But "Notorious" is even better, and should take the crown for the 80s, and to me they've matched that amazing feat twice since in separate decades. So not an 80s act only and while "Rio" is amazing, it's not the top. That's just the easy thing to say.
This has to be one of the most respectful reviews I've ever watched. It is good to be able to openly give constructive criticism without fearing that someone out there will be offended. From all of the interviews that I have seen throughout the years, I know that the band members are humble enough to take their fan's opinions and have learned and grown from them in a positive way.
Notorious has always been my favourite Duran album, and actually it was THE reason I had decided to learn english back in 1985 when I was a teenager, because I was dying to to be able to sing along the lyrics and I didn't know how. I am DD fan yes, not a very dedicated one, I have skipped many Duran Duran albums, have never listened to Thank you, Medazzaland, and I only half listened to The Wedding Album. Paper Gods was amazing at first but I think it has aged not well. I love Duran Duran the debut, rio, seven and the ragged, arena- which was my first duran duran album- big thing, all you need is now, liberty, astronaut, i agree it is more than how it was received, and as for pop trash, not very good but not that bad either. But Notorios is just , i believe, the most accomplished duran duran album, and i think it is an album the band has been trying to get back to, in terms of sound, it is such a gem and also a very underrated album Thank you for the video.
Wow, Cem, that's is so great that you found Duran Duran as a nice segway to learning English! It just goes to show that talent in the music area knows no boundaries.
1) 7 & The Ragged Tiger - What melodies and everything else have held up so well ! 2) Notorious - Funky Grooves and sublime arrangements! 3) Rio - Sonic Perfection ! 4) Duran 81- Prob the best debut Pop album ever! 5) Astronaut - The first 4 songs are pure heaven ! 6) Liberty - Love the drums and guitars here! Plus it has ' My Antarctica' Wow! 7) Wedding Album - Didn't age too well. ' Ordinary World' is still a masterpiece 8) Thank You - It's not as bad as they say! Really good work on the covers here! 9) Arena- Well, I used to play this cassette to death! Love the inclusion of ' Girls on Film' and ' Rio' in the Remastered re release. 10) All You Need Is Now- Tried to hard to be Rio Pt2. 11) Big Thing- Hmmmm...Big misstep here , but 'Land' is such a pop songwriting masterpiece too. Great guitar work too 12) Red Carpet Massacre- Timbaland! nuff said! 13) Medazzaland - Still better than Pop Trash! Nice electronic buzz all over ...' Electric Barbarella and Out of My Mind are great songs though! 14) Paper Gods- Horrific album cover, but personally it just doesn't gel 15) Pop Trash - Pop Trash.
Obviously lifelong Duran fans are going to disagree on some but THANK YOU for ranking Notorious so highly - I LOVE that album. The B side of Big Thing is a masterpiece.
Pop Trash is one of their best. It's got some great rock songs on it. You like the songs I hate and you hate all the songs I love... We'd never get along. Here's my list 1 - 14 01. Rio 02. Duran Duran 03. The Wedding Album 04. Seven and the Ragged Tiger 05. Medazzaland 06. Notorious 07. Pop Trash 08. Paper Gods 09. Big Thing 10. All You Need Is Now 11. Red Carpet Massacre 12. Astronaut 13. Thank You 14. Liberty
I’m really enjoying your channel. I only discovered it today after listening to the new single. Strange how the UA-cam algorithm works as I’ve been a Duran Duran fan since the early 80s. Your ranking is very interesting. Mine would look quite a bit different so one of these days I’ll put my rankings in the comments just for comparison sake.
I’ve had my channel for a little bit over a year and I’ve been waiting for UA-cam to give me a break and actually push my video out to the people who want to see it. It just takes time but I’m glad you’re here now.
5 Seven and the Ragged Tiger. Your second pronunciation is the right one from what I remember. Very special album for me. Became a big Duranie during the release of this album. My first concert. Very unique sounds on this album!
