- Showing paper sketches of my underscore to one of the most epic moments in Mortal Kombat 11, when the heroes finally storm Kronika's Keep. The tracks "Fire God Ascension" and "Immortal Kombat" from the soundtrack album are from this scene in the game.
I present my paper sketch as well as the visuals, with music featured more prominently in the mix so that details can be heard. Annotations have been added to call out character/faction leitmotifs, give credit to live performers, and explain some of the changes I made between paper sketch and production/orchestration.
I hope this gives some insight into my process, and encourages other folks to try paper sketching!

So awesome to see this! Sketching is one of those things that really varies from composer to composer. Especially for a game, things change so much between sketching and production. One thing I really like is how useful spacial notation is paper sketches. Did you do your barlines afterwards, or do you commit to a time signature beforehand? Anyways, I thought I'd see some of those notepad or shower sketches lol.

Good ear! Shang Tsung's theme is in fact a reference to the MK2 Attract Mode, and it's used many times throughout MK11 and MK11:A. First instance is when Jaxx and Jacqui find Shang Tsung's Island, then in Aftermath it's most prominently heard when he's fighting robots alongside Nightwolf, when soulsucks Revenant-Nightwolf, in his evil ending, and when he wears the crown like you mentioned.
In fact, if you listen *reeeally* carefully when Shang poses as Raiden to get the crown from Fujin, it plays the melody there in the low strings as a hint that this isn't the real Raiden :-P

This is amazing! so many Easter Eggs! the enjoyment of playing MK11 and Aftermath increased😆(especially for Shangtsung fan😝LOL)
