Great video Barry.
Cheers James. In final preparation for the next marathon. Night out when Im back...!
@@OldManRunner Sounds good.
V3 no doubt
Great review
Set my over age 55 road marathon record in the Newton Distance Elite, 3:07, the opposite of a super shoe. I have since managed a 1:26 in the half marathon in the original Nike VaporFly. The VaporFly shaved about a minute on my half marathon time. Only use the AlphaFly for faster long runs on graded dirt or asphalt. The sensation of something so large on my feet isn’t for me, when the height of the VaporFly still seems extreme. But I’m open to the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro as an alternative and am practicing with it now, or will once the snow melts here in the foothills of Colorado!
Great running Troy. I know what you mean about the graded dirt or asphalt. On my long run in the Vaporfly I went across some dirt path in a park that was uneven and the narrow heel/high stack struggled to cope...great on fine pavement. Would be interested to find out how you get on in the Rebellions...
I love my alphaflys 2s. Got blisters at the beginning, modified them with new insoles - required some DIY (as the originals are glued in). The insoles I am currently using are from Pegasus 38s.
However, they survived me the winter - salty roads and excellent grip. I did 800 kms in them and the reliability is awesome. The first thing to fail is the flyknit - it has some small holes but the shoe itself is still bouncy and good.
I am going to buy a new pair (over the vaporfly) because I did not like vaporfly 2s (had two pairs). The vaporflys were too stiff for my taste and the best feeling is when you are doing a marathon (in the alphaflys) and your feet still feel awesome after 20kms so you can push even more. I really reccomend the alphaflys for those who are concerned with the overall longevity of their feet. Cheers.
Great to get such detailed feedback. Thanks!
I have the first alphas and also got blisters by the arch cuz it's so high and cuts in. Hoping that with time my feet will get used to it and settle in. The more I wear them the more I get used to the weird high arch feeling.
I have a similar experience, the alphafly 2s got me through ~7 months (4 snowy months, 3 rain/sunny) with everyday use
Running and sports were great with the shoes but the flyknit kept degrading and eventually the flyknit on my right shoe actually ripped when I was playing volleyball. Now there is a ~1cm diameter hole along the top right corner of the shoe (where the pinky toe sits). I probably have ~580km on the alphafly 2s.
Great video Barry. I've got the VF2 and AF1. I love the VF2 for shorter faster runs. I tried the AF2 for 16 and 19 mile runs in my training plan, but find them uncomfortable after wearing them for that long - I'm thinking it might be the arch. So, I'm seriously considering switching back to the asics metaspeed sky for Boston (I've run 2 marathons in them, so know they're good for me?. What would Eliud/Barry do? 😀
Cheers Chris! Next weeks video is essentially about using scientific data to pick between the Alphafly, Vaporfly and Metaspeed Sky. That and some home made testing...but more the sciency bit. Are you running Boston this April? Fantastic if you are. Eliud will be in Nike regardless. I am running in the Vaporfly2 in Rotterdam simply to test them, and me. I don't think I am in great condition, but last time I said that I hit a PB, so who knows. I am really choosing them because of the fact that I haven't run a marathon in them to date. If it was the other way around, and the shoe was on the other foot, or the other shoe was on the foot, I would be in the Metaspeed Sky/Sky+...cracking shoes
@OldManRunner thanks, yes I'm running Boston in 2.5 weeks (Aarrgghhh! 😉). I've got 2 more long runs of 21km to do before then, so I plan on taking my skys out for both of them and seeing how they feel, as I haven't laced them up since my virtual NYC track marathon last October! They've only got 150km in them, so they should be OK for 85km more. And if my mind is made up after the first long run, I'll save 21km in them and not run the second long run in them 😀. And I'll keep tuned for your next VF3 vs AF2 VS Sky video. Good luck in Rotterdam (I sense a Beautiful South soundtrack for that video!), when is race day?
@@Chris_Baily I now have the Beautiful South in my head… which is no bad thing. Rotterdam is the day before Boston. Did my 3 hour run in the rain on Sunday so 2 hours next Sunday and tapering. Got a twinge in my back two days ago… so out in the Invincible 2s for an easy run today… hope the back is not more than a feeling… best of luck in Boston!
