You missed what I considered the best scene when Claire, listening to how Joseph was murdered, by the father...and crying , goes to the bottom of the staircase and looks up - freezes in terror because the wheelchair from the attic is now looking down at her!!
that specific part scared me so badly !!!
The Changeling is the best "Haunted House" film in horror period (My opinion). Plus it's the sleeper gem that people tend to look over. Such a classic awesome y'all did a great review of it and helped shine some light on this forgotten but fantastic film.
Thanks for stopping by. This is totally a sleeper film, didn't even know about it until we were older, and good thing too cause as kids it would probably have scared the shit out of us. Agreed that it is one of the best haunted house films ever. Cheers.
A fantastic ghost story, definitely one of the best ever made, and a must watch eveytime Halloween comes around. Thanks for the review!
Finally watched this on Shudder & it really is creepy as hell! I like how they constructed the mystery over the entire film and didn’t dump everything in the first 30 minutes. Plus the musical score is terrifying and beautiful and George C. Scott (being the legend he was) holds the film together perfectly
Glad you enjoyed it, the film really is a masterpiece!
This is the most Canadian review I have ever seen, I kept waiting for a moose to come walking on the set.
hahah! We keep hearing that we are super Canadian! I guess we are, we just can't see it!
never heard of it, found and watched it last night! Best ghost story movie ive ever seen. The acting was incredible!
Have you seen the exorcist 3? Also with George c Scott? He's really good in that too! We will be covering it very soon
Once again this is one of the movies that scared me by only seeing the VHS cover sitting on the shelf in the video rental store! Took me until my late teen years to get the courage to rent it all because of the cover!
I’m guessing that Peter Medak, being a tv director made this movie because it’s technically an HBO project, so I guess you could say that it’s a “tv movie”.. I didn’t know this until recently. One of my favourite horror movies of all time
Travis Simons but I'm sure it had a theatrical release
Frightfully Forgotten I’m sure it did I’m just assuming that it’s how he got the job. And by the way, I’d certainly pick up a copy of the Bluray that was released a week or so ago. The video and audio quality are absolutely amazing compared to the old DVD transfer.
Frightfully Forgotten sorry forgot to mention that the new bluray was made from a 4K transfer, so to miss out on this one would be criminal
Medak also directed the fine TV movie The Babysitter (1980) with William Shatner, John Houseman and Patty Duke she excelled in haunted house movies back then such as Amityville Horror 4 (1989) and the excellent Grave Secrets (1992) based on the Hilltop Drive haunting.
Your tagline nails my take on this spectacular flick!
What's great about Scott's performance and the fact that he was cast, is the role requires someone who will appear not to be frightened out of his wits by the haunting, but instead someone who is brave enough to try to unravel the mystery without being overcome by terror. You'd never believe General Patton would be afraid of unlocking the padlocked door in that closet and going into that attic room by himself! John Russell never runs out of the house screaming in fear - he's WAY too motivated to figure out what's going on. Joseph needed a guy like him to come along.
Totally agree 100% buddy!
A true classic mystery-ghost story, great film. I went through two vhs tapes of it, i watched so much. It just pulls you in, and keeps tingling at your spine. The story is great, the actors are phenominal, George.C Scott is fantastic in this, you feel real sympathy for his character ,and his loss, and lonlieness in this giant creepy place. Genuine terror without being horrific, it is a masterpiece, in my opinion, and thank you guys for doin' a proper job reviewing one of my all-time favorite films. Rock on, my friends. Bob.G
One of the best "ghost story" movies of all time. Thanks for checking out one of our older episodes!
@@FrightfullyForgotten Absoloutly, my friends.
@@FrightfullyForgotten Russel Hunter Who was One of The Writers claims that most of this Movie is based on A True Haunting Experience that happened to Him
@@jackgarrison8497 yeah read about that. Finding the well and everything.
@@FrightfullyForgotten The only odd thing is that Henry Treat Roger where The Mansion that The Changeling is based off of Henry Treat Roger never had any Children He did have A Couple of Nephews Who lived in His House One of The Cousins Died in World War I and apparently The Denver Colorado Library has no information to prove that Russel Hunter really ever rented The Henry Treat Roger House so was Russel Hunter Lying? Unfortunately Russel Hunter passed away on February 25th 1996 so We can't ask Him how much of The Story is Fake or Real which is pretty creepy
You guys have an awesome channel!! I just found it recently, you guys have great discussions, and you choose a lot of unique selections.
DustyOldMovies thanks for tuning in!!
I bet that this Movie inspired Koji Suzuki to write His Japanese Horror Book Series of The Ring which is where The Horror Movie that Naomi Watts started in
Based on a true story, though the real story is quite different. 2 stories actually. Though the real haunted house is gone today, it once stood across the street from Cheesman Park in Colorado. The other story involves Cheesman Park itself and the clearing of a cemetery where Cheesman Park stands today give or take a few graves.
In real Life I believe that Psychics are completely full of Crap
I love a good haunted house film...George C. Scott was a legend, late in his career at this time. A daring choice to star in this film, as so many fright films come across as hokey and ridiculous. This is an elegant film, about a man at full maturity, a respected composer/professor who loses EVERYTHING in a moment. Its a great film about loss, an unquiet spirit, terrible secrets, and the thin veil between this life, and beyond. A mesmerizing film filled with dread, hopelessness and redemption.
