A lot of good advice. I’m on the journey to my first ultra 50k. started running at 245lbs back in May, race is in November so look forward to hopefully just completing it. Haha
Great video. I’ve just signed up for a 2 day 60mile ultra (30 miles or 48 km a day) through the forests and over the mountains of the Isle of Arran in scotland. I’m completely new to running but decided to jump in head first and really test myself. I’m doing it in memory of my dad who passed away in March and raising money for prostate cancer uk. I’ve got until April to train for it so let’s go!
This was a great to the point video. I've run one half-marathon, and my main goal is an ultra, but your point about respecting the distance rings true for me. I've got a lot of work to do before I would feel ready for an ultra. It's nice to have something to work towards.
So good! Glad you found it useful. There’s an element of never being completely ready before an ultra (just send it!), but absolutely some requisite work to be done as well.
Agree about the gym. By virtue of the programming heading into UTA last year my gym had us doing lunges, body weight and weight squads and it just strengthened the legs for the countless stairs. I pulled up the best I ever had out of the 3 ultras I’d done.
1:22 shout-out to couch to 5k! We all have to start somewhere and that’s where I started. Still remember the feeling of hitting 5k for the first time in my life. Amazing! What a gift.
Great video mate, I even passed it on to a friends brother who is just starting to train for his first ultra. Would love some future videos that dive deeper into both the nutrition and gym stuff!
Great video, just found your channel and subscribed. I love the eating part of ultras. To acclimate my stomach, I just eat anything and everything before my easy or long runs. I never want to get to an aid station, see something incredibly delicious there, and be like "no, nothing new on race day... 😢". So far the only hard passes for me are acidic, like tomato sauce, or fish, or anything too spicy. I've housed whole bowlfulls of mac n cheese with keilbasa and bacon, with zero issues. The chili on top caused some heartburn though. 😂
You nailed it with this (and others) but this was particularly simple and clear and your experience ensures it also also credible/reliable. Thanks again for the first class content@@lukewbarrett
Love the simplicity of your approach and appreciate you sharing! Noticed how stoked you get about carbs/hr in previous videos. I just ran Kosci 50km and the gut was not a happy camper. Would love any insights on nutrition/hydration to better manage this.
Training with race-day nutrition has been the best thing for me. Guts seem to be able to be trained just like the rest of your body. ~120g carbs/hour for my long runs makes ~120g/hour during my races feel normal. Maybe I’ll make a video on my nutrition strategy… 🤔
Hey good video Luke! I’m a middle of the pack runner and I enjoy long distance running half marathons and full marathons but I feel like 26.2 is my limit. My question is if I want to run a full marathon just to finish strong and at moderate pace 925-945 ish do you think it’s ok to train for a road race marathon like a ultra marathoner trains? I’m not good when it comes to speed work running below 8 and 750 paces my body starts breaking down when I go to fast. Do you think it’s ok if I just train for distance 4 times week and should I try get my long runs up 23-24 miles at east pace to prepare for long durations of marathon? I’ve hit wall last 2 at mile 18 and I want to avoid wall marathon. I also enjoy strength training squats deadlifts bench press. I know I will never run sub 3 or sub 250 but I would be happy with 350 marathons. I just run for health and to finish distances strong
Thanks mate! Sounds like you have a good plan! In short, yes, I think training for ultras is very similar to a road marathon. It’s really just the specificity of terrain that differs. I hear that you don’t like speedwork (neither do I!), but incorporating even a little bit will help immensely. Most of all just make sure you’re enjoying it though!
Top man. Do you run with the big drone controller also or do you use the phone app ? thought I saw it on one of those sweet ridge shots. Seems a muckle thing to carry in the Salomon vest ?
@@lukewbarrett I’m new to it so wasn’t sure how it would work. You’re a man after those 1%’s ! I’ll say that’s why I’m not as fast over the big lumps as you are ! Lack of controller weight in my pack
Do you think this is the same for any type of distance? I have just recently started running and training for a half marathon. Obviously distance would be different, but the amount of different types of runs per month?
Yeah I think it’s going to be similar. Change up the specificity of terrain to suit your race, but mostly easy running (70-80% of volume) then a bunch of threshold work with some real hard running sprinkled in occasionally. Good luck!
Blergh imagine having a partner who wanted to spend her leisure time in a way that didn’t involve mountains, dissolvable sugars and toileting in the bushes?
So, question. If you run 10-12 hours but then also say that strength training is important (completely agree), are you adding even more training hours on top of the 10-12? So 12-15 total? Or is the strength training factored into the 10-12?
You got it. Strength training on top of running volume. Realistically it’s only an additional 1 hour a week for me though. I’m not looking to be the hulk.
That video comes just in time for the start of my training for my first 80km trail run🙌 Great tips, even though I'm not new to ultras🙏 You forgot to mention how important that post run beer is!!😜
Step one: Get dumped the day before. Step two: Decide you are carrying 70 pounds of firefighter gear on your ultra. Step three: Be called a legend by the announcer. Step four: Have a croud cheer when you chug the whole beer offered at the finish line. Step five: Totally forget you just got dumped.
Alright Coach. 10,000 single-leg squat reps & as much food as I can eat. Got it.
You will go far young grasshopper 🙏