Bravo Barry, you must’ve been doing some good training!!! Paris marathon next Sunday, I’m off to the Salon des coureurs this afternoon to pick up my bib, very excited!!! I will use the Alphafly V1, despite yes the huge thing of sitting back too far in them in the latter part of the marathon… they pull on my calf muscles enormously!!! BUT I still LOVE them and definitely feel I run further, faster with less effort with them… it’s palpable!!
Running fun is running fast! Have a great Paris run…!
Hmmmmmm, not quite there yet Barry!!!! A bit less slow I would say for myself !!😂😂
@@bev9708 good luck in Paris! You'll smash it! Is there anyway to follow you on live tracker? If you're not keen on posting your details here, please post here on the day to let us know how you went.
Have a great run in Paris! AF1 is also my favorite marathon race shoe. My PB is in AF1. Best wishes!
@@TolunayOrkun THANKS so much!!! 😁💪🏻🏃🏻♀️💪🏻
Hi - first off - great video and reasoning. I have run many marathons in the Vaporfly and I liked them overall for the bounciness besides the small sole footprint and deminished stability one get with a super light and bouncy shoe. Being greedy I tried the Alphafly for a marathon and it did not go well for me - the arch started hurting with each step after mile 10 and the roll motion is unnatural for me in addition to the forefoot slapping (I try to run silently over the pavement ...) which made me return the shoe - first time ever. It might be good for some people, but overall, I would recommend the Vaporfly over the Alphafly for everyday people ...
Great review from the World's best Uncle! I have the AFv1 and VFv1.
The consensus has been that Nike has not improved either model so I haven't 'upgraded'. For me the Alphafly for long controlled pace runs.. but I really don't like running in it, and the Vaporfly for all out speed - the shoe gives me more than any other super shoe I have
I’ve challenged the Jack 2.0 to a race in Battersea Park… so they should come in handy if I can get his size… The A1 suits me great for 1k to 5k. Longer and I’m a sack of mush. Looking forward to the V2 in Rotterdam. I’m not in super confident condition but really looking forward to just running it…and long testing the V2
@@OldManRunner Quite a few reviews have compared the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro to the AFv1
I'm really intrigued by it's novel design.
As one of my favourite shoe tubers I would love your thoughts on it especially Vs the Vaporfly and Alphafly
🙏
I have been intrigued to test it. I haven't read any reviews and wondered if it would work at my pace. Long story short I tried this morning but Mizuno are sold out in my size...but where there is a will... there are relatives fighting...will snag a pair somewhere
@@OldManRunner I've read every review and watched every video! 😳
Some are finding it great at a range of paces, others at more up tempo.. 7mins / mile and faster is when it seems to come alive!
I reckoned that with little or no heel it would not suit me at my marathon pace...but will definitely give it a whirl..
I tried the Alphafly 2% because I wanted to test what was up with them, (Running Chicago this year as my first marathon) and they felt great in my feet, however, I do feel that I still have a long way to go to actually run farther than 10k on that shoe, it is just to quick for me at the moment, seems like they want to go at a minimum 5:10 minute per Kilometer and stay there or faster. Maybe with a bit more training. But for now Keeping my SC Elite V3’s they seem to work at a variety of paces.
That seems to be pretty much my experience...wish I was quick enough for a full marathon at pace in them...
@@OldManRunnerwhich shoe will be the best for increasing the speed of running would you plz tell me here...!!! I couldn't perfectly understand by seeing your video. Thank you Sir.
@@RishoveJana If you land on the front of your foot and can keep that going for the time it takes to run the marathon pick the Alphafly 2. If you land on your mid foot or rear choose the Vaporfly 3.
thank you for the info...what is your target pace for Rotterdam? I will be running as well
I am going to head out at 5'30"per km and hope to stick to that the entire time. My PB is 03'53" and if I get near that I will be happy as I am planning to break it at a subsequent marathon,. Typically I go out too fast and I am going to use Rotterdam to try and reverse that strategy...but I say that every time! If you seem me say hello...
