Just came across your videos now and I already love them. You have a wealth of knowledge with grass and I have actually been struggling with my grass at home. I now think I have found the problem thanks to you.
Meanwhile, looking at 18 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday morning...you help us get through the blues of winter bro! Great info and awesome video as always!
100 degrees and I have 2 feet of snow coming starting at 4 pm today, followed by a high of 6 degrees on Monday low of -12. I will take 100 all day right now! Great Vid by the way! Chad Upstate NY
I’ve just ordered a Hoselink System and should be here on Monday....Happy Watering In This Queensland Weather, I’m so glad you Recommend them Ben, Good To know about the sprinkler....Happy Weekend...😊😊
We had a week long heatwave here in Sydney and the lawn is looking a bit stressed and dry and have not had any rain or done any watering yet. Going to get out there tomorrow and give a trim, water and some wetting agent and seaweed. I applied some pgr a week ago for the first time at the lowest rate and am seeing a small slow down in growth but will start to up the dose next time around for the full effect.
Enjoyed the video! I should’ve hand watered a section of my lawn last year, and it seemed like I could never catch up. Section ended up drying out beyond repair!!
I use a Gardena Aquazoom oscillating sprinkler for the front lawn. It has both width and arc control. It covers the area of lawn I have well enough and also the flower borders up to the eaves of the house front. I have a section of lawn that has a slope & is adjacent to a concrete driveway & which tends to dry out more than other lawn sections, especially in summer with the warmer, longer days - it needs extra watering definitely. The lawn is getting a deep watering twice a week for about just over an hour at a time between hours of 5.30 am and 8.00 am. During dry spells I mow the lawn at a higher setting than normal and mow less frequently as the grass plants are probably heat stressed enough without the added stress of frequent cutting. I've added a wetting agent to the section as well to see if that helps. The Hunter Matched Precipitation (MP) Rotators & controller irrigation system would be a nice feature to have but I don't need one for this lawn - maybe the next. Soil drainage is going to be a consideration in how much water the lawn requires. If the soil is compacted or heavy the water can simply run off or pool - don't want that. Soil macro pore spaces are important for water penetration & mobility. In Victoria we get flash flooding during the Summer - a short, heavy down poor then back to humidity then dryness. Most of the water runs quickly off the lawn and doesn't sufficiently penetrate the soil surface. My neighbours think the lawns have had a good watering for the week when most likely they haven't. They give me cynical looks when I have the water sprinklers running the morning following a short, heavy downpour. Victorians are expert at drying out & killing their lawns - close mowing, no irrigation & cars parked all over their front lawns.
+1 for the aquazoom. +1 for compacted soil. I hired a lawn corer last year for my heavy clay lawn. Then top dressed it with very sandy loam. My sloping lawn looks much much better this summer and uses far less water as there is 80% less run off and the moisture get to the roots far easier
@@volvogt21 I've been garden fork tining, coring and topdressing the section for a couple of years now. It's certainly improved but there is still a need for a fix. I haven't tried mixing peat into the topdressing - I've heard that can improve soil moisture retention.
@@tertia0011 I was doing the same and got tired of the hard work for little result. I hired the corer and made a big mess. Then top dressed the lawn and filled in all the 60mm holes with sand. I used to have to water my front lawn so slowly hoping some of the water would be absorbed as it is on a fair slope. Afterwards I watered the lawn for 30 min and zero water ran down the footpath. None of the dead spots have appeared this summer that I used to put down to cockchafer beetles when it was really zero water getting to the roots.
My mate had two on his farm. Sad part is the springs rusted out after about 10 years but they were great until then. May have had something to do with his bore water.
Considering the shape of your back yard you might like to use a traveling revolving tractor type sprinkler. In the US we have quite a costly brand that will last for generations branded National Walking Sprinkler. They invented the traveling sprinkler. The most popular traveling sprinkler in the US is made by LR Nelson and there are others by Orbit and Melnor as well. I’m not sure if these brands are available where you live but I believe that the Pope traveler might be. One tip in order to get good results with them is to be certain to lay the hose out with a gradual right angle turn at each end of the laid out path so that both sides of the spray pattern water the boarders. If a straight line is laid out the two ends would only receive half of the intended dosage. I know that in the case of Nelson and Orbit there are rebuild kits for the gearboxes when needed. In the US Melnor handles warranty matters by replacing the unit. National Walking Sprinkler model’s have great parts availability. Rebuild kits are available for all of their models and all metal gearing is standard in their best model and available at point of sale or with their rebuild kits when needed. The largest model with metal gearing states that it will pull up to 300’ of hose where the other models claim 200’ When I was young we had a model from Melnor named the Roll ‘n Reel. It rolled the hose up automatically while traveling and worked great. Laying the hose out was as easy as pushing a stroller but they required frequent rebuilds and are no longer made. m.ua-cam.com/video/V6cN_9kq3bQ/v-deo.html m.ua-cam.com/video/DeBVo_Im0iQ/v-deo.html
Got some heat stress on back lawn ran out of plant dr wetting agent mixed dishwashing liquid with plant dr products seems to be working ok with getting moisture back into the lawn
I live on a 880m2 block mate is it really necessary to buy a in ground irrigation system? Am I able just to get a hoselink and do it after work during the dry season? And or a sprinkler and move it around each day to different areas? Just looking for the most budget option. I live in NQ.
It was 45C in Mt Beauty last Wednesday, 38C today. I water with an impact sprinkler that puts out heaps water. More worried about bush fires around here than watering at the moment.
Yo mate what up? At what point do you recommend changing the watering schedule for a new seeded lawn? Is transition from 4 times a day wait for germination to 2-3 times a week?
Great product, great review but unfortunately I have to return mine as stated in your review, not suitable for long narrow / down the side of house. Water goes over neighbours fence. There are cheaper sprinklers that have a better range adjustment 😢 thanks for the video 😊
What're your thoughts on using a water gauge to decide when you need to water your lawn? Or better just to stick to a regular schedule of twice a week?
In WA, bore users get 3 watering days instead of 2 for tap users. Do I aim for 13mm each watering day for a warm grass? I don't want to forego my third day as the setup waters both lawn and garden beds.
Super curious about drought watering. We are on level 3 restrictions in orange which means no sprinklers or irrigation, unless you have your own tank. I’m hose watering every other day. Since I can’t do deep watering I’m watering more frequently. Is this ok?
Every used/seen the product "hydretain"...? Any thoughts? Thanks for the great video man, I love seeing you're awesome lawn when we are in the dead of winter here. Keeps the spirits up! 😉
Great video Ben, thanks! I have a dumb question........ We have a buffalo lawn in Sydney and we need 13mm water per week which is roughly 56mm per month. When I check my local weather observatory www.bom.gov.au/jsp/ncc/cdio/weatherData/av?p_nccObsCode=139&p_display_type=dataFile&p_startYear=&p_c=&p_stn_num=066052 I see that during most months there is already 56mm of rainfall. Does that mean I could just check local rainfall (www.bom.gov.au/jsp/ncc/cdio/weatherData/av?p_display_type=dailyDataFile&p_nccObsCode=136&p_stn_num=066052&p_c=-872612873&p_startYear=2020) and only water when there is less than 13mm rainfall during the previous 7 days?

