Any other jockey would have probably pulled the horse up after the 2nd. Totally unbelievable ride, the best I’ve ever seen. A shame there was no crowd. You’ll be hearing a lot more of Hugh Morgan after that. And what a horse to do what he did 👌
Serious, serious respect to Hugh Morgan and the horse. What an amazing ride, just under 3 miles without stirrups and not only managed to stay on board but win the race. Incredible achievement and perfect example of never giving up. Horse probably thought he was out for a nice days hunting. Superb.
Could have lost his bridle and still won. Giving credit to the jockey full credit to the horse because a race horse isn't used to being ridden that way at all.. Just great to see and also proof that horses enjoy their racing.
“The power in his thighs.” Together, horse and rider outstayed & outhearted everyone! I wonder if the owners then gave the horse to the rider as a deserved reward? Thanks for the extended ending.
It always amazes me at how excited people get at a rider jumping without stirrups. ANY one that does jumping, be it steeples, show ring or cross country, should have the balance and strength to jump bareback. That’s how we were always taught
Why does nobody else do it, if there's nothing to it? If a racehorse is a genuine no-hoper, why not try it without stirrups if it's so easy? Could you be on to something? (I doubt it, but I guess one never knows...)
Watched this coz read the headlines. Still couldn’t think he would win turning into the straight. Absolutely sensational ride. If that had been Walsh or McCoy, imagine the Headlines. Other than they would have pulled it up. Sensationally sensational for all us who love NH racing. Did I mention sensational!!!
Take a bow Hugh Morgan what a ride that was unreal and you should definitely get a medal or something for this incredible achievement this was the best ride of the season by far so well done Hugh Morgan
I hope one day I witness you win the Grand national young man!!! Horsemanship at it’s finest and a champion jockey in the making I am sure. Best of luck

I know this is an old video..still I agree ride bareback first it will teach you balance and so many other things then move on to saddles. Cant stress that enough.
"Lots"??? I've seen it a handful of times, but maybe you watch more racing than I do? I'm reminded, however, of how I was taught the meaning of a word, when I was still but a nipper. I ran into the house one day, and the following conversation ensued: Me: Dad! There are millions of cats in our garden! Dad: Really? Me: Yes! Dad: How many, exactly? Me: Three. Dad. Here's a big and probably new word for you. The first syllable sounds a bit like "eggs"....
@@arthurpewtey I've seen it on many occasions but yes I do watch a lot of racing. I bet for a living, and have done for the past 15+ years. I will say it obviously doesn't occur as much as horses that are matched at 1.01 and still lose. But yes quite a lot get to 1000 but usually just for very small amounts. To quote some stats From 2009 to 2011 inclusive (Flat and jumps), there were nearly 140,000 horses matched at 1000.0 in-play and 108 of them won, which is 0.07%. And that is just over a 2 year period. Extrapolate that trend outward, over the 10 or so years since, you can assume that trend would continue so that's probably around another 550 horses matched at 1000 and winning over the past 10 years. At the same time, between 2009-2011 nearly 28,000 horses were matched at 1.01 in-play and 387 of them were turned over. Which equates to 1.38%. Extrapolate that out as well and you're probably talking around 1,600-2,000 matched at 1.01 and losing over past ten years.
Personally I don't see anything to go on about. If you can't jump without irons, you shouldn't be jumping at all. I learned to jump bareback before I ever jumped with a saddle, and jumped in excess of 4 feet that way. Either you can ride or you can't!
Possibly a cazy comment but would not having iron's not affect the advertised weight before the race and the weigh in after the race ? Norm you have to weigh the same in and out :-)
Unbelievable and if it was a top 3 jockey done this ...well ye can imagine the reaction, Hugh gave a great interview too...I am gobsmacked but would love to see him walking from the bed when he wakes up 🤣
Like many I suspect, I was urging him to pull up cos of the length of the race but I was wrong and they were both brilliant. The trainers including the likes of Arthur Moore applauding them into the winners enclosure is a measure of the feat and the icing on the cake for me.

Oh yea he could hav lost the bridle let the horse guess at fences himself and try find his way to the line good man... ur some clown

Can I ask a stupid question, im not a rider, why can't he just slide his feet back in them? Is it very difficult?
His right stirrup snapped so there was nothing to put his right foot into. Left foot only would be more unbalancing than neither foot in.

Most of them can and do. This chap had a stirrup snap off though so had to choose between one foot, or no feet in a stirrup

When that kind of performance gets the whole world talking about horse racing, it's time the grand national was run without tack!! 😜