Totally agree 100%
George C Scott was also scene chewingy good in Exorcist 3
Fuck we love part 3
Great film but you should've mentioned how integral the ending is. That ending is the main thing that I remember and had a big impact. I get if you don't want spoilers but man, the ending makes this movie soooo good
Classic horror, great movie I’m surprised it didn’t get more publicity,I read somewhere Stephen King said it’s his favorite film
yeah even now years later it still seems to go under allot of people's radar
Best horror movie ever! Just watched it for the fifth time. Can’t get enough.
Yes we even claimed that this was one of the best horror movies we've covered in last week's q&a EP
George c scott was a great actor i miss him R.I.P
I’m going to watch that! I remember a great mystery/suspense horror w/Michelle Phyfe and Harrison Ford! It starts out w/new neighbors and Michelle thinks the husband killed the wife, then it turns into Michelle seeing things and finding out her loving husband cheated w/a student of his and ended up drowning her because she was gonna tell his wife!! Great movie
What was that movie called? What lies beneath or something like that?
You mean “What Lies Beneath”?
Loved this movie it was one of my dollar movies fimds qt my local thrift store! Great reiew!
How is this forgotten fellas? Everyone who knows anything about horror films from this peroid has seen and LOVE this film. Cool interview though
haha When we first started this channel we were more thinking of movies that would fall under the radar for casual horror fans, not so much the buffs! Cheers. Thanks for stopping by.
@@FrightfullyForgotten It got a lot more fans since the internet and that it was on AMC's 50 scariest films. Do one on The Other (1972) Burnt Offerings (1976) Ghost Story (1981).
The movie Stir of Echoes starring Kevin Swine, I mean Bacon, draws a lot of inspiration from the Changeling. Stir of Echoes is good within its own right
Remember being pleasantly surprised with Stir of Echoes.
Maybe Matheson incorporated some of the ideas lol
They have been talking about doing a remake for the last 10 years with Peter Medak returning to direct it. I read that he was presented with 3 different scripts and he rejected them all. There has been no more word about it since.
Why screw with perfection
Love that movie!
yeah it's great isn't it!?
My favorite scary movie of all time.
Don't you guys think that the seance scene is just like the one in The Others?!?!
Or "the Others" is like the one in this movie!? Haven't seen that one in ages, forget what that scene is like.

Thanks for this review. There was a lot of great new information that I had not been aware of. Awesome and scary movie.
You're very welcome, very glad you found it informative! ;)
This was a good one, glad to see it's getting some love. :D
Thanks! And yes it does need some love!
Love these videos guys. Thank you for giving some love to some lesser known/appreciated horror flicks.
I'm always curious about what you guys are drinking each episode. Being a horror nerd and a beer nerd I always wonder. Don't know if you could tell the audience without running afoul of UA-cam's terms but if you could I would appreciate knowing. And maybe I'm the only one who is curious.
Hey Matt! Thanks allot for tuning in! I think in the case of all the videos we're drinking home brew beer. Both Justin and i are avid home brewers. In this video we're drinking Justin's home made double IPA.
Thanks for letting me know. Home brewers as well. That's awesome.
Do you make beer as well?
Not yet. A friend and I are buying into it right now. We're planning to start with an imperial brown.
You're gonna get hooked my friend! it's a great and very rewarding hobby! You going to do a kit or all grain?
you guys are awesome
You two are a hoot. The one car garage was funny and true.
haha, thanks for stopping by Andy
It's a funny comment about the garage, but it kind of makes sense if you think about it. The house was built before automobiles were widespread, so either the garage was built much later as an add-on, or it's just something like a toolshed or storage room which was repurposed later as a garage for a car. (I know the house is just a facade for the film, but I'm trying to think of an in-universe explanation that makes sense).
Wow, virtually everywhere there is a ton of acclaim for this movie, am I the only one who found it boring and stopped watching it after about 30 minutes?
edit: I think I should say that maybe because of movies like paranormal activity may have contaminated my mind. Maybe its was too predictable for me or something.
It's totally a slow burn movie.
Yup and I think I have watched many movies that follow the same premise so I think its harder to appreciate it.
As a huge fan of the movie, I can understand why someone might turn it off. It does demand a lot of patience from you, but because you only saw 30 minutes of it, you didn't get to see any of the scenes that are truly horrifying. (IMO, anyway) so I would encourage you to try and watch it all the way through. You may not find it scary necessarily, but if nothing else it's just a really good murder-mystery story with some good drama.
@@FrightfullyForgotten GROAN Peter Medak also Directed Species II
Any chance on you doing 'The Gate'? :)
Good chance of that one being done in the future!! ;)
I've been meaning to do a video on it myself, I just haven't had the drive to do it of late but it's a great film!
TBH I've never seen this in its entirety. Always freaked me out growing up so sadly never finished it. I definitely need to change this
Well thats the sign of a good horror movie! So scary you can't finish it!
