This 1951 US Navy training film goes over the importance and duties of the Shore Patrol. The Shore Patrol maintain good order and discipline among military personnel and apprehend all unauthorized absentees (and other offenders as necessary). They watch over sailors on shore leave and represents the commanding officers of the sailors. The film follows to Shore Patrol members through a day of patrols. Their activities include checking documentation of sailors to ensure they are allowed to be on leave, assisting civilians who have problems with sailors, keeping an eye out for deserters, and assisting civilian police if sailors are involved. The film appears to have been shot in the Washington, D.C. area and its suburbs.

12:36 The civilian was the late character actor John McGiver who served as an officer in the 7th Armored Div in WW2, and appeared in movies such as "The Manchurian Candidate," and "Midnight Cowboy," and quite a few television shows.

I was a British Military Policeman in Hong Kong during the early 70s. We used to carry out joint patrols with the US Navy SP’s of the bar and massage parlour district in Wanchai. We had some very interesting incidents at times. 15:41

Interesting film, I served in the Canadian Navy in the 70s and 80’s, we didn’t do shore patrol, but we saw plenty of USN shore patrol and military police. Subic Bay in the Philippines was under marshal law when we stopped there, so as it got close to curfew the military police would be out in force. In Busan Korea we got into a bar fight with some off duty marines and the military police came in swinging there batons and hauled off the marines and left us alone, go figure
I remember decades ago in San Jose seeing a Navy truck with emergency lights and the words "SHORE PATROL" on the back doors.

I was in USMC 1980 to 1984 I never saw any SP's not carrying a Pistol, Cuffs , a Radio, Chemical Weapon, I was stationed Navy Base for 3 1/2 Years, we had SP's, Marine MP's and what they called " Pan Am Police" Civilian Reserve Police, that worked with the SP's, I never saw them in the Marine Area's, our biggest issue was Drunks ! Drunk Driving, People Smoking Weed, Fights. I never got in any trouble at all, ever.
I was a SP at Port Hueneme in the Seabees in the 70's. We got trained at the Ventura Sherriffs Acadamy, and also by the FBI from Los Angeles in hand to hand combat. We covered the CBC and also Pt. Mugu Naval Air Station. We had Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. Best collar was a deserter we got that had been missing for over 15 years. Found him when his ex wife gave us a call. We showed up with Ventura Police and verified he was ours.
Boy this brings back many memories of pulling SP back when I was in in the 80's.
I was military police (army), an MP. It’s interesting to see about shore patrol (navy), SP.
Periscope Films has a similar 1950s film about MPs just like the SP film shown here.
I liked the SPs passing the MPs and later the Air Police, APs (Air Force) too.
Different times in the films, but the duties are relatively similar even today.
One time the Shore Patrol got blown under a bridge by a wave.
We pulled into Naples the day Italy won the World Cup (1982) and I pulled SP. It took me almost 3 days to make it back to the ship (I lost my partner somewhere on the second day).
I was a Marine Cpl. in 1977 and got SP duty in Naples and Rota. Yes stick Marines in cramped spaces then turn them loose with alcohol and we were given night sticks. What could possibly go wrong?
I remember being on Shore Patrol in Marseilles ,France in 1988. Loved that city.

I pulled Shore Patrol duty in Valletta, Malta in '69, but as a Corpsman, I never had to leave Fleet landing; I just had to patch up a few guys that had gotten into fights.
Those where the days
I stood patrol many many times 1977-1987.
Pulled SP duty in San Francisco and Singapore. Our ship had epoxied the clubs into the belt because they didn’t want them to get separated or lost when we were at sea. They told us it was a sign of authority and a show of force that was not meant to be used… crazy…

I was a known non-alcohol sailor and more then once I was volunteered for shore patrol. often It would be a party or picnic for another outfit that required an S.P so I got to enjoy those events. Another time I was on duty when we pulled into a port in the Azores. I was chosen again and got to go around the town with a local policeman. Enjoyed all of them.
i used to always volunteer for SP duty first day in a new port, you learn all the good spots that way for the next day

5"10" 135 Lbs of whopping fury standing SP Duty at the EM Club in Rota. And a few times taken out in town to help the regular SPs on emergency calls. Most everybody was bigger than me, but quieted down quickly when told to. It depends on how you are perceived.
I recognize John McGiver in the car crash scene. Also, I've seen the actor who played Joe Baker in some old TV shows. I don't know who he is.

Yep, it was. I looked up him up in Wikipedia, served in WW2, and more than a few big movies.
I didn't see any confirmation on IMdB or just now on Wikipedia, but as in all things I shall trust my own senses before I trust the interweb. And that face, and that voice, are very unique and unmistakable, i.e., theatrical gold. Vale John, you are missed.
I did shore patrol only one time, and it was at Pearl Harbor.

SP = babysitting drunk sailors. Trust me, I did it enough times over 20 years. Hong Kong, P.I. (Subic and Manila), Singapore, Diego Garcia, Pearl Harbor (home port), etc, etc.

I work in Boston in a hot (radioactive) lab maintaining and repairing HPLC analytical equipment for chemical and pharmaceutical companies. I like my job a lot and don't plan to retire soon. I live in Taunton,MA. The commute sucks that's all. How's things going with you? You old sea dog. 20 yrs! Wow! I never pegged you for a lifer!

Holy Loch Scotland in the Dolphin Bar Dunoon. Boomer Sub crew comes back and their Scottish girlfriends are not their girlfriends anymore.. ended up in a huge fight. Scottish police plus shore patrol broke it up..1987

I sure do, forty five years ago when we drank booze and smoked pot , it was a party every night, quite frankly it was the best time in my life, and I made it out alive !
