said options and influencing the player to explore them. There's a lot of middle ground between "okay you got magic, go!" and plaguing the game with useless tutorials. I think Egoraptor's Sequelitis on Megaman/Megaman X is a good example of this.
I'm not saying easy mode being easy is wrong, I'm saying it's understandable why so many players think that way. I don't agree with them, I think they're wrong, and I think they are the ones with a less earned opinion about KH combat, not "the speedrunners". But not everyone is forced to explore all the game's mechanics umprompted, and KH2 unfortunately forgot to take that into consideration.

I prefer games that are a bit easier, that are about the experience. He prefers games where a beginner never stands a chance of beating a pro. I play a lot of different games, he only plays a couple of his favorites. We used to get into pretty heated arguments, about what play style was better. Until one day, it just clicked with me... we both simply want different things out our gaming experiences, and so we're never going to agree, and we don't have to. It's a bit of a bummer that we each don't like playing the other's favorite games, but we don't argue anymore.

Maybe it’s Yasue lol or another SQ Enix rep. Game companies’ marketing teams do actively engage with comment sections to try and unify the perception of a product. In KH3’s case, I noticed a lot of buzzphrases getting thrown around during the backlash. To me, recurring remarks like “over-expectations” and “move on” started to sound almost coordinated. It wouldn’t surprise me if SQ had directed their team (battalion) of social media influencers to dismiss all KH3 criticism as “fan over expectations” as a way of damage-controlling the situation. Many of the criticisms toward KH3 I saw were specific, well-written and some were almost unanimous (lack of original worlds, for example).
The reason I feel the discourse devolved into attacking KH2 is that it’s easier to knock down KH2 for its flaws (a game made in 2005) than to elevate KH3 (2019) on its own merits. KH3 does have plenty of merits, but I think people tend to overlook a critical point when they claim KH3 is a masterful evolution of KH2: KH3 was made by a more inexperienced team than KH2. This was the Osaka team’s first major console attempt, and no doubt even Nomura was concerned about their preparedness for such a massive project. I know we all love and respect the dev team, but it’s not an attack on them to say that KH3 does reflect their inexperience with consoles. On top of that, they faced a lot of development issues that would have been difficult for even the Tokyo team to overcome.
For example, KH3 ran into disc space problems so severe that the team needed to turn cutscenes into FMVs at the last minute. When you look at the actual size of the world maps in the out-of-bounds vids (especially Olympus, Arendelle and Corona), the proportion of playable/non-playable area, to me, indicates mismanagement of the disc space. The playable areas cover like 1/10 of the entire map. So all that extra space is for...background? This is a massive waste of space. Compare this to FFVIIR, which makes frequent use of 2D backgrounds to save space so that the game can focus on more important things like its dungeons and boss sequences.
These are the kinds of things that suggest the difference in expertise between the two teams, and again I don’t mean that as an attack on the Osaka team. I know they tried their best, and KH3 is a massive improvement over DDD. So they deserve all the credit for that. The problem is-that just wasn’t good enough for a game as anticipated “KH3.” With the benefit of hindsight (and FFVIIR), SQ clearly did not care very much about KH3. And imo we certainly shouldn’t let Nomura off the hook, either. Ignoring his minimalist script-writing (which I’m sure was affected by the dwindling disc space by the time the Disney worlds were done), it felt apparent to me on my first playthrough that he took a backseat in directing KH3 to focus on VIIR. KH3 does not feel like a Tetsuya Nomura game-his trademark cinematic aesthetic (which FFVIIR is jam-packed with) is virtually absent. Do we really think that Nomura imagined the Keyblade War as a labyrinth resembling the Cloister Trials from FFX? I do appreciate that he ensured the game would not use Command Deck and that all the Org13 members would be fightable, but the main story scenarios in KH3 should have been so much grander than they were.
In the end, I think we can be grateful that KH3 turned out as good as it did while also feeling frustrated and even betrayed that Square-Enix gave this game such a half-hearted effort when fans had supported the series for almost 20 years with no new major console release for 13. I respect the Osaka team a lot, and I think they absolutely tried to do everything they could with what they had to work with. But I think Nomura himself may have lost interest in KH3 once FFVIIR came along. I personally believe he really let his longtime fans down, but I also respect anyone who feels otherwise.
    Keep up the great content!

