Can we get a video with Grandpa please?! Maybe a photo walk?
I'll have to ask him!
any update?@@linusandhiscamera
Wow, congratulations. My dad gave me his M3, so I share your joy.
oh that’s so awesome! congrats on the rangefinder piece 😂
@@linusandhiscamera you just need a Visoflex.
wow this might be my fav video of yours, love hearing your grandfathers story
thanks matey
I have an M2 and have been using it with that exact same lens for the past 2 years or so and it has been nothing but consistent, reliable, and loyal in all my travels. You will certainly enjoy having the M1 in your collection especially because it is a family heirloom, nothing quite like taking photos on a camera that has been in your family for decades.
A tip: You can buy a Leica adapter to use Leica Screw Mount lenses. A Canon Leica Screw Mount 50 mm/f1.8 so adapted or 50 mm/f2.8 will get you off to a superb start with your wonderful gifted and passed down family Leica classic. Enjoy it for your lifespan! Be blessed you were considered worthy for it to be passed down. You'll cherish this and love this.
great tips!! thank you!!
This is such an amazing story man. Thank you for sharing!
thanks for watching jakey love you!!
You have a wonderful smile
thank you!! 😭
Very lovely video and beautiful story :)
I had a same thing happen to me. Shooting film in Montana, on Going-to-the-Sun Road, like, THE destination for a long time. And the I was so nervous and stoked, I just opened my camera without rewinding. Like maybe a 1-second-realization-close-again type of deal. Only two photos have light leaks and they're still usable. Sometimes film just surprises you.
you should definitely work on a personal project with this setup amazing results such a great gift ❤
This is crazy :3 I love Leica becouse of that cover inside. Meyby it protect some of shot You made :3 So cool to get such a gift from grandpa :3 Wooo really cool ^^ Anyway You look to me like a good fotographer who know how to use hyperfocal style. I own Rollei 35 and Leica IIIa and someday i wish i will buy m1 or M2 ^^
Cheers and merry christmas :3
Another excellent video. And what a foul little wave on my part.
fly in first!
mmm is this a reuploaded video? I remember seeing this story before.
Dope
thanks!!
So kool
"theres not a leak in sigh...." 3:23
😂😂
what a great present from your grandpa! it's quite a wonder the shutter works properly and don't get stuck since it's never been used and more than 60 years old!👍 best Tom
pretty amazing!! so stoked about it.
“Before we…uh, it doesn’t matter” 😄 such a vibe. I love that you just want to get straight to taking the pictures.
Absolutely loved this video.
lmaooo i almost took that part out, didn’t expect to see a comment about it right after dropping the vid. thanks!!
Would love to see more of your Grandpa’s photographs! 💙💙
Will definitely share more!
Cool stuff! My dad gave me his old Leica M2 a number of years ago, that my mom bought for him the year before I was born. Sadly, it was lost, with just about everything else I owned, in a house fire back at the beginning of the year. Replacing most of my Nikon digital gear was straightforward enough, but even if I were to get another M2, it wouldn't be my dad's. 😢
Grandpa is a G.
my goat 🐐🐐🐐
Your grandpa is interesting af
I think those vibes are wonderful. Just moved back to LA, thanks for the location scout, that mountain shot was epic ! Can't afford a leica however ;-)
Try hyperfocal distance focusing. Use the distance scale on the lens and then, rather that worrying about how far you are from the subject, you can give yourself a range of acceptable focus.
On a Voigtlander 35mm 1.4 for example, if I'm at F8, I can set the right F8 marker to infinity and have everything from 8'-infinity in focus. Set it to 6' at F8 and you've got everything from 4.5'-9' in focus--perfect for street photography.
Your lens will also be sharper at F8 than F16 due to diffraction, although people on the internet will tell you that matters more than it does.
dude thank you so much! this is very helpful. looking forward to trying this!
Very cool video Linus! I have the actual Leica M1 you’re showing in your video, the one with the medical attachment. Its the picture of the ad I bought it from.
no way!!! that's so dope!! hope you're enjoying it!
@@linusandhiscamera So cool you’re replying to this! I sure do enjoy it! It feels so solidly built and really inspires with its simplicity. Enjoy yours too! Hope to see it again sometime on your channel 😁
i am still farting.
😂😂😂😂😂
Trade this camera up for a Lecia with a rangefinder patch. You will be happy and nobody will ever know. The new camera will still be your grandfathers Leica with a upgraded focusing patch 😇
solid idea but definitely not going to trade up my grandfathers camera, just going to learn to use it as a new hobby!!
@@linusandhiscameraYeah, no.. you’re doing great with the M1 DO NOT get rid of or trade this camera away. This is coming from an m2 user.
