Contrary to the popular belief of illuminati conspiracies about Eurovision,it is,after all, "a SONG CONTEST".
United Kingdom has won Eurovision 5 times already, the reason why they did not do good in last years is due to song, not politics or conspiracies.
Take Germany for example. They had a good pop song one year, they won it.
Last years they had bad songs, they did not do good.I can give you as many examples as you like.

chessplayer nah I know it's not some illuminati conspiracy. I just think we aren't particularly liked across Europe. Understandably! So yeah if we have an amazing song then we'll do well, but we'll never get any points from loyalty/love.

The last country that I want to be part of Eurovision is the USA. Please, don't let this happen. They think, that they are the best and greatest when it comes to music. Pffh. They would ruin the contest. It's EUROvision. Not WORLDvision. Australia? Ok, why not. It's a nice country/continent and they are pretty alone down there. USA? That's way too much.

+Annika Elstermann I'd be alright with the USA entering providing this was the entry every single year. • @thewpbard
      @thewpbard 8 років тому +9

+wyl Kan There is no rule that prevents the countries from singing in any language. In fact, there have been some entries that have been sung in languages that have been completely made up just for the contest. So, theoretically, we could have the entry for the UK singing in Swahili. Or the entry for Russia singing in Elvish.
Also, to my knowledge, the reason it's called the Eurovision Song Contest is because it's a song contest broadcast by Eurovision (eurovision.net, not eurovision.tv, which is for the ESC), which is a department under the European Broadcasting Union; the same reason the show "Comedy Central Presents ..." was called that - it was broadcast by Comedy Central.

I'm European and I watch eurovision. And I totally get it that this is a joke. We ourselves love making fun of eurovision, because often it is very silly. But I didn't really think this was funny, simply because it feels a bit weird that he's making fun of something he doesn't know anything about. He hasn't watched Eurovision and probably didn't read up on the history behind it either (which was about bringing the European nations together after WWII).
It's like if someone would joke about traditions in Uganda without having any connection or experiences with the culture. The best comedians joke about something from their own experience, not from ignorance and about cultures they don't know much about or are not involved with.

Joking about Uganda's traditions and culture was once turned into one of the most popular memes ever (Uganda Knuckles). Even ugandans themselves considered it funny. It's not about joking about topics you know little about. It's all about the perfomance and his was simply a bad perfomance, that's why it's not funny. A lot of people are ignorant about the qualities of my prick yet if a good comedian made a good joke about it, everyone would laugh, right? Don't put too much heat into it.

***** Well, I don't think it's really fair to compare a large country to an entire continent of dozens of countries. The difference between American states is smaller than the difference between European countries and cultures.
And you know that the USA is known for its tackiness and cringe-inducingness, right? :P
They're also known for their years of extravagance, while Europe seems to have stayed more sober over the decades.
Besides that, Europe doesn't really have continent wide 'media events'. It's just every country for itself. In every country there is a small part of the population watching the ESC, though :P
Though I agree, the ESC has been a laughing stock for us Europeans for ages. Which is why it's nice to see that my country (the Netherlands) finally gets it and started putting normal songs up, which is why we became 2nd in 2014 I think, people thought of it as a breath of fresh air between all the madness :P But you also must admit that there have also been great world hits came from the ESC. Such as ABBA with Waterloo, but more recently Loreen's Euphoria.
It's like 50% just wants to make a fool out of themselves, 40% are trying but failing (hard), and there's always this 10% of songs and countries at the ESC that try to make a good song and a nice show and actually produce some pretty cool stuff :D

Of course we Europeans can take a joke, and I’m not mad ESC is being ridiculed. I mean, every year there are some pretty ridiculous acts in the mix. However, 1944 was not one of them. No need to explain the joke over and over to me (“they laughed because they didn’t expect it! That was the point omg”), I get it. But what makes it troubling for me is that the joke was made by somebody who clearly doesn’t know that much about it and is effectively an ‘outsider’ to the culture and history of Europe and Eurovision. Furthermore, the only reason the audience didn’t expect the serious song is because of the INCORRECT description of Eurovision beforehand. Yes it’s fun, yes it’s campy, yes it’s full of pop songs. But that’s not all that it’s about and it never has been. It’s been a platform for social and political issues for ages (even though that’s not officially allowed), so for any European watching ESC a serious song winning wasn’t that surprising at all.
The song was quite alright. No problems with it. The only issue I personally have with this is the distasteful way they joke about a mass murder they know too little about to write jokes to begin with.

