I owned an Aventime for 13 years and the only problem was what the hell do you replace it with? It took a Tesla Model S for me to let go of the best and most exciting vehicle I had ever owned.
@@vakasm8227 I miss it when I see one on the road, but I am very happy with the Model S. Now I am waiting for Renault's all electric vehicle with French design uniqueness.
With only about 400 of these in the United Kingdom, this is one of the rarest cars you can stumble upon to the point where you will be really lucky to see one. Also like the unique Coupe/MPV crossover design and the fantastic space/visibility, making it possibly one of the most luxurious cars on the market. Definitely an awesome car!
Kristian Myhre-Bjerkenes he never said or even alluded to it being shot in 13. I remember men and motors, but was teen when it launched, so mainly remember the topless darts show. I don't actually remember any motor related shows from M&M.
I was looking forward to a decent review of this car, but all the arty shots and hiccups really got in the way. I'd like to have seen more of what the car actually offered and less of Hamster and his silly nonsense.
Driving it makes you feel like you really do own the road. Bit on the thirsty side, and parts are expensive, but I love mine and would not let it go for any German saloon.
Haha back in 2007 one of these was in traffic in our town and literally everyone stared at it I remember thinking "is that Espace on drugs??" Lol the guy in sitting in it looked really embarrassed it was like time stopped when it appeared
By father bought one because they are really rare (8.600) and will soon cost a LOT of money. The doors on these things are huge and ridiculously heavy, I'm sure they could easly stop a pistol round. It's funny to see how the next 2000's Renault models look will be inspired by this car
Tbh it’s actually a cool vehicle. The colour combination and design just add modern 2022 retro and hybrid petroleum electric and these would be hugely popular
As unreliable as these old frenchies were, I miss the madness. The massive 607 and c6, the bonkers avantime and 1007. Even something weird like the Vel Satis
It's a crossover. Even ahead of the Toyota RAV4, which was specifically a crossover SUV. This is basically the Kia Soul, Jaguar i-Pace, and Mercedes Benz GLA ancestor.
This car is weird enough to be mine. I recall reading about it back then, my favorite part of the article being a picture of a girl walking briskly away from James May, with the caption something like "He suggested she try it in the Open Air with him...", that apparently being a trade name for one of the car's features.
It's a nice car, but it never got a diesel engine in the UK like it's brother, the Renault Vel-Satis did. A diesel version in the UK would have got better economy figures over the heavy thirsty 2.0 litre, 2.2 litre, and V6 petrol engines.
They would have sold a million or more had they exported it to the U.S. This is one of only three cars that Clarkson, Hammond, and May all like. Thanks.
Made by Matra, just like the early Espace. Unfortunately Renault released the competing Vel Satis around the same time, basically killing Matra by doing so.
exactly. I like this car too but it is impractical to be honest, but it was a brave attempt to "look" in the future, when you consider, that a VW Golf 4 was state of the art back in 2001
This hiccups and teleporting bullshit with the low tech music is an example of how not to do a review. Hammond should use his earnings from TG and Discovery to buy the review and never let it be seen again. Not your finest hour.
I first set eyes on the Avantime in the dystopian movie "Children of Men". I thought it was the ugliest car I'd ever seen. The Avantime here looks actually good.
En mi opinión este coche deberían de haberlo dejado como prototipo no como coche normal.En aquellos tiempos era super caro intentar adquirir uno por sus equipamientos.
+Menandmotors Works well. Quiet, comfortable car, but a little is hardish suspension. I plan to change the original suspension Monroe to Koni that would improve road holding. Unfortunately I have no option of a glass roof. My second car Citroen XM. Sorry for my english, I'm from Russia.
It's a Renault. The cars they made at this point in time were riddled with electrical faults and water ingress. I had a Megane and it was the worst car ever. A complete money pit. Had to scrap it as it became a danger to drive when the steering rack began to fail. Now drive a 2004 Mazda 6 and not let me down at all. Never go back to a Renault!
Andrew Haines haven't your mazda been eaten by rust yet? I am yet to see a Mazda 6 older than 10 years old which is not a rustbox lol but yeah renaults of that era were pretty shit
what? I have a Avantime, a Megane RS, and a Velsatis and none of them have had any faults really, the only thing has been the air conditioning not cooling on the Megane and VelSatis. the Avantime has not had any faults at all!
Am I the only one who found the hiccups a load of bollocks? Whoever wrote this was hopefully fired. Quirky, cool car though.
the hiccup joke he was doing worn thin after his first hiccup it propper annoyed me
Yes, it took away from the whole review, and the car itself.
Fired is a bit far, maybe just tortured a bit
at least he wasn't breaking wind.. then again I may have given him an idea..sorry..
maybe he wrote it after the accident \(°_o)/¯

+Mark Martin good man, I was too young to pick these up. I really, really want one!
What engine did you have in yours?
ZesPak french Renaults are the BEST!!! i got a 19 Energy from the early 2000s..
Should have kept the avantime.

