    This is spot on. I majored in Econ and have worked in a variety of industries and capacities. (Hence the flexibility) All were large F500s. Most big corps are data driven and Econ teaches you how to think critically about pressing problems.

    I’ve always felt economics should be ALL high school student’s focus from 9th-12th grade. It’ll be four years of critical thinking and understanding of how and why the world operates the way it does. Of course make time for arts and phys ed but HS would’ve so much more interesting and beneficial going into college if we all knew how to think like an economist

    I am now a high school economics teacher, after spending the first 15 years of my career as a financial advisor and investment compliance officer. My son just graduated with a degree in economics and math and is heading to law school in the fall. Of interest, he started as a mechanical engineering major, and switched to Econ after 2.5 years. He still was able to graduate in 4 years after taking just two classes during the summer. Economics is a great major to consider switching to, if you find that your heart just isn’t in your (first) chosen major, especially if you have taken plenty of math classes.

    What did I do with an economics major: tried Phd, dropped out, became an economic consultant, wanted to dig into the theory more so went back for a PhD (part time for a while), realised academic research wasn’t for me so went back to consulting, got a phone call one day from a headhunter inviting me to work for the energy regulator (my field) so headed to the public sector to make a difference, found making a difference fantastic but hard work at senior level, had a year out to be Mum, set up my own consultancy which was pretty successful because by then I had expertise and network, did not like isolation of being a one-man band or income uncertainty of self employment so took a side job teaching economics at a local university, remembered how much I loved being a TA when doing my PhD, as if by magic as things clicked my institution where I had done my PhD advertised for teaching focused roles, 9 years after graduating from PhD went back to my alma mater and have stayed in this role longer than any other but the road is still there for travelling.

    I’m a physics major but I have minors in data science and economics. I love the economics minor because it gives me insight in how everything isn’t clear-cut when suggesting policies for example in environmental economics. The physics major allows me to read and understand the economic models better. In addition, economics is going to serve me well in my personal life by studying different markets like healthcare and real-estate industries. Lastly, I love economics because it gives you the bigger picture on interdependence of our complex, human(error) system.

    My choices for grad school is either finance w/ concentration of CFA, law school, or economics. I'm having a tough time figuring out what I want to do.

      Asmodeus, these are all great options and I can see why you are having a hard time deciding. I think you will have to work backwards. Figure out what you want to do, work wise, then that will help you decide on the graduate program. This is a personal preference since all three options lead to great possibilities.

      It really depends on what you want to do after college. If you’re interested in doing a PhD then you first have to take a lot of math, which you can read more about on the AEA’s website. For that, the math-econ major is the best preparation. Note that you don’t need to major in history to study it, though!

    Dr. A I really hope you open and see this, even though it’s been months since the video came out. I have a question, I been doing my research about taking economics or what actually economics can influence just not myself but to a lot of people, question is: Does attending a specific school matter? in terms of wanting to have a great outcome of learning THE ECONOMICS. I know IVY league schools teaching in economics are way focused differently (which is not an ideal to attend by everybody) than other colleges. Last question: Is economics fully based on essays and Is writing essays a huge factor in passing this major? Coming from me who really struggled or who procrastinate writing essay but willing to learn how to write essay specifically and learn.

    • @EconWithDrA
      @EconWithDrA  2 роки тому +2

      Mesha, I see your comment. I’ll try to answer your questions but I am sure my answers will spur other questions so please ask away. 1- does school matter? Yes schools matter. But it depends on what you want to do, what life you want to have, and where you want to live. It’s more complicated question. Path to economics and careers in economics are so varied. 2- economics is based on your ability to communicate complex ideas effectively. @@EconWithDrA thank you so much for responding never thought you’d see it. Anyways, reason why I asked the first question is hearing from others that there are some colleges specifically professors that don’t so well have students understand economics as the outcome, which I agree and disagree until I saw your “how to learn” vid. Talking about you need to teach yourself or using the method (SQ3R method) on how to learn new things in general literally was just watching it soon as I saw your response. Like I’m an open minded student or I try to be, math wise I have no problem with it, data visualization i can deal with and as long as I have a good teacher that can go deep into it yeah I’m open for it to learn, and etc. I truly want to be an instrument to influence people in a broad way you know like I think bigger than me and the way I look at conflicts around us it gets my nerves thinking deep solutions for it and that’s why I find economics comfortable to think and wanting to learn. Reason why I asked what specific school are they and i know there’s a lot out there. I’m thinking UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY. I appreciate your time

      Pamela, thanks for stopping by to watch some of my videos. I do not know of any US universities that offer an online econ PhD. Doesn’t mean they don’t exist, I’ll do some research on this and report back to you. Most PhD programs require you to work closely with faculty advisors and colleagues. Historically, physical proximity was assumed to be a requirement for good team work. The pandemic has changed that perception, and I wonder if universities are introducing online PhD programs.

      @@EconWithDrA Yes, honestly I originally picked economics because LSAT scores are typically higher in Econ majors and they earn more money later. But I found that once you get past the initial gen ed Econ 101 type of credits, economics opens up more of an interesting world of the intersection between economic theory and other disciplines like psychology and public policy. Further, I find that I apply principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics frequently in dealing with the federal government, representing individuals and businesses, and those arguments are more compelling than almost all others. Visualizing and charting data for people was also a skill I honed in attaining the Economics B.A.

I was thinking about doing a master program in econ side, would you think that is good choice for someone to switch career and at the same time bring knowledge IT business application knowledge to other side? Economics majors that can communicate effectively are in great need. I just saw a posting a couple of weeks ago from the Economist. They were looking for just that, writing capabilities and economic knowledge. If you are passionate about it and make it your purpose to use English to better communicate economics, then that is a win!

It took a while for me to come to this decision,but i'm a college student and I'm thinking of changing my degree to economics or a related field so I can be happy with my salary. I wanted to be a police officer but I don't want to have to balance out family

    • @EconWithDrA
      @EconWithDrA  Місяць тому +1

      Hi! Thanks for your question. Here is my take, there are many reasons we pick majors and careers. Money, work-life balance, interest, mobility…etc. you pick what is best for you. There is no perfect job or major, all have pros and cons, make sure to know the pros and the disadvantages of your choice. You will need to find ways to build positives around its disadvantages. We push the narrative that jobs and majors should be passion driven and that all that matters. I don’t like that for a couple of reasons. 1- passion towards something doesn’t mean it’s all positive. 2- careers should be rewarding and exciting but to assume that it will never drag is a false assumption.
      Good luck with your decision.

    Hello Sir...
    I hope you are doing well.
    Its been a while for this video.
    Sir, I aim to pursue careers on Governance and policy and targeted economics since A'Level. Now I took Economics as a major...
    Sir there is a problem regarding mine.. Sir I'm very weak at mathematics. Thus I'm struggling to maintain good cgpa on mathematics courses..
    Sir You know many say economics is all maths. However sir I do not beleive this vague statement & I believe the diversity of economics.allows to specialise on field that will play a role on the development in particular.
    Sir Regarding I'm a student, What's your take on being weak at mathematics and how much barrier I might face in the future for this issue.?
    Best,
    Irfan Mojumder
