  • July 16, 2022: Southern Pacific #4449 "Daylight", the last of the operating art-deco steam locomotives, has been steaming up for 4 days and is ready to move out of the engine house to the yard to meet visitors for the day at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center in Portland, OR. The #ORHC is a working locomotive shop and museum, home to 3 operating steam locomotives including Daylight and welcomes visitors from all over the world.
Under the direction of hand signals, Daylight pulls forward to couple to the PR 190, a privately owned vintage diesel locomotive, and backs it over the shop pit to help provide a safety cover before visitors arrive.
The locomotive in the background is the Spokane, Portland & Seattle #700 in the process of getting ready for a 15 year FRA inspection.

I was lucky enough to see this train twice when I was a teenager I was ditching school and I saw her coming to our train depot in Indio ca, she was red white and blue, and I didn't know? who she was and then, I saw her years later in daylight colors, she doesn't know me but, I remember her.

I’mma be a bit of ackchyually guy about the description. AT&SF 62L, erm, I mean, NKP 190 is indeed privately owned, but is more specifically privately owned by Mr. Doyl McCormack who has been practically synonymous with the 4449 ever since the days of the 1976 American Freedom Train.
SP&S 700’s FRA 1472 boiler rebuild and inspection is in the final stages and is near completion, not in the process of being prepped for.

Minor nitpick in the description, 4449 isn't that last operating art deco steam locomotive, N&W 611 is an art deco steam locomotive in operation too.

Why is it? Why are they doing it where there’s so much smoke in the building?

For the center's 10th anniversary, the Daylight was steamed up and moved to the north yard for guests to see operational (as much as possible). The PA 190 was pulled back to cover the maintenance pit (a channel between the tracks for working on the underside of the locomotives) to keep guests safe. It takes 4 days to steam up the 4449 and they didn't want to move it outside until then.