Let me explain why they are laughing. First, when they *kill you all* there is nobody left there to *say sorry*. It's a paradox. And second, the songs should not be written about war either. They just sound so wrong. Case and point has been made. Yes war is brutal and terrible but you cannot sing about it and expect everyone to be so serious about it. And politics play a crucial part in Eurovision. Points are given based on political ideals and interests. Ukraine won because most country's from EU based their votes thanks to sanctions that EU imposed against Russia because of civil war that happened in Ukraine.
*Politic should be banned from any competition. If you fail to understand that, you fail pretty much at understanding true values in life*.

+Fionn Devaney Who are you to say that you speak for 'all of Britain'? You are a nobody. The song was bad and I won't stop anyone from taking the piss out of it but it did not go against any of the Eurovision rules. The song was mostly about the individuals experience, a government that doesn't exist anymore and a very generic story of invasion. It was perfectly fine. If anyone saw links with the current situation in Crimea, that is there own association. Also, European countries aren't destroying one another and half of this country don't want to leave the EU, myself included. And to top it all off, you end with a clearly elitist form of thinking; self declaring this country as the 'civilised' one. We are not a better country than many of those in the EU. Just thought I'd make it clear that you do not speak for all of us.

The wave of immigration will not stop any time soon and they are determined to live in UK (and Germany) in or out of EU. The show didn't expect anything, the áudience expected a happy pop song, because stephen deliberately told them it was going to be a song for the summer.
He purposely set them up to be fooled and áfter they recovered from the surprise, they stíll laughed at 'kill you all' (even though it was clear this was not a happy song.)
I'd also like to add that it did not escalate quickly...it started with "strangers are coming, they come to your house' and scary music. The follow up is obviously not going to be 'they will offer you an applepie.'
The moment it díd escalate, was when the murder *happened.* Which is why the song and the victims deserve more credit.

Eurovision was NOT created to unite Europe. You do not even have to be a European country to enter (which is why Australia and Israel both participate).

Well, it IS kind of interesting how it is actually against the rules to bring politically, nationalistic or otherwise charged subjects to the contest. However lately songs or acts like that that seem to win. The song or its quality doesn't seem to matter, because the song and its singer are objectively speaking really of appaling quality. Yet they win .. why? Because of the charged topic: "OMG she is soo brave!" or "OMG that is sooo sad!". The Crimean peninsula being recently annexed had ofcourse nothing to do with it .. yeah right.

Even if we got hyped up for it and made a serious go at participating [assuming we'd ever be invited], I imagine us getting low scores or dead-last place a lot, like the UK. Plus, you have Australia. This is why America isn't allowed to participate.
Australia is easy to justify being in the competitiom. They've enjoyed the competition for a long time, we envited them as a friendly gesture, and now we keep inviting them back because they're entries are so well loved by the fans of the contest. They're respectful, take the contest seriously, and they give us some amazing songs for the competition.
America makes fun of stuff like this too much and they'd take over the whole contest and make it about them. Don't get me wrong, there are some brilliant Americans out there that could bring some new cards to the table, but America is already salty enough that they're not in the competition. I never said it was okay to laugh at Europe's history. In spite of my affection for Colbert I found this segment disappointing, mainly because his writers had no idea what they were talking about. That aside, I also can tell you the audience members were laughing in surprise at the mood shift, not at the subject matter of the song.
I fully support jokes about the bigoted orange manchild human disaster that is the POTUS. It's comments like Florenna's that push the blame on the U.S. majority for putting him in office that are insulting. Millions of people that did not vote for him are already suffering. Trump lost the popular vote (the vote of U.S. citizens), so in a better world where the U.S. voting system was fair and balanced Trump would have lost.