@@lukewbarrettthanks man. Will be watching your videos for inspiration in the run up 💪
Great advice Luke, the quality of your racing is shown by how disciplined you are with your training.
Keep up the good work!
‘Consistency’ is probably the most notable omission from my ramblings in the one. But yes! Thanks!

Great video mate.
You got me onto Precision and I couldn’t be happier to no longer needing to shop around for race supps.
So good! Nothing worse than buying new gels, hating them and ending up with a drawer full of random sugars 😂

Gym is also great conditioning for the descents too!
Excellent points made here! Thank you! Skal!
All good. My pleasure! 🤙
Thank you so much - I'm 13 weeks out from my first and this video was super helpful - keep hammering 🙏🏻✌🏻💪🏼
13 weeks! Still plenty of time for some solid work. Keep at it! 🤙
@lukewbarrett thank you so much brother 🙏🏻🔥🙏🏻💪🏼🙏🏻
nicely shot video

Hahaha this is amazing. Strong stomach = strong race!
Makes sense to me, thx! I’d add to focus on potential equipment needed (like poles/backpack) and get familiar with that during training
The list is endless in ways to increase preparedness for these things. Thanks!
From where is the shot at 0:18? Looks like a dream place to run.
Right?!?!! That’s the first climb out of Courmayeur on the CCC course - Tete de la Tronche. 😍
great video!!! I hope to run my first 100miler next year!!!
Thanks so much. 100miles! Huge! Best of luck. 🙏
This is so helpful. Thank you. 🤩

Excellent video and advice; clear, logical and experienced.

Awesome content, absolutely incredible mustache ❤
Haha thanks mate!
Great video, thanks! Should we run all those runs on trails or we do speed work on track? Longs also? Thanks.
I mix it up (road/trail) for all my runs, except my long runs. They’re always on trail - the more race specific the better. Hope that helps!
Nice videos mate! I'm currently staying in Australia for 5 months and I'm training for the UTA 100
Thanks man. So sick! Hope you enjoy it over here!

Just the standard DJI RC controller. Slips into the back of the vest fairly inconspicuously really. I’d say it’s worth it though!
@@lukewbarrett sweet, nice one.
Inspired so got one for my training.
wondered if it was easier with the mobile app.
Not sure the mobile app is super reliable… but of extra weight in the pack has to be good training too!

Please. Coffe is bad?
Coffee is the best!
How many hours/ miles is your longest long run in training and do you plan back to back long runs?
Depends what I’m training for. Before UTMB I went as long as 6.5 hours. But up to about 4-5 hours is generally where I’ll max out at.
In March 22 I will run my second Ultra Marathon 🙂 60Km and 4000 meters elevation gain 😁
Woah! That’s a big one! Thems some numbers that I like. Good luck 🤙
How'd it go?
going to run a 45K in 2025. Im 52 hehehe
