    A Church must be a foretaste of heaven. It must divorce itself from the outside world and uplift, inspire and awe. It is not a meeting hall, a theater, or a subway station. It is first and foremost the house of God where the table of the Lord is spread before us.

    I actually liked the churches you showed. They are very far from ugly and are in my opinion excellent examples of modern architecture. Thanks for showing, we don't have to agree.

    • @abideinmylove
      @abideinmylove 5 днів тому +2

      I agree that most of the buildings shown are not "ugly," but, except for Le Corbusier's Notre Dame du Haut, they are unsuitable as Catholic ecclesiastical architecture, which makes them nice buildings, but not good architecture in my view.

    • @Diaxminator

      Vatican 2 ruined our Churches with wreckovation and people with opinions like you are the problem. You strip our Church of traditions and beauty, further protestantising and thinning out our faith until nothing is left. The buildings in this video are fine as just buildings, but for Churches, they are objectively horrid and show the satanic infiltration within the highest-ranking clergy.

      @@abideinmyloveI wouldn’t want all Catholic Churches to look like these but taking an architectural chance now and again is a good thing.

      @@rrsafety except maybe not $100M on a Brutalist concrete bunker ala Cardinal Mahoney in Los Angeles, representing an architectural style that was already passé by the 1980's. That is VERY sad because as the largest diocese in the United States, and the richest in the world, that was a terrible missed opportunity. An imperfect, if noble, effort, in my view, is the transformation of Johnson's masterpiece Crystal Cathedral for the Diocese of Orange.

  • @abideinmylove

    I don't blame the architects, although they should have known the the greatness of architecture does not lie in "creativity" or "the wow factor" but in the suitability to purpose. In the case of a Catholic Church (no matter what the smarty pants modernist liturgists may protest) the purpose of our churches is not a mere meeting hall for the faithful as if we don't need our buildings to reflect God's greatness, His beauty, and our love of Him, not to even mention the importance of catechesis and devotion. However, I quarrel with the inclusion of Le Corbusier's Notre Dame du Haut. I think he pulled it off. He designed a modernist church which feels reverent and devotional. Far from ugly, it is transcendent and evocative. Compare that to Cardinal Mahoney's brutalist monstrosity in Los Angeles. Rafael Moneo made the interior palatable and the tapestries added to the walls help a great deal to soften the bleakness of it all and provide some devotional context, but the exterior is not simply ugly. It is an affront to Catholic spirituality. The exterior of St. Peter's in Rome had the same problem, which was corrected by Alexander VI with the addition of the welcoming embrace of Bernini's colonnade with our friends in heaven surrounding us as we approach that formidable façade.

      I blame the Modernist bishops.

    • @abideinmylove
      @abideinmylove 5 днів тому +2

      @@ThomasCarney-r9v yes, they lost their way, and architects, also out of touch with the depths of Catholic faith, didn't help. Consider the San Francisco Cathedral. It is a glorious and uplifting building, and yet the interior has no solid focus as if the space were only about itself and not for the worship of God. It's pretty ironic as they have a traditionalist bishop now. They have been adding chapels which should help.

    The fact that the makers of this film have no education in architecture does not render the churches mentioned in it "ugly".

      The fact that one has a professional education does not infallibly indicate good taste. Neither does wealth.

    • @Brian-gj5xm
      @Brian-gj5xm 5 днів тому

      Are you saying that one needs to be educated in order to know what is beautiful and what is ugly? A child knows better than you. These structures are objectively disordered and non harmonious. They glorify man, not God - who is the author of all creation, of order and harmony. Churches should be a place to raise our hearts and minds to God with the most objectively talented artwork available. Not the modernist subjective garbage that reflects opposition to natural order.

    • @abideinmylove
      @abideinmylove 4 дні тому +1

      I think that the film uses the term "ugly" as a metaphor for dissatisfying, and, except for Notre Dame du Haut, I think they are right. Some of the buildings are quite wonderful in some ways, but they fail as churches for a variety of reasons.

    When I wâs a child, the work of Le Corbusier taught me that sheer unadorned proportion in and of itself could be overwhelmingly beautiful when skillfully isolated. Especially the Dominican priory Le Thoronet. I have loved that building for decades though it took me decades to realise what was going on. The dialogue between the personal and the collective, the large and small, the light and dark, the angular and the sinuous thrown together. I am not swift on the uptake but I finally got to the heart of my impression.

    The Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the king Liverpool is one of the most iconic buildings in the city. The exterior is Portland stone and the interior has the largest amount of glass in the world. It is a fabulous cathedral and if you go inside it you will feel the peace inside this wonderful building. Don’t judge a book by its cover.

  • @drell3813
    @drell3813 4 дні тому

    The Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral was originally supposed to look very different and be the 2nd biggest Catholic cathedral in the world but unfortunately WW2 disrupted the building process and funding was drastically cut, leading to a competition to basically finish the job with the funding they had left.
    If you visit, there are pictures when you enter showing what it would have looked like and the crypt is more like the original design.

    • @davidholmes9756
      @davidholmes9756 3 дні тому

      The Cathedral was heavily in debt after being built.
      I found it, several visits, to be modern and fit for purpose. It feels inviting inside and one of the noticeable things is that you are not far from anything in the building.

    • @drell3813
      @drell3813 3 дні тому

      @davidholmes9756 yeah but when all you can say about a building that expensive is that it's "fit for purpose"... no further explanation needed.
      Honestly I really like the different chapels all around the perimeter, most of them are great.
      I haven't been to a service yet or the crypt as it was closed when I visited but I love in the city now so will probably go again soon.

    Interesting. I found none of these to be ugly. I don’t like the exterior of some, but generally like the interior of most a great deal. In every instance the interior emphasizes or frames the PRIMARY liturgical symbols of Table, Ambo, and Cross. I am left curious about how the forth primary symbol, the Font is treated. I am reminded of the austere beauty of traditional Benedictine worship spaces.

    • @abideinmylove
      @abideinmylove 4 дні тому

      It really is not about "modern" vs. "traditional." Heaven knows there has been a great deal of garbage ecclesiastical architecture in past ages. Only the good stuff tends to get saved over the centuries. Case in point, as long as you brought up the Benedictines, is the glorious chapel of St. John's Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota. images.adsttc.com/media/images/566d/55bc/e58e/cead/7100/00f0/newsletter/SJAC_1.jpg?1450005935

      I've been there. It has it's redeeming features, but, in general, it's pretty awful. I think it can be corrected, but it will take an archbishop with great vision and deep pockets. The humongous Anglican Liverpool Cathedral is, however, in my view, worse. It is wholly oppressive rather than inspiring and uplifting.

      What is your goal? Why not show the many beautiful churches that are being built? There are also towns in Europe that are saddled with ugly heaps of stone that they can't demolish because they are old, and have "historical" value. There are 19th century churches in the USA that tried to be neo-gothic but look more like penitentaries. Good and bad taste walk side by side in human society. Even if you get a billion likes to your trashing-churches video, that could just possibly mean that you found a billion people with equally bad taste as your own, although I am not implying you have bad taste. In that area I remain neutral. But I do judge the negativity of your efforts to be an error. So much effort to inflame disdain!
