You are correct with what you are saying about the initial wolf number recovery goals first stated. Then because of politics the wolf population isn’t managed using science. Thank you for making this video!

U are 100% right on with everything u say. I had commented a few weeks back about my Wisconsin deer gun season, saw one doe and 23 wolf sightings. A pack of six moved into the area early November. There is also a pack of three that are a different color, one all black. They have absolutely no fear of me. They outnumber my trail camera pics 10-1 over deer pics. Love seeing them but they need to be managed as u say. Plenty of bears, they run away. Sad to say that after 53 years hunting norther Wisconsin I now carry a hand gun bow hunting just because of the wolves. Thanks for your videos!!!!

@@markmasa8533 you bet- and that’s such a bummer to hear that. Deer camp traditions have been destroyed over this. Two years ago I actually got stalked on my way in to a deer stand in the dark. Ever since then I’ve always carried a gun w me for self defense.

I have had the same experience in our area of north Wisconsin

Good video. This topic needs to stay at the forefront of conversations. Very frustrating how the “follow the science” people refuse to apply that line of thought with the wolf populations in the upper Midwest. Complete emotional “logic” here. I just purchased a hand gun to carry in the woods while scouting and working on our property. Crazy to think that is required. However when you talk to the people who live close to these wolves everyday you understand the complete lack of fear they now have of humans. Every year the close encounters become more frequent. I believe that simple common sense tells us that at some point this increase will lead to a very unfortunate result for a person. It’s terrible that we can clearly see that result coming, but nothing can be done to prevent it.

@@BrianJacklin-r6k yeah- that really irks me how the same people who shriek “follow the science” won’t do it themselves. Good point. Regarding your hand gun, I actually was stalked on my way into my deer stand two years ago. In the dark. I could see the glowing yellow eyes. I actually don’t know if it was a wolf or a cougar. But ever since that encounter I’ve always carried a gun on me when working on stands for self defense.

Very well said. Wolf recovery goals for WI were in the low hundreds and we have over a thousand. They're established farther south than the Twin Cities. We need state management of these animals. Hoping this mild winter holds out too. Already been seeing more deer sign and less wolf sign after the previous mild winter, so it's helping rebalance things a little bit.

@@katiecrowley3417 yep- I’m staying positive due to the two mild winters in a row (minimal snow). That is one big thing we have going for us. Thanks for sharing.

I heard a talk from a researcher at the Voyageurs Wolf Project about a year ago. He stated they try to put out good scientific data on wolves and stay out of the politics.Their data indicates that the level of wolf harvest needed to significantly increase the deer population on the state level was way higher than the state allowed in a hunting season and the hunting season would have virtually no effect on the deer population as a whole. He also said the hunting season would not negatively affect the wolf population as a whole either. So the science indicated a managed wolf season would not have a detrimental effect on the wolf population in MN.
IMO a wolf hunting season should be put back in place as it would result in revenue to the DNR through sale of wolf tags, allow those who wish to manage local wolf populalations in their area, and help wolves to retain their fear of humans.
    Agree with the video 100%!

@@jasonmeyer4587 yeah both those points make sense. I’m staying positive due to the fact that we are in our second low-snow winter in a row. That alone could really move the needle in terms of deer population in northern regions. Thanks for sharing.

I am a couple hours north of you. Luckily, I can trap and hunt wolves. My fawn population has disappeared at my woodlot so this fall I set up a bait pile with road kill. Snared 2 timbers,(same day, breeding pair),2 big male coyotes and my first big bobcat. Along with a logging cut later this year, should turn things around. I tried to have a cut every 5 years but haven't the last 15 and it shows

Well thanks for the info from MN. I hunt north central WI. and our deer herd population is as bad as I have seeni it and I have been hunting the same area since the 1960's. Unfortunetly the only thing that speaks now is money, if we keep buying licenses and providing coffers for the DNR and states we are losing this battle. WI. sells hundreds of thousands of deer licenses bringing in $$$$. Hunters in the north are getting no return from this money. Yes predators (wolves) and others are hurting us along with winters but this year we saw nary a doe much less buck, I wonder how the state legislatures would feel about losing that much revenue from license sales. I am afraid that this might be what it takes to get some attention to this matter. Seems drastic but drastic times call for drastic measures.

The game agencies in MN, WI, and MI can't do anything about the current wolf issue. Federal statutes prevent them from having a season, and there's not much they can do about it except collect data to determine wolf numbers and hope there's a change in tides. Yoopers were envious of WI a few years ago when WI was able to push through a season. Habitat changes have also hurt deer in the north. Look at how many paper mills have been converted to use recycled pulp. The mature aspen shown in the game camera footage is not good habitat for deer. Cedar logging in the yarding areas has also been hard on deer where I'm at. Many of the yarding areas here may never recover. On the flip side, winters are warmer with less snow than they were historically.

I’m from upper Wisconsin. It’s not only wolf mismanagement it’s also bear mismanagement. Way too many bear! You walk in the woods you see bear and wolf tracks. And trail cameras I get as many bear on camera as deer. And I do not use bait of any kind.
