I visited Belgrade for the first time about 6 month ago and fell in love. I think it is a much underrated city along with Serbia in general. As a Black woman, I did feel safe...of course living and vacationing are different; however, I would and do tell others to put it on your list for travel.
As a half American, half Serbian Male, I am 22 now, I was born in the US and moved to Serbia at age 6, I feel very safe, I see groups of children not just in the capital, in the outskirts of Belgrade even (where I live), or in rural villages, walking in groups or even alone at night (2-3AM) aged 8-13 completely alone and without parental supervision, Serbian culture is different, we are taught to respect other people and judge people based on their personality first, and everything else second.
Blair, I must say that you are a very intelligent and cultured lady who breaks the stereotype of ignorant Americans. Personally you remind me of an extraordinary woman Candace Owens. My great respect.
Thank you so much for acknowledging the beauty in our culture. ❤ I'm from Belgrade and I've walked around Belgrade at all times of day and night (as a girl) and nothing bad happened. I'm so thankful to be born here and have the privilege to walk around my neighborhood at 3am to clear my thoughts.. didn't realize many women living in other places don't have that privilege.
Thanks for the nice opinion about my country. Of course there is no racism here, because we had a similar fate as people from Africa. The English, the Germans and others throughout history have treated us very badly, and some of them even wanted us to disappear from the planet.
In my city, I don't know that there was a case where someone mistreated an unknown woman on the street, especially if she was of a different race, skin color, etc. There are some undisclosed things between partners and it is primarily jealousy and a big EGO. But that is something entirely different. I responsibly claim that between 00.00-06 am you can walk freely even on dark streets, no one will harm you. What's more, if he knows you, one of the neighbors will always offer a ride.
@@dekiNBG I love walking in the evening! Most women feel paranoid if they walk alone at night. So it's nice to finally experience living in a city where I feel safe, morning, noon, and night.

@TheAlexandar711 Well, I'm speaking from my experience as a single woman who doesn't have any family or a husband to rely on. For local women, I'm sure it's safe, but they have family

Thanks for the wonderful words. It is important to say that there were never slaves in Serbia. The famous medieval Dušan's Code states that every slave who sets foot on Serbian land becomes a free man. That law is still studied in our schools today. This is the period, the 14th century, when Serbia was an empire (Dušan's Empire), one of the largest states at that time between the Western and Eastern Roman Empires. It was like that before and after that. Serbia has never had colonial pretensions and the desire to appropriate and steal natural wealth from anyone. On the contrary, she herself has always been a victim .. Greater hospitality and human qualities will be difficult to find more than here and perhaps in the newly created countries in the environment, which in fact share the same DNA as the Serbs.