Perfect video on a weekends morning, thanks
In the summer of 1997, I purchased my Leica M6 from the initial profits of my IT consulting firm, which I founded in 1990. It cost 5,500 German Marks back then, along with the Summicron 2/50 lens. Later on, I also acquired the 2/35 (V4) and the 2/90 (Apo/Asph) lenses. On the “Leica Sales Day” on December 2, 2023, in Wetzlar, I will only be offering the 90mm lens for sale. I will continue to use the M6 camera with the 35mm and 50mm Summicron lenses. I’m planning to purchase a used Lumix S5 M1 and 2 Novoflex adapters LET/LEM.
I will never want to sell my M6 and the two classic Summicrons, if it can be avoided."
What a cool grandad and such a great camera to pass onto you. I’ve had loads of Leica Rangefinders and in my opinion the M2 and the M4-P and M4 are the three best models to shoot with. The M6 is stupidly over-priced and marked a slump in build quality anyway. The M7 is pointless. The Three Lug M5 is cool and can take a 28mm without a separate viewfinder. Good luck.
Wow what a present from grand pa....I always wanted one, I borrowed one, I used one at a show, It was like driving a roller for the first time! shame on me I never bought one! such is life! My choice of lenses would be a 35mm, maybe a 50mm and a 85mm.....just dreaming!
Pro tip for anyone zone-focusing and/or using a rangefinder: make sure the infinity stop in your lens is actually accurate, many lenses can focus beyond infinity, this requires calibration (or a simple mark on where the stop should be)
😍
Could have been a 10$ plastic camera, if it's from grandpa it's priceless.
My grandfather died recently but as the only person in this family who shared his appreciation for photography I got his M2, every time I open it I’m afraid to see film, that old loading system is so janky and unreliable
brotha u need new c41 chems those things are giving weird color shifts!! good video tho Man U could always send it off to have a rangefinder installed actually!
I am also shooting with my Grandfather’s Leica. An M3 he bought new in 1957.
Is there a difference between the first and second edition (book)? 2nd is really pricey compared to 1st :0
anyways I’m excited to read it :)
Hi, Linus! Great gift from your Grandpa! Did you made any photos during the day or just in different lighting situations? if yes, will there be another video?
Really curious!
You are so lucky that your grandfather gave you his Leica, take a pict with him and keep it even if you dont post it, enjoy the camera...
As long has it has frame lines it's perfect for street photography. Don't need the rangefinder. You're not going to be shooting any portraits though, lol.
Oh so emotional... I have soldier grandpa. Sorry...
"There's not a leak in sig...." That was hilarious. It was fun to hear the non-polished, behind the scenes chit chat that goes on when making these videos.
thanks dude!! always a little nervous about sharing that side of things hahahah
As a fellow north carolina person I am honored to see this

@@linusandhiscamera THATS MY BROTHER do you have insta?
Your videos lately been 🔥
thank you!!!
Well this is fucking cool!!
appreciate you chris 😎
lmfao, not me thinking this whole "grandpa gifted me his leica" was a satire!
Superbly evocative images.👍📷🏆
Really loving the videos from this Linus 2.0 👏🏽 and also how regular the uploads have now become. Keep em coming 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
next time you send it for cla just get an m rangefinder installed, that'd be so cool
6:29 your tires are turned the wrong way for downhill parking
To be honest, the story is good but your photos not that well. Practice more
so cool, loved the bmw shots
thank you!! so cool it was just posted there.
the "leatherette" on the early M was basically fully plastic and with times it cracks and fall apart, you can replace it pretty easily tho!
Good to know!! Will have to get some new leather for it shortly.
I bought a M3 at a flea market with a rangefinder patch so dim it might as well have been a M1. And the Vulcanite was pre-lost, before I got it! Well done with the zone focusing. And being brave to point that lens into the sun. They all were great.
wait a minute.... aren't you with cinestill?!
Beautiful video and very good gift from your grandfather... You definitely have to invite him to your channel...
I'll see what I can do!
dude these photos are insanely good, do you have a tutorial on how you edit them by any chance ?
they're unedited!
Oh to have a Grandad like yours .. If only.
Your grandpa looks like he's taken some wonderful photos. And you seem to have picked up zone focusing pretty easy! Look forwards to seeing more
Great vid, and really cool connection to share with your Grandfather. Even better that he was able to gift his camera to you personally. All the more special!
I lived in LA for nearly 15 years. After being back on the east coast this year I get a kick out of watching you hit all the spots I used to love to shoot. It’s like little Easter eggs in when I watch!
You’ve been killing the videos lately, awesome work!
This is so amazing man, film photography is in your blood!
haha just a bit! thank you man!