49:07 I have an issue with your statement that there was no tech behind the Break Away mechanic in DMC5, and that the decision to not allow players to cycle between Devil Breakers freely was a poor one.
For those reading, this is a long comment talking about a mechanic in Devil May Cry 5 and nothing about KH3 (btw I agree with most of Bizkitz' criticisms about base KH3).
Part 1/5 (Rationale behind the Devil Breaker queue)
Now despite what I'm about to say, I as a player would much *prefer* the ability to freely switch between Devil Breakers. However, I do not think it is a *flaw* because it matches the game's intended design. The devs have explained that they initially wanted to let players switch between Breakers, but ultimately believed this would discourage players from experimenting with Break Age (a Devil Breaker's powerful charged attack with the cost of spending the Breaker). The thought was that players are naturally inclined to avoid spending a finite resource if they can help it, and being able to utilize each of your three (eight when fully upgraded) Breakers at any time is for most players, I'd imagine, a more attractive option than having to spend one Breaker with either Break Age or Break Away in order to use the next. Consequently, players might very rarely use the Break Age mechanic at all.
To reiterate, I would still very much prefer free switching because I think I'd still be willing to spend some Breakers with Break Age for big attacks, but I can understand why the final decision to restrict the order was made. It makes a more natural learning curve for first playthroughs as players experiment with the different Break Ages and see how they can implement them into combat. It is not what I'd *prefer* , but I do not believe it is a *flaw* when you take into account the game's design philosophy.
Part 2/5 ("There was no Break Away depth; there was no hidden tech that made up for not being able to switch Devil Breakers")
    This I highly disagree with.
From a mechanical standpoint, Break Away initially might seem like spending a Breaker for only the small reward of a tiny AoE explosion around Nero, but there's more to it than that. If you don't have enough Devil Trigger meter (or don't want to spend it), you can use Break Away to escape grapple moves from bosses or certain normal enemies (this is tutorialized as well), or (from what I've seen of combo videos) cancel the animation of certain moves and affect your midair momentum, which is in line with DMC's combat design of utilizing all of your moves' special properties to put your character in optimal positioning for combat efficiency and style. It was also faster than charging your Breaker and unleashing Break Age, which depending your current equipped Breaker, might not always be what you want.
From a design standpoint, Break Away adds decision making for the player.
    - "Is it worth spending my Breaker and disrupting my planned Breaker order in return for escaping this grapple?"
    - "I see that my next Breaker is a better fit for my current situation. Do I spend several seconds charging my current Breaker for Break Age at the risk of losing it if I take damage? Or do I go for the faster option Break Away so in return for losing one of my Breaker slots, I now have my next Breaker equipped which is better for my current situation?"
    - "Which resource should I spend in order to achieve the animation cancel that I want while performing this cool combo? Devil Trigger or my Devil Breaker?"
Part 3/5 (Why I think this works for DMC5)
DMC5 is structured around linear missions that function like a gauntlet of arena fights with light platforming and exploration in between. Encounters will be the same each time you play the same mission, so you know what's coming and can strategize your Breaker order at mission start. And in the middle of the mission, if you reach a Divinity Statue or Nico's van, you can replenish your Breakers or edit your order to accommodate the upcoming string of fights, or if you want to try something different.
    Part 4/5 (The Pasta Breaker)
The Pasta Breaker is a Devil Breaker where, every time you fire it, your next Breaker in line will move to the back of the "queue", giving the player limited mid-fight control of their Devil Breaker order at the cost of taking up a Devil Breaker spot with a Breaker that's ineffective on its own. I almost never see anyone using this Breaker though.
I didn't really mean to write this part as support or a concession of my argument. Just wanted to include it for information's sake.
Part 5/5 (But what about mods?)
There is a mod (whether finished or in development idk) for PC players to freely switch Breakers so they can have the best of both worlds, but I'm assuming we want to keep the conversation about the games as released in their original form. Still felt I should mention it though.
Sorry to make you read yet another long comment, and your recent KH Talks have been a nice watch for discussion. Thanks!