I like First Impression and My Anarctica from Liberty. I think they were trying new sounds on that album. I also love DD's cover of Zeppelin's Thank You. Simon sings and captures the emotion of the song so well. People hate on Astronaut but I like it. To me the most forgettable album is Medazzaland. You are spot on on Red Carpet Massacre. I can't stand that album. I can never listen to it all the way through. Thanks for the countdown and the memories.
Thanks for the ranking, brings back memory's! Don't realy have a favorite album. All of them are just part of my life and history. I did not listened to Duran Duran the last years, but youre video's brought them back in my life. Thank You!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on each album. I think my list is quite similar: Here's mine 1. Duran Duran (1981); 2. Rio (1982); 3 Seven and the Ragged Tiger (1983); 4 Astronaut (2004) 5. Notorious (1986) 6. Liberty (1990) 7. Big Thing (1987) 8. Red Carpet Massacre (2007) 9. Thank You (1995) 10. Meddazaland (1997) 11. The Wedding Album (1993) 12. All You Need is Now (2010) 13. Paper Gods (2015) 14. Pop Trash (2000). I think we mostly differ on Astronaut v All You Need is Now! I think Andy Taylor brought along a songwriting craft that the band miss when he is not around. The last five tracks on that album from Finest Hour to Still Breathing, are possibly the best stretch of 5 songs across all the albums.
Having been a fan since April 1981 I have to rank my top 5 as follows:- 1. Duran Duran (1st album), perfect production with some great songs. 2. Notorious, an album they had to make after the side projects, a brilliant combination of influences from those projects. 3. Astronaut, the original 5 back together making great songs again. 4. Rio, a superb 2nd album that gave them a career, some songs written during the early days that weren't ready for the 1st album. I do prefer the single version of My own way. 5. Wedding Album, features probably one of their best songs Ordinary World but oozes quality right thru. The Power Station album would sit 2nd if included. A super group of brilliant funk/rock. The worst would be Pop Trash, no bass player or drummer on this and it shows, weak songs too, could've been better with live bass/drums. Some of my other favourite tracks are :- Liberty Too late Marlene Safe The Valley 2 great songs that should've been on albums are Late Bar and Beautiful colours.
I used to collect import pressings of any Duran Duran Albums, Singles and Mixes. Still have them along with an early Bootleg from their first appearance in Los Angeles at the Greek Theater.
My favority 1 ( notorious ) 2 ( rio ) 3 ( Duran Duran ) 4 ( The wendding álbum ) 5 ( big thing ) 6 ( astronaut ) 7 ( liberty ) 8 ( seven and The ragged Tiger ) 9 ( red carpet massacre ) 10 ( thank You ) 11 ( pop trash ) 12 ( paper gods ) 13 ( ALL You need is now ) 14 ( medazzaland ) thanks Brasil , rio de janeiro !!!!
Red Carpet Massacre is the reason they lost guitarist Andy Taylor when they went so commercial he quit. They did not recover until 2015's Paper Gods with Pressure Off with their old collaborator, Nile Rogers. Looking forward to this October 21 when Future Past comes out as I have hopes for another good album. They have been up and down since 2000. I do like Astronaut, even saw them perform in Times Square at ABC back in the day.
I'm a big fan of Notorious too! What a fun album! Saw them live back them too. And we all agree Rio is their best. New Religion, Save a Prayer... Wow!!!! ❤️ Really enjoyed your video...thanks! Made me want to listen to some of these albums again.
My favorite album is Big Thing. I love every song on there especially Big Thing and I Don't Want Your Love. Second, Notorious, 3rd Rio, 4th Seven And the Ragged Tiger, 5th The Wedding Album, 6th Astronaut, 7th Paper Gods, 8th AYNIN, 9th Liberty, 10th Duran Duran the first one not the wedding album. My top 10 albums...
Thanks RMM ... I was actually in Toronto when the album came out (I was 17), but I bought the import released on Harvest which still had the same track list as the original UK release and the same photo of them by the 40's automobile.