2:34 - 3:03: Can this section get any more 90s?
It was shocking to say the least
I died at that part laughing
+BASSCODE PROJECT it's not even a sports car it makes no sense lol
Exactly, its a grand tourer. Still a coupe but a coupe doesn't mean sports car.

Yep, very rare. Not you usual bog-standard family car.
I'm happy that I've only Seen 2 Very rare cars indeed
"making it possibly one of the most luxurious cars on the market"
What are you smoking, my dude?
The music and the presentation of this review seem dated... the car still looks so modern! A classic.
the music is from the time and the disappearing act is not so good regardless of time
S. Leo Chapman given they hardly sold any of these, they will become a decent collectable classic.
Kristian Myhre-Bjerkenes he never said or even alluded to it being shot in 13.
I remember men and motors, but was teen when it launched, so mainly remember the topless darts show. I don't actually remember any motor related shows from M&M.
I thought the review was shot in 2001.....😳
@@datathunderstormIt is from 2001, but at that time people were still living in the 90s if you get what I mean.
Tesla nowadays: "We've invented a whole new reduced interior style."
Renault: "Really?"
2:37 "guys if we shake the camera back and forth it will look like the future!"- said no one ever
20 years ahead of time, if it were available in 2020 with an electric motor they would sell like hot cakes.
Agreed. It would fit right in with cars designed in the last 4 years.
Evs are shit
They still look good today!, it's a shame they flopped
As it STILL looks modern, nearly 20 years later, I expect that it truly was just too ahead of its time
I consider it a modern classic for sure
The filmmaking is soo cheeeesyyy
Typical for the late 90s and early 00s
Looks like something from Croatian tv.

Less units than the Aventador
Really an ICON of a car concept production. Such a pity it flopped. They really should make it come back at some point soon.
I wish they'd just do _one_ shot where they show you the driver's view of the dashboard. Just for one second would have been good.
even today it looks fresh
Haha back in 2007 one of these was in traffic in our town and literally everyone stared at it I remember thinking "is that Espace on drugs??" Lol the guy in sitting in it looked really embarrassed it was like time stopped when it appeared
1:40. So that is why he was not on the Top Gear Peugeot meeting in Paris…
A real pity they only sold about 8000 of these :/ i'd really love one second hand, but they're inpossible to come by
You can find one here: www.leboncoin.fr/voitures/739500139.htm?ca=22_s

I've seen about three of these on UK roads. Rare as rocking horse shit...
I've seen none
i've seen one in silver in italy
I've seen 2. One in grey and a blue one that lives round the corner from my house
rocking horse shit? what is that?
Was it offered in right hand drive?
The music that plays on 2:02 is a remixed version of the Doctor Who theme.
Still - Allons-y! :D
It's quirky n awkward but downright unique. Nice job, renault.
what show's this from? 7 years later Richard would mod this car with Jeremy and James on Top Gear to try and make it faster than a Mitsubishi Evo :-)

The Aventine was ahead of its time
Doug could do a 1hour rewiew about this car.
Those hiccup scenes got annoying after the first 3
Its ironic how this is the same car that they used in top gear , budget track car project
I've only ever seen 1.
I've seen 3 McLaren P1's!!!!
Where tf did you saw an Avantime and 3 MCLAREN P1'S wtf
Still loving the Avantime. It still a great looker.

+Revving Machines fantastic soundtrack and review.
"they will sell as many as they can make" aaaaand Matra went out of business because of the Avantime.
They could launch this car today and it would still look futuristic
Nice beard, Richard Hammond :)
Reminds me of the goatee he has now.

Yeah sure
I'd love one of these!, always been a fan of the avantime
Me too
from the front it looks like a more stylish Honda Fit
So basically it's a mixture of Espace and Scenic but without rear doors
The only thing bad about this car is the little runt showing it off
2:34 Oh yeeeeah. Beat is pumping!

What a car! Only the underrated French could design it and produce it. Another DS?
the only thing that looks bad at this car is the back. And only the ugly designed back ist the part, Renault has puz on their other models too.