Interested to hear the answer to this. I have the same problem. I either pull the runners up by hand or spray them with roundup. It's a never ending battle though.
Kikuyu has both surface runners (stolons) and subsurface runners (rhizomes). The plant spreads by means of both and can regrow from small sections of rhizome if not completely removed. You can spot paint the lawn with Roundup or inject the kikuyu runners with it. If the infestation is severe - kill off the whole the lawn. Nuke it from space is the only way to be sure.

We had 1 42 degree day where i live and a patch completely went brown even though i watered that morning. Turns out i had hydrophobic soil. Question is will it come back??
Bonus points to Ben for converting measurements to imperial and fahrenheit. But I still do not understand why he calls his lawn a yard instead of a meter? 🤔
Hey mate I was just wondering how much water your tap is putting out at the end of your hose. I got a 30m hoselink for Christmas and didn't even think of the pressure drop and now my bunnings sprinkler just can't handle the distance it used to give. I was looking a Bunnings impact but that hoselink one would be perfect for my yard.
Hey mate! I have a bit of pressure. Not crazy amounts but from memory to fill up a 10L bucket it takes around 16 seconds. I think! I did it so long ago I could be wrong
If you know how much water (off the meter) it is putting out while irrigating... and the area... is this an accurate way of measuring millimetres?? I read that 1litre/square m = 1 mm. So for my area (85sqm) at 30l/hr. (30/85)x60=21.2mm/hr on my system. Is this a correct and accurate method?
thanks @@LawnTips. yes I definitely get the millimetres thing. Just seeing if there is a conversion or rule of thumb doing it the other way. Great videos btw. I have village green out the front so your Kikuyu videos are great inspiration. Helpful that you are doing some different grasses as well.

I don't mean to question your orientation mate but, why not turn the sprinkler 90° down the side section, and point it straight up? Haha, just a thought 😋
Good video, I think UA-cam is stalking me tho cause I only just got permission from my gf to tear up her entire front yard and replace most of it during winter. So I thought I would ask, I noticed you didn't mention anything about underground watering systems, are they generally not recommended? I was going to lay two zones (one lawn, one garden) under the new garden and most likely Buffalo lawn. Was trying to hide the watering due to some neighbours being pains in the butt.
i always thought it's not a good idea to water the lawn in the day time specifically if it's sunny, the water droplets can act as magnifying glasses and burn the lawn
Lawn Tips yup... wrote two... a messed up one and this one... first... but I don’t need the glory... give it to trev... he wants to talk about your hose....
Hmmmm. Im pretty sure you cant just measure any size container for mils of water with a ruler. If you did you would have to pour it into a proper rain gauge and read off the mls
You can as long as the side walls are straight up. Bigger container will collect more water but will then take more water till it gets to the same mm reading as a smaller container👍
Couldn’t you have turned the sprinkler lengthwise like the side yard and changed the setting so it didn’t fully oscillate in either direction?
Haha probably 😂
Now I feel a little silly
It’s all good, everyone makes mistakes. Must’ve been the heat. 🥵 Thanks for another fun vid.

i always thought it's not a good idea to water the lawn in the day time specifically if it's sunny, the water droplets can act as magnifying glasses and burn the lawn
Do I still need to water my astro turf?
I dare you to. See what happens
saw you on Erik anders lang insta stories playing guitar
Did you? Haha, funny as. I love his content
Great video! Is it abnormally hot there right now?

Yep, it’s sure is! Never gets this hot in Orange
you can restrict the spread by chucking some tape over more holes you don't want!
Is your water bill like a billion dollars a quarter?

Lawn Tips yup... wrote two... a messed up one and this one... first... but I don’t need the glory... give it to trev... he wants to talk about your hose....
You should buy one Jeremy , on hoselink.com.au and experience a great Australian product. 😁
Lawns so nice I thought it was turf 😂
@@nexusw4274 thanks.
