In this lesson, you will learn about the periodic table and how it is used in chemistry. We will focus on how the periodic table is organized by atomic number, and discuss how properties of elements are periodic in nature throughout the table due to the electrons in the outer shells of the atoms. We will also discuss atomic mass and valence electrons, including predicting when an atom will gain or lose an electron in a chemical reaction..

Failed Chemistry in H.S. (1960's) - - my teacher was terrible. Later became a physician, took lots of Chemistry to get there. Now I watch your videos for the entertainment value, lamenting the miserable experiences with instructors who have zero communication skills. Many thanks!

Best explanation I've heard. We've always been told how great the table was arranged, but I never really knew why, or how it was so great. I just didn't see what the elements were "doing" other than if you add one proton after H you put it in another box and then add another one, you add one more box and so on until you got boxes 1-118. So what? NOW I see a method to the madness, and how they blend and how their relative positions are related and how they move to certain characteristics. Using the nobles as the basis for all the other elements to reach stability was really cool. Using groups as valences or how many electrons one group needed or wanted to give up to another group was new to me (it's been decades since I was in college). Thanx for the lesson.

I really appreciate the way you capture the essence and joy of chemistry. I have one question. Hydrogen has the ability to take or receive an electron, and if you consider there are only 2 elements using the first electron energy level, it seems like it fits the pattern for the top step of the metalloids. Any thoughts?

So, in short, TIG welding needs pure argon to protect the tungsten electrode, and MIG welding works best on a 75%/25% argon/carbon dioxide mix to get good weld penetration and flow. However The normal gas for TIG welding is argon (Ar). Helium (He) can be added to increase penetration and fluidity of the weld pool. Argon or argon/helium mixtures can be used for welding all grades. In some cases, nitrogen (N2) and/or hydrogen (H2) can be added to achieve special properties.

How do IGBT’s work to make a pure sine wave at 60hz?
I’m very new to this so sorry if it’s a dumb question. I understand that they switch on and off many times and the more they do that, the average looks more like a pure sine wave. If they only switch on and off 20,000 times a second and pulse width modulation works best when the pulses are extremely fast, how do you generate 60hz of ac? Thanks for your help.

I am a bit confused about hydrogen able to "gain or lose an electron". I understand it becoming an anion, but can it also become a cation? Wouldn't it simply be a proton, and no longer be maintaining it's identity?