@@OldManRunner wow! I admire that you keep running. I will love to say hi, I will go a little bit faster (sub 2:50) and I’m looking for people that would like to run in a pack to help each other.
It's been a while since I ran that fast...and over a half marathon...but I do remember what it feels like...I should be in an Orange/Red On Running hat and a Red/Black Soar Running vest and of course the Vaporflys...hope to see you there and very best wishes for the time
I tried to get the alpha fly 1 but they were always sold out but last week got the alpha fly 2 which I do prefer also have the vapotfly 3 but training in my vapotfly 1 great shoes I almost never tried at the end of my run.
Hi Barry, on Saturday & Sunday I will be running Cherry Blossom 5k and 10-mile race at Washington, DC. Before my injury I was planning to run them in Takumi Sen 8 (TS8) and Vaporfly 2 (VF2) respectively but with injury I looked at what shoes I would be comfortable for the two races. I ended up with VF2 and Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 (EP3). I even considered running both in EP3 but I want to give my VF2 a bit more use.
Other shoes I considered are as follows: NB RC Elite v2 (RCE2), Adidas Adios Pro 3 (AP3) and Alphafly 1 (AF1). Best bounce is in AF1, followed by EP3 and yes as you said, AF requires landing close to pods, otherwise it feels like negative drop shoe and while it worked very well for my last 2 marathons, I couldn't risk this time around. I am slower as I am recovering from injury, and I wanted to complete the races in decent shape. I'll let you know how the races has gone when I return. Take care!
Racing Saturday band Sunday! Best wishes with both. I am up to my neck in an academic report that compares carbon plate shoes...trying to make sense of it for next weeks video....I am enjoying tempo and stride days in my Endorphin Pro 3's and hope at some stage to get some more speed this year to try for a 5k PB...when my Takumi Sen 8's might get another outing...hoping to do a 1k all out race in a couple of weeks...depending on the Jack 2.0 pitching up...
@@OldManRunner I ran both races, yay! On a rainy Saturday, ran 5k in 27:03 and on a cold and windy sunday the 10 mile in 1:29:40. Given I have not done much running recently due to my injury, I am pretty satisfied with both results. It was 50th anniversary of Cherry Blossom Race and on the 10-mile course part of the course was through a road with blossoming cherry trees on either side. It was nice to see and experience that.
@@TolunayOrkun Brilliant stuff. Back to back racing is impressive. I love Cherry Blossoms...will add the races to my bucket list...
Great video Barry. You bought me the alphafly 2s as I am your favourite nephew. I ran the Rome marathon in 3 hours and 31 minutes in them. Could be a good idea to buy me the vaporflys 3s and see which marathon I run faster. Just an idea for a good video 😉
Great idea indeed!
And what a run in Rome Barry's favourite nephew!

Jack. I woke up in the middle of the the night and I read your comment and I thought…am I dreaming? But then I realised no… you were dreaming. But as it happens I remembered that I was drinking a Norwegian beer before bed called Lucky Jack…so size 10?
@@OldManRunner Wish I had an uncle like you Barry 😊
@@OldManRunner if you're looking to adopt an older nephew Down Under - I'm available and happen to be US10 : - ) ... or do I need to run the Barry's nephew qualifier of a 3:31 mara first?
Eliud will be running Boston in Alphafly 3.
He is always one step ahead :)
Unlikely, usually runs in a prototype and looking at NN he likes cushioning.
#6 😢
Got the first alpha Flys and man they cut in on the arch. Really high on the arch, got used to it after a while. But they're super bouncy.
I meant to mention the high arch in the video. I really notice it in the Alphafly 2's. Not uncomfortable for me though.
Gonna stick to the Endorphins Pro 3 for races.
Sooo I want to buy either VF3 or AF2. I have my first of 3 marathons in a month. Looking to improve on a time of 2:52 set in the VF2. Is there a pace that the AF has the advantage over VF and if there is, approximately what is it?