Thanks!

I know there's a full-course bonus that extends the timers of already available situation commands whenever you fill the situation command bars. While that could theoretically give some control over when you want to use situation commands, getting that full course bonus is still up to RNG itself. So you gotta roll RNG to get slightly more controllable RNG...
My only grip with situation commands is that, aside from formchanges, it's too random.

People really confuse me with how angry they get at even the suggestion that something in KH3 might have been better if it were done a different way.
This is strange because I think that perception of KH3 has generally improved a lot as time's gone on too.
It feels like people are speaking to the question of whether there even *is* such a thing as good when talking about games. If there isn't, then everything is a preference, and what they're saying does make sense... but one, I don't think very many people actually believe that, and two it's also just not a productive or fun perspective. It kinda just shuts down conversation, and undercuts the whole idea of people trying to make good craft. Like, no one is saying that you can't enjoy "bad" games, but if people are making a case for something being bad, and they aren't being shitty about it, why get your knickers in a twist?

uhh, haven't read this yet, but holy crap. Dude shoulda just made a tumblr page at that point if he wanted an entire essay. At least then he could include links and other media.
EDIT: alright I finished it. For such a long comment it wasn't too productive. Was cool seeing the ultimania translations.
hate to bring up this point, but for KH3 the "floatiness" isn't THAT bad tbf. The thing about floatiness that makes it a problem is that it generally puts you in a place where you have few/no options for an extended amount of time for a disproportionate amount of time to the action committed. But for KH3 sora that's not really a huge issue. he can (finally!) guard in midair, he has massive air dashes, most of his magic doesn't have the huge lag in air and he can move while casting. The only major commitment to make is when you want to do that air to ground finisher, trigger a link (IIRC), or use some certain form change attacks.
Frankly, KH3 is the first time Sora lived up to his name.

I'm not disparaging this person per se, since everybody gets like this in some fashion or another. I know I must do it constantly. But by god is it a thing to witness.
People may manage to weave cocoons of rationality around these things to explain how they're doing this out of righteousness and not because they're hurting, but it's all too obvious that this stems from a place of resentment. Maybe not towards Bizkitz specifically -- some transference may be at play -- but from something.

As someone who plays Monster Hunter World Iceborne, I couldn’t agree more. There are a couple weapons with silky combos (Longsword and Dual Blades come to mind) but a lot of the weapons are balanced around being slow and weighty. Monsters don’t stagger (outside of stagger thresholds but that’s speedrunning tech), but have long windups and laggyness, so the combos feel good anyways.

Personally I love kh3, its my favorite game in the series (yes I've played every game on the hardest setting) (ps. I've never been a physical spammer in the kh games. I use everything that the game gives me. And also spamming magic)
But bloody does make very good points.
The only people I do not respect are the ones who have ACTUALLY attacked me because I like kh3. Like... Actual attacks not "kh3 has flaws" but like calling me not a true fan of kh because I like kh3 and other things.
    Bloody is good though.

The only thing I agree with from the commenter is that you can easily mash X your way through KH2 on any difficulty (except level 1 crit). But while I agree with that, that is a flaw present in almost every KH game. From a casual standpoint, the games never give you an reason to try and experiment with the tools given to you because every fight will end by pressing X until things are dead, which is something I’ve been hoping the series would address with each new iteration.

I have played most of the games other then kh3 and so far I love them all but they all have there problems, it took me going thru kh2 three times before I really loved the combat in it, before that I just mashed X and face smashed my why thru the games. I then went and replayed the first game and in the same way enjoyed it a lot more then I did before. But I'm weird I just love the gummy missions in both 1 and 2 and I use to just make ships and fly from planet to planet for fun, 2 made it even better with having harder modes for me to do

I don't understand the common argument nowadays that new players need to be catered to so gameplay options need to be spoon fed to the player or options need to be restrictive so they can learn what's best.
The issue I have is once a dev makes that choice every player new and old has lost their freedom to experiment and come up with their own strategies/builds.
Players whether casual or hardcore should choose their options themselves and if new players can't handle that then they quite literally have other difficulty options made for them.

