Look at how the jockey in green silks horse literally zooms up beside the velvet jockey, 3 lengths behind, before falling back, he gave his horse a lot of rein and stretch there, I can’t believe a jockey would ask his horse to collect it’s hindquarters. The way the horses are kept in tact between each race is so graceful. I can’t believe the jockey in yellow silks kept managing to pull his horse like a nose length away from the final stretch. Gorgeous race, loved it.
Yes but 4 lengths back was Yala Enki carrying nearly 2 stone more as an 11 year old. Congrats to the winner but that was a Herculean effort to get that close with that weight, was so nearly another winner for Nicholls on his Super Saturday.
Yala enki would of won that with a few pounds less on his back. I backed him ew, my favourite previous winners of the welsh national were both Venetia Williams horses, jocks cross and emperors charm.

@@tecphobe really? My memory is terrible, I think he’s a slightly better horse now, he seems to jump a lot better than he used to, especially if the ground is really deep.
Now THAT is a horse race! I’ve tried to follow these races since I saw “National Velvet” as a kid & my very Irish father explained why the term “National” in the title. Amazing!
That just takes so much balance. I know from experience, but to be jumping that high and at speed is another thing entirely. I was out riding a particularly flighty horse years ago and well.... since it was a riding school where girths and numnahs generally got passed around I ended up with a girth too big. Got to the final gallop of the ride and was like 'yeah my girth feels a bit loose. Better make sure I sit steady on this one'. When we pulled up someone that was behind me during the gallop pulled me aside and asked how the hell I was still on, they saw a hands worth of daylight between the girth and the horse at points. I just laughed nervously and said it was all in the balance. I don't recommend it, but if anyone happens to be in this kind of predicament, remember that an even and steady weight distribution is key until you can get help.
Out hunting in New Zealand years ago, I was obviously lucky that our fences are mainly man-made with none of the hazards of the English countryside, jumping hedges and ditches etc. I was surprised that half the field was yelling at me, and eventually someone pulled me up to inform me that I had a broken girth. It appears I rode over two fences like that, my saddle stayed in place due to being a very good fit, and I guess I had good balance in those days. I know I should have had an over girth, or as we call it, a circingle, but I was a poor teenager with not enough ready cash to maintain my gear. In fact I think I rode with a borrowed saddle in those days. Shame on the owner, if that was the case, to hand over an unsafe saddle. I was pleased to be able to tell that tale a few times over the years, not many I know of who have jumped two hunt fences relying on balance to stay safe
Even with the overgirth, that was a spectacular effort. That saddle has slid way back, and as someone who has slid back when running bareback uphill, he was sitting on one of the least comfortable places to sit. Lots of movement, hard to reach the mane, very different from when you're at the typical place. The breast collar is the only thing that kept that jockey from just sliding all the way back. Awesome jockey and a great horse that just ignored the rider's position and the girth swinging around his legs.
If a horse doesn't want to run it it will not run I've seen it lots of times. But most horses love 2 run why do u think they keep running and jumping if the jockey falls off??
The horses keep running after the Jocks off, and fyi, that horse is 1200 pounds or more, it's not being forced to keep the jock between it and the ground.
@@DragonSouly That's what I'm trying to tell the person who thinks horseracing is cruel. If the watched the Eider chase at Newcastle the horse Big River decided I've had enough of this n just stopped running after only jumping 3 fences. If a horse doesn't want to race it simply will refuse.

That would interfere with the weight, since the safety vests are pretty heavy, they’ll often wear them during exercise runs though
Do they not have 2 girths anyway?