Hello Trevor. I know that there is a definitive answer. If there was, then front Nike Runners in a Marathon would all be in Alphafly 2's and typically there is a mix of AF and VF's. Having said that, Kipchoge broke the World record in the AF2. I find they work for me if I can keep on my forefoot and I can only do that on short runs. I think that something in peoples individual mechanics mean that if they work for you, they really work for you and it takes a certain type of forefoot striking to gain advantage. I will be looking to see if Kipchoge runs on Monday in Boston in an AF2, VF3 or an AF3 prototype. If it's the VF3 it might tell me something about the course and the lightness of the shoe being an advantage. Either way I think you should try the AF2's at some stage...If you get them through the Nike app and sign up for their emails (which you can cancel at any stage) then you can run in the shoe for a considerable length of time and return them if they don't suit for a full refund. And they regularly offer discounts, even on AF and VF shoes...
Vaporfly for shorter distances up to a Half Marathon, the Alphafly longer distances from a Half to a Marathon. The Alphas much more softer and bouncy both shoes are amazing.
Alphafly not easy to put on is an understatement. It's a royal pain in the ar$e. Nonetheless I qualified for Boston in them so I'll live with it.
Result!
BRAVO on qualifying!!! The Alphaflys slide on way more easily with some nice thin slippery Rockay Agile Ultra Light socks, but I wouldn’t use those socks for a marathon, just training.
@@bev9708 Socks are super critical. I wore the Saysky pair and they slipped on and in nicely. Will run Rotterdam in On mid socks as they are shorter… race proven… and I think they will go with my outfit… but you knew that!
@@OldManRunner CLEARLY they must go with your outfit!!!! We all certainly run better colour- coordinated!!!! 😁
@@bev9708 Thank you Bev
Is the V3 softer than the v2? I find the V2s quite hard.
I don't have the V2. I don't find the V3 hard, but I don't typically mind firm shoes. Zoom X is very soft and I would be very surprised if the plate as any more stiff in the V3
I tried the Alphafly V2 In the shop but for the right lock down I need to go half a size down but then I am a bit short in the length.. But I can't run in the Alphafly V1 because I feel like it's negative drop (heel striker) but in the shop the Alphafly V2 felt very nice. No negative drop.. I am size 43 in the Alphafly V1 but 43 in Alphafly V2 was huge (WIDE & LONG) so half a size down was OK.
The Alphafly V3 is about to be released...I am keeping my eye out. Will try and test the VO i can get out of them when they arise...
@@OldManRunner Any idea when Alphafly V3 will be out? V2 is still €300..
@@i.p2088 July according to rumours…
After viewing a dozen or so reviews, I have decided the AF2 is not for me. Neither is the Saucony Elite. I am just going to stick with the VF2 for races and the Pro 3 for long and fast training runs.
I have really been enjoying the Pro 3 for fast training runs, haven't tried the Elite
I’m an old man runner too 68, 45 miles/ week only shoe that’s amazing for me with arthritic knees is alphafly 1 can’t find anything comparable need serious help I burned out 3 pair.
What part of the shoes wore out first? I have not found any of my carbon plate shoes to be long lasting, but they are not designed to. The Brooks Hyperion Tempo has the best wear of any of my shoes. And is nice to run in.
@@OldManRunner got 700 miles on my Alphafly, not sure how people destroy them so quickly😄
@@davidh5429 I am not fleet footed… I think that’s what’s why I don’t get the wear out of them that most people do…700 miles is great going on them…
Was not entirely clear in the video but do you mean that the VF3 is less loud/noisy(in terms of sound not color) than the VF2 and AF2?
Apologies Wes. All my Zoom X shoes make noise....but the Alphafly 1 and 2 make so much more because of the footpods. To the point where I am self conscious running in them...
@@OldManRunner A quiet shoe is something I prefer as well...being conscious about the noise is dreadful:-) Would you say that the Endorphin Pro 3 is more quiet compared to the VF3?
@Wes W I think so… certainly no worse...will check later!