I loooooooooooooooove Pop Trash. But hey, we all have our own opinions. Curious to see how you rank Future Past. Thanks for the great work. Great job!!
I agree with you Matt. Pop Trash, for me, is as good as any of their albums, and better than almost all of them. They should never have let Warren C go, because their best albums are the ones he featured on such as Liberty.
me too, i love pop trash. maybe a couple thats not so good but the rest, brilliant, melodic, atmospheric. the only reason it didn't do well sales-wise was because of poor promotion
My Duran Duran Top 10 1 Notorious 2 Rio 3 Astronaut 4 Paper Gods 5 All you need is now 6 Liberty 7 Big Thing 8 Seven and the ragged tiger 9 Red carpet massacre 10 Duran Duran
I just became a DD fan a year ago (started October 2019) and I love them. My most favorite album from them is Notorious (even though Rio is the album that made me became their fan). I agree with you when it comes to their album All You Need Is Now. Fantastic album they ever made in 21st Century.
I almost completely agree with you. The only thing I would change is swap “Big Thing” and “Seven and the Ragged Tiger”. Your top three picks, for me could be interchangeable depending on my mood. Mood is a major influence on the order I would put their albums. Your top 10 could all be rearranged depending on my mood. However, I totally agree with 11 - 14. Those are my least favorite no matter what my mood. I do not own “Pop Trash” or “Medazzleland” and it’s a long story as to why I don’t own them. I want them but a new copy is hard to find for a reasonable price. I’ve been a fan since 1982.
I remember around 2012 listening to the Notorious album, probably hadn't listened to it since it came out, and wow, I got so much more out of it hearing it as an adult vs as a teen. Definitely in my top 5 album of theirs now.
My personal favorites: 1) All you need is Now 2) Rio 3) Seven and the Ragged Tiger 4) Astronaut 5) Paper Gods 6) Wedding Album 7) Notorious 8) Duran Duran 9) Medazzaland 10) Big Thing 11) Thank You 12) Liberty 13) Red Carpet Massacre 14) Pop Trash.
That’s funny, I really like Pop Trash and Red Carpet!! 😮 I totally agree with you on Astronaut. My least fave is Paper Gods. My top 3 are: 3. Notorious, 2. Big Thing, 1. Rio
Controversial but here we go : 1 : Rio 2 : Duran 81 3 : So Red The Rose (Don't start!) 4 : Notorious 5 : 33 1/3 (Again .. shhh) That's it - All of these albums are pure perfection and it's a testament to the band that they can commission 5 absolute classic albums in their career. It''s about the same as U2 (5 Great albums). Honourable mentions to : Seven & The Ragged Tiger, Big Thing & Medazzaland (Purely for "Got To Get You Out Of My Mind" which is beautiful) and Wedding for the two big singles but these 4 albums are patchy with moments of sheer brilliance. My top 5 are albums I can listen to straight through. So Red The Rose should have been the follow up to SATRT .. I guess it was in a way !
In tastes and colors nobody can discuss! You may like what you wish sir, but without a doubt DURAN DURAN marked an era, they have been on the scene for more than forty years now and have been able to evolve throughout time, not many can do so! Stylish, song writers, music players, pioneers in many areas! Talented men and band! Greetings from South America!!
There is logic to your ranking, and everyone has their personal preferences. I'm glad that Notorious gets such a huge nod of approval, as it is a perfect album. The misplaced one to me is Astronaut, as it should rank much higher. I am baffled that your list of Astronaut's quality songs does not include "Still Breathing," a track that I would think should have qualified for your top 5 most haunting Duran Duran tracks. If you are a fan of "Do You Believe in Shame?" from the appropriately enough ranked Big Thing album, as you clearly are, then "Still Breathing" should somehow enter into your thought process, as the emotions evoked by the lyrics and melodies are similar. "Do You Believe in Shame?" is about the memory that will not die, and "Still Breathing" is about vanquishing the memory that is too strong to deal with ever again. "Now, I know this shattered feeling: trampled, but still breathing."--Oh my God. Wow. "Still Breathing" forces one to consider putting Astronaut ahead of some of the 80s albums, which is otherwise very difficult to do.
