This KO is not a surprise. Volkanovski rushed his return, especially against a heavy hitter as Topuria.
It was abif rushed but Ilia has the perfect style and stature to combat volk even a fully recovered volk would have had his hands full

Also, 1st Makhachev fight gave them a false confidence. It was mainly because 24 hours rehydration time advantage (favors smaller fighter) in Australia Perth, some people thought Volk is better than he actually is.

Because of his first loss in a LONG time at his true weight class? That suddenly means his career is over or that he's 'no longer the same fighter'. Topuria is unbeaten, a nightmare for anyone, and Volk is way too active. If he loses again, to lesser competition, then you might have a point.
Start of a better era.. Ilia's fights are close to perfection so they're going to have to work on everything if they want to beat him

@@olly__chapman That's because he returned too early... He shouldn't have taken the Islam rematch at short notice; and he shouldn't have fought Topuria as soon as he did following the KO. He got hit by arguably the heaviest hitter in his division. Are you seriously suggesting only 35 year olds can get knocked out against heavy hitters? 29 year olds just walk right through them? He fought outside his true weight class twice, losing the first by a close decision (which arguably could have gone to him), and the second by a rough KO. He returns prematurely against another heavy hitter who's also an unbeaten no.1 contender and gets caught. It happens. He needs to stop being so active and fighting so soon after taking serious injuries - we've seen plenty of young fighters' careers end early because they did the same thing. That has nothing to do with being 35 and everything to do with not taking adequate rest periods. I'll say it again: unless he gets seriously outpaced and outperformed or starts losing to people who aren't top contenders, then there's absolutely no reason to assume he's over the hill. You're not over the hill just because you happen to lose to arguably the UFC's P4P in a different weight class, and to the no.1 contender who's known for having heavy hands. Maybe he is done - but my point is that's not something you can determine from his recent activity alone (especially considering he never gives himself time to recover between fights and he only ever fights the best of the best). If he did what a lot of champs do (even younger ones) and took no real risks, stayed in his division, fought only once a year and gave himself ample time to rest after a KO, the situation would be very different, because he still beats everyone else in his division... It's only P4P lightweights and Topuria who get the better of him. Alex Pereira is 36 and got KO'd against Izzy. He went on to win LHW title. Should he have retired instead?

Even Makhachev's kick didn't put him out completely. Which means that he was already vulnerable and recovering from that. He should have taken at least a year off (just like Makhachev told him to)

@@aleksandarstepanovic787 Fighting at 36, having recovered from a head kick is much better than fighting at 35 without completely recovering. I think Volk knew that, but the real issue was that Volk couldn't take time off because of his personal issues that he mentioned previously.

I love volk. But wtf was that. Trying to brawl with a better boxer with mediocre head defense not even tried to use his wrestling once. Had no respect for illia hands. I was scared with every illia combo as a volk fan. It was inevitable for volk to not get knocked out in 25 minutes fighting like that.

@ashbison You view it as punishment? If it were a close fight like going the distance & the challenger narrowly winning by decision or The KO happening in the 5th Rd.... The challenger did what he needed to do to become the champ. Clearly. Immediate rematch? No way. A future rematch, that's probably inevitable. If you remove the emotions, you might see it differently. This is nothing against Volk. He was a great champion. As for taking risks? Hence, risky business 😉

There is a clear difference between a strong guy that comes in there with the INTENTION of
finishing a fight, and a strong guy like Costa who HOPES to finish a fight. Topuria is not waiting for the opportunity to happen, he creates it.

No Chechen has ever fought for a UFC title.
And one of the only two Dagestanis who have competed for UFC titles definitely got embarrassed for 5 rds & arguably got beat by a little Featherweight who was only visiting the division.