I had a Bessa L once, no viewfinder at all. I paired it with the wonderful Voigtlander 12mm lens with accessory viewfinder. An accessory rangefinder would fit nicely in the hot shoe.
i just ordered a 35mm rangefinder accessory!! now i just need to buy a lens.
I bought my best friends fathers Leica m3. He bought it int Switzerland. I feel honoured to own it. I feel like I’m continuing it’s legacy and taking it all over the world with me. Also my skin on it is brittle as well. I feel like them being so old it’s just a matter of time! Enjoy and hope you make more videos with you and this special camera!
i love that!! keeping it in the friend group
So cool when you get handed down something so special and intimate like that vs. scooping up a deal online!
For me it was my Yashica MAT-124, handed down by my grandmother (although technically it was my grandfather's who passed many years ago - so even more special to me.) ❤️
i love those yashicas. so dope!!
Very nice shots, indeed..
Daaaammnnnn this is dope!!! That first pic of the OG was so fire!
forreal. such a dope self portrait!
Just finished watching Kodachrome, the movie, and now, your video...I stayed away from even looking at Leica cameras, as I know my GAS would make me buy one... but now, seeing what you shot, and your experience, really makes me get a Leica..
congrats! Please consider getting a 24mm or wider lens for this camera. The wider it is, the bigger the zones of focus. Great for street photography/ candids!
thanks for the rec! i was thinking of borrowing a 12mm from a friend 😂
great video miss u
What an amazing gift. Something to cherish. Do yourself a favor and buy a pocket film rangefinder from that era. They let you determine the distance first so you can dial it into the camera distance scale.
I'm looking through a rabbit hole of these devices right now. So cool!
Wonderful story!
We want to meet grandpa!
the rangefinder needs calibration at some point in life the one i was borrowed had a titanium lens how many years without a hint of use BEAUTIFUL! the shutter fires at the perfect time its the quickest intuitive feel
right on!!
Wonderful!! 😊
rad
Cheers Linus! I thought the images came out great. Beautiful camera too! Looking forward to seeing more of what you capture with the M1! Shouting out here from the Triad (Greensboro)🤘📸
NC represent!
This is awesome.
Thanks grampy, now that’s what I call Linus’s Leica
haha
Beautiful!
Love the vibe of this whole video. Subscribed ❤
thank you! welcome to the channel!
These are great images. I always still use my grandfathers Leica iiif. It's nice to have something you can carry with you that grounds you to your own history.
aw beautiful!!
Happy to be here early and show my support! Keep up the videos, theyre always inspiring!
thank you rodrigo!! hope you like the vid
nice video. What I would have liked to see is some sharing of what it’s like to use it…. I think most of my (and others) leica lust comes from not knowing what it’s like to hold one, to look through the finder, move the knobs/focus etc. it would be cool if you could show that
but for next time spare us the car pics. i think it’s a boring trope
Oh no, looks like you've caught the Leica bug 😂
maybe a little bit!
When the personal meets the professional! Another great video - keep 'em coming!
thank you!
📸🔥👏
That's dope! keep that joint in the family bro! Pass that down to your kids!
Seeing the note from your grandparents when you opened the camera definitely had me tearing up. This is beautiful.
Great video and photos. You and your grandpa have a great eye.
I highly recommend picking up a leather half-case for your Leica. (I have the Artisan and Artist LMB-M3 and love it.) It offers protection for the vulcanite, and it helps with gripping the camera.
Looking forward to seeing more of your photos!
Some killer shots. How cool to have a piece of family history.
so so grateful!!
I won't tell Cinestill that you used Portra
😂😂😂
WOW, the M1 Looks so beautiful. The photos are just as beautiful as the camera itself. Yes, the skin will break apart with age; reskin is the only choice to preserve this beauty. Much respect to you and your grandpa....
Nice Video, it's cool to see someone else using a M1. It's quite a rare and also underappreciated camera. Mine doesn't have such a cool history behind it, I just got it from ebay. It was fairly cheap but it needed service and the Vulcanite also chipped away, so I got a replacement leather for it. I don't use it very often, but it's a great tool for street photography and also wide angle shots. Sometimes I thought about selling it, but it's such a beautiful and well made camera so that I want to keep it in the collection.
4:08 loved that edit, great stuff as always.
Dude! leica m1 is actually a little rare. It has a view finder but not range finder so its perfect for zone focusing and wide angle lenses. Very similar to a leica MD , MDa, MD-2 Hope you enjoy!
This was a really fun video! It captures the fun of photography. My favorite photo was the one of the guy riding his bike on the beach.
The photos came out so cool!!! Love this video ❤
M1
what a wonderful gift! loved the images!. I have an M7 and hoping one of my nieces or nephews gets into photography so I can give the M7 another home.
