  • THE SONGBIRD: Martinique-born coloratura soprano Christiane Eda-Pierre (1932 - 2020) was 26 years old when she made her operatic debut in 1958 in Nice, France as Leila in Bizet's "The Pearl Fishers." The following summer in 1959 she appeared for the first time at the Aix-en-Provence Festival as Papagena, becoming a regular artist there across seven seasons. By 1965 she had graduated to the role of the Queen of the Night, whose two demanding arias are shared here. The conductor is Piero Bellugi.
    Eda-Pierre was engaged at leading opera houses and festivals around the world (Lisbon, London, Berlin, Vienna, Salzburg, Chicago, San Francisco, Genève, Brussels, Barcelona, Edinburgh, Milan, Moscow) in the core lyric-coloratura repertoire, including 16 appearances at The Met in the 1980 and 1981 seasons (Konstanze, Antonia, and Gilda).
    But clearly her career was centered in France where she appeared in nearly every city at some point over 30 years: Avignon, Bordeaux, Grenoble, Lille, Limoges, Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier, Nancy, Nice, Orange, Rouen, Strasbourg, Toulouse, and, of course, dozens of times in Paris.

      @@spyserse2219 I prefer Geszty as she has more volume to her voice. Roberta Peters was solid but I prefer her more as Olympia, Fiakermilli, and Zerbinetta.

      @@operaanimelover369 In my opinion, Gesty, Peters, and Serra are all excellent queens. They have similarities in their performance. Of course, Mimi Coertse and B Sokorska cannot be ignored.
      Gesty is similar to Peters, both have a darker tone. The difference is that Peters is lighter like a beautiful and dangerous snake, and Gesty is like a pica flapping its wings.
      Serra sings calmly, but she makes good use of her advantages. An extremely bright, sharp and hard voice, like a steel wire, enables her to create the extraordinary of the Queen of the Night without being too furious.
      Gruberova has a similar and same bright voice and the volume is not small, but her voice is too sweet, because the Queen of the Night is a "queen" in Mozart's repertoire. Although it requires a lot of dramatic power, I don't think it needs to be special. "Big" is particularly "fierce". This is different from the later Puccini Turandot. Otherwise, from Hempel to Koth, Erna Berger to Popp, their Queen of the Night would not be praised.

      There is also a great soprano. I think I should mention her. Her name is Gisela Vivarelli. She is a very wonderful and exquisite performance. Of course, her light voice may make people feel "Dull".

      Wow, that is a lot of favorites! Obviously you love this aria. I agree with many on your list. One favorite of mine is Marilyn Tyler. She sounds truly hysterical with anger, but still musical with a bright, incisive voice -- the tempo is outrageously fast, but she makes it work. ua-cam.com/video/b6k6Ekx5jmA/v-deo.html

    J ai le souvenir d une soprano lyrique a a voix chaude
    Helas ici un 1er air beaucoup ,beaucoup trop long et elle s essoufflé quand au 2 ème air le timbre est sec, les aigus tires, l ' allemand prête à sourire.
    Ce n est vraiment pas un rôle pour elle !!!!

    The first aria is ok, but the second one’s coloraturas are horrible… I think that this role didn’t really suit her voice.

      @@Duncan456 Wash your ears or at least don't think you own the absolute truth. If the role had been perfect for her voice, she would have sung it more often. But pretend that her coloratura is horrible is a comic exageration.

      Although they are not perfect, she very well conveys the rage that this aria asks for, which a lot of clock-perfect nightingales forget in favor of coloratura perfection. Do not forget is a live caption, not a studio recording.