  • @abcrasshadow9341

Ugh UA-cam comments. They can be a b*tsh sometimes. Also this seems to be a common thing on the internet since the conversation is so one sided and there are no repercussions to saying negatively charged sentence where in the real world saying negative things has the immediate response that is fitting for said comment.
Honestly this guy talked about in the video is probably an upstanding dude but his arguments are just so contrived, convoluted and flat out wrong (could have done a tiny smidge of research to present a better argument or no argument at all).
This is the part where people who disagree will attack my comment:
I guess all the people who have their things in order have done their research and justly so don't make an argument for the same reason this guy does cause they see the truth.
    End of that part.
There is also a lot of wrong in his approach to these issues as he makes it a clash of preferences instead of an objective discussion. He clearly has his preference and feels that kh3's surprise features are better than being able to plan your tools accordingly (kh2fm), and the reason for him is the same reason why people never use potions and food in Skyrim "it is my precious resource, and I will save it for a rainy day" them not realizing that everything is like clockwork and you get it back by just following the games instructions (drive gauge recharge during mp recharge, amazing double edge sword btw).
So next time you decide to make an argument on the internet remember that there are actual people behind every account. And please do your research so that you and your argument stand clearer and that you are not being called put for insignificant reasons. Because if you make people uncomfortable with something they will do everything in their might to take apart every mistake so as to justify their opinion just because they didn't like it to get challenged.
Thanks for reading my arguably shorter ted talk.

I agree with the evolution of the series argument as far as it's a tradition. I expect it. Sometimes it's for the better, sometimes not. Sometimes both at the same time for different aspects of any given game. We as fans are allowed to say what we like and don't like, hopefully so that SE takes into consideration. And as another commenter said, some things should just be standard.

I liked this kh talk. Thanks BB for trying to keep your head on while reviewing it. I think he made one good point that you didnt address. That kh3 was probably (I dont know for sure) made to be SUPER UBER user friendly for the noobs that just realized that the kingdom hearts series existed. It was *probably* made to help people fall in love with the game without having to dig deep into menuing and the mechanics of every tool. Also i think this "preference" debate is kinda won within these boundries (that didnt make sense, but i digress). A game is made for FUN and there are mainly 2 ways to do that; screwing around and PROGRESS. When you feel you have bettered yourself by playing. When you have more options and control YOU must improve, not the game, which, in turn, makes it fun. Plus kh isn't exactly one of those mess around silly games, ya it's got disney, but it takes itself too seriously to do that.

    • @megasoniczxx
      @megasoniczxx 3 роки тому +2

Only problem I have with that point is that KH2 was already pretty user friendly. Base game difficulty let's you mash until the cows come home and you never have to explore any of the depth that the game has if you don't want to. The problem is that KH3 has that as the only real way to play it because they've seemingly removed most of the depth and lowered the skill ceiling for people who were never tying to reach it in the first place. That isn't to say that KH3 doesn't have its own set of neat tricks to use but we lost a lot in the transition and I think it hurt the game more than it helped.

at around 25 minutes you were talking about how keyblade transformations (outside of a few examples) don't change your play style, and name-dropped Hyperhammer as your example, which I find wierd, because Hyperhammer is the ONLY Strike Form keyblade that also changes your play style, albeit, it isn't the most engaging thing, what you do in Hyperhammer is use the ability to cut straight to your finisher while on the ground, and spam what is essentially a grand magic, over and over and over and over until mobs of enemies are dead, if you haven't tried that yet, I'd recommend it, as it's entertaining in how poorly designed it is

Okay, for context, I only played KH3 after all the patches came out and with the dlc, but like it really wasn’t all that different from KH2? The cinematic aspects were cool at first but quickly felt like they were getting in the way, but movement/combat felt pretty good, I like air guarding and movement tech that isn’t locked behind grinding drive forms. I dunno. It was fun. I like both very very much, it’s so weird to me all this arguing over them, although I do really see value in fans pointing out flaws to let developers know how to make the game better for their fan base but like, you know, same game, same love, let’s all write essays
