My father, NED BROOKE, was a station manager at WSAZ in the mid 1950’s…My twin brother and I were born in 1954 at St. Mary’s Hospital

Nice to meet you, Anita. My dad was on the Saturday Night Jamboree from 1953-1964. I'm sure they met each other a few times at least. About a year ago, I came across a PhD thesis that someone had written at Ohio State. It was about the entire history of WSAZ from its beginnings until 1960, when the thesis was completely. It's way over a hundred pages. Let me know if you'd like a link.

I loved Mr Cartoon as a child growing up in the late 60's into the 70's. Mr. Cartoon was must see tv after school. My little gang of rugrat friends and I even got on the show once around 1974. For that 1/2 hour we were 9 year old tv stars, broadcasting live!
I saw Jule Huffman (Mr. Cartoon) at a Huntington restaurant when I was a grown ass 20 something adult with children of my own. My reaction was I about dropped my bottoms & wanted to scream "OH MY GOD! ITS MR. CARTOON!!!!!!" I couldn't help but rush his table and tell him that I am such a huge fan! He was the nicest man on the planet & seemed pleasantly surprised. We had a brief conversation talking about memories.
I'm 60 now and I hate Oprah Winfrey to the core of my bones. It's been a lifelong hatred against that woman. Gentle readers, I'm sure your asking "why do you hate Oprah Winfrey?", are you racist?
I'm not racist but I believe in that right should prevail. WSAZ cancelled Mr Cartoon, (to much aggravation) and phoned in the Opera Winfrey show on their giant satellite dish.
    Unforgiveable.

most of these people are no longer with us. its amazing how NBC built its network in large part around the success of an affiliate in small town appalachia. I read Bud Rogers book. it an incredible story. thankfully they have had a lot of wonderful owners willing to invest. thats the problem with media and entertainment today, its about cost cutting and consolidation is like a religion. you have to invest to have success in this world....

For awhile, the FCC let them run an insane amount of power. on channel 5. eventually as more communities applied for their own channel, 5 was allocated to Clarksburg and WSAZ had to move to channel 3 and eventually reduce power so they wouldnt interfere with WKYC in CLE. People on hilltops could pick it up as far north as Wheeling and as far south as Bluefield in the 50s and early 60s.. They were once on cable in many of the southern counties in the Columbus market until cable companies started eliminating duplicate network programming from their lineups in the early 2000s. I hated to see that. but they didn't want to charge comsumers for multiple ABC/NBC/CBS stations in the era of retransmission fees.

He was a reporter in Nashville after WSAZ. He would show up on TNN doing segments for the Crook and Chase show. What was that - 25 years ago?