So I ran up and down in both past with my friend Liam who was listening. The Endorphin Pro 3 sounds like a regular shoe. Nothing noticeable. The Vaporfly 3 is definitely noisier… but nothing like as noisy as the Alphafly 2….
@@OldManRunner great information, really appreciate you tested this out! Thanks a lot!
I tried the Alphafly V2 in the shop yesterday. I have the V1 in 43. V2 is at least a half size bigger.. Maybe a full size ❓ also.. I can't run in the Alphafly V1. I feel like I am sinking backwards and need to adjust my landing to the forefoot.. This kills my Achilles Tendon and limit the use to short fast runs. To my surprise. 👍🏻 The Alphafly V2 felt like a normal drop shoe and at least something I can run in.. Any chance ❓.. I actually added heel inserts in the V1 to correct the drop..
I meant to ask before, how did the Alphafly 1 feel when ypu added in the inserts?
@@OldManRunner from memory you also used inserts with Alphafly 1s? 4mm, 6mm, 8mm? Did you either of you use anything specific to fix them in place?
@@bartekzielinski1645I would be interested in this testing.. the drop on the AFv1 almost feels -ve to me
Don't like it at all.. prefer 8-10mm drop
@@bartekzielinski1645 I popped the inserts from my CIMALP 864’s in them in for fun but didn’t do any real testing… though I am interested to hear how I.P. got on with them. I looked for inserts in the internet but never got a set that I thought would work. I like the Alphafly 1 so with inserts they might be cheap and fast…
@@lifephorce Alpha 1s are a 4mm drop are they not? So a 4mm or 6mm insert would do the trick. I like Alpha 1s but 8-10mm drop sounds enticing! I'm in Aus, someone here suggested Formthotic heel raises, will give them a try.
is VF3 worth the cost to upgrade from VF2?
I don't really know as I dont have the VF2. I did notice that a lot of the runners in Paris Marathon were running in the VF2 and none in the VF3. I am going to keep a look out on TV to see who is wearing what at the pointy end of the Boston Marathon which might help answer....
The alphafly version 1 seems to be better than version 2
Returned Alphafly 2 after only 2 runs. Gave me huge blisters on both feet but not only that, it has become more stable and not as bouncy as v1 that I loved. Nike are going in the opposite direction
Sorry you had a bad experience in them. It's funny but Nike seems to have made the Invincible and Alphafly more stable...which puts a lot of people off. I am fine with it, but wonder what the overall view is...
That’s why I went with a second pair of the Alphafly V1 and Invincible Run V2 instead, which I haven’t even used yet as my first pairs are holding up really really well… but then shoes seem to last way longer for me than for most runners, certainly WAY WAY more than Barry here!!!😂😂

How is the width versus Altra carbon?
in my size UK12 USM13 in each nut EU48 in the Altra and EU47.5 in the Nike...Forefoot the AF@ is wider by 10mm and in the rear wider by 14mm
@@OldManRunner are you saying the Nike is wider than the Altra Carbon?
Yes. In the midsole/outsole. It doesn't feel any wider inside. The sides of the Altra go down almost vertically whereas the Alphafly 2 splay outwards.
@@OldManRunner Could you compare the Altra Carbon with the NIKE AF? Like insoles width and shape?
The AF insole is not removable, which makes measurements difficult.. The Altra insole is removable. When I take the insole out of the AF and lay it in the AF on top of the insole in the AF they are a good match. There is not a lot of AF insole extending beyond the Altra, certainly nothing significant. The insole in the Invincible 3 is removable and the edge shape and size is nearly identical to the Altra. The main difference is that the Nike insole is quite contoured wheres the Altra is nearly flat. The Altra is 105mm wide in the forefoot and 69mm in the rear. Hope this helps

Better to wait for alphafly 3 and decide...
I wonder when they will come out. The Alphafly 3 came out in summer 2022 and Kipchoge ran Berlin and set the record in September 2022...my guess is that it will be summer 2024, but its only a guess...
@@OldManRunner I think he will use it on Boston this year as NN released a video of him training with that...
@@shankart7697 Must have a look. It would be really exciting to see what changes they make for the next version