I do like the song still breathing but I can definitely tell you that one song is not enough to make a lot of difference on a ranking up an album. I’ll look at the entire album including how it starts, the transitions between songs, quality of the songs, the tempo of the album in many other ways. Where I understand that these two songs have similar meanings I don’t find them to have similar sounds. I don’t pay attention to lyrics and that is on purpose. I find the voice to be an instrument and that is what I’m looking at or listening to but if I start paying attention to what people are saying there are probably a lot of bands I won’t listen to anymore. LOL
I have one of the rarest collections of the DD catalog and they are notorious (no pun intended) for leaving off b sides or non album tracks. Fallen Angel from the Wedding Album, Beautiful Colours, Secret Oktober, etc. Arcadia So Red the Rose is the BEST album DD never made. My absolute favorite is Liberty. The inner sleeve is awesome. Serious is the best song they ever did. My Antarctica is always forgotten probably their best ballad. Warren is the best guitarist. Dom solid too
Given the longivety of the band, it's apparent how british, american and generations differ on their tastes. Note that the a-side of the Rio album was remixed for the US- market, and the Notorious album was the 1st one that wasn't a megaseller at the time. Amazing how they got away with some of their stuff indeed. You just got to love them, i guess. 💓👍🇧🇪🇵🇷☀️
Arcadia’s “So Red The Rose” is still my all time favorite album . There is something inherently perfect about its make up. I think it made all the difference in the arrangement of tracks on the “Notorious” album. While I love Duran and am a life long DURANIE.. my one criticism is that their albums are great , and then you have 1 song that either doesn’t fit .. or seems to be in the wrong place between songs and it throws you out of the mood. The two above don’t have that issue. But it happens on “Big Thing” with “Drug”.. It should not have been after “Too Late Marlene “!
Hi Brian, I do like Duran Duran's first three albums but after that I never gave them much attention. I agree that Rio is a fantastic album but I also really like Seven & The Ragged (pronounced "Rag" - "ged") Tiger with I Take The Dice possibly being my favourite song from it. This video was helpful and I like your honesty in that you don't rate every single song from every single album.
Richard McCook Hey Richard I appreciate your comment but I think I need to clarify myself. After you said that I said I don’t rate every song I had to go back into that video and listen to see what I said. I do listen to every song and I have a rating system for each song which will give me a general idea about how strong the album is. However, my final assessment of an album includes each song ranking, length of the album, feel of the album, flow of the album and the transitioning and sequencing of the songs. What I was trying to say is don’t base my opinion of an album on just one or two songs, I’m listening to the entire album. I hope that helps. Thanks for listening
@@RedMugMusic Brian, when I say "rate", I mean "like", not in actual rating / ranking. We would often use the word rate for like in the UK. My fault for not being so clear.
1 seven and the ragged tiger 2 notorious 3 Liberty 4 Arcadia 14 paper Gods ( hated it) favorite newer song is “falling Down”. Favorite older song “violence of summer”
No surprises for me in your ranking! Paper Gods is a grower, Simon’s voice is amazing (play loud), but agree about cutting out one or two of the weaker tracks you mentioned. I think we have Jasmin to blame for the cover - she told Simon she loves it and so they went with it. Can’t believe I don’t have Liberty - need to fix that. On Thankyou, Simon was persuaded to do some songs out of his range by John - he should have resisted! Liked them since Planet Earth, had Arena as my only tape on a long haul flight to Malaysia. Had to drop them in the late 80s but recently revisited their catalog and I’m so impressed with their later work, Simon’s voice so much better. The use of Ordinary World in Layer Cake might have prompted me to take another look.
great choices. Big thing was in need of a fast up, and a thicker sound like you said. top3. 1. Rio. 2. Duran Duran 1981. 3. Big Thing. 4. All you need is now
My top :14 red carpet 13 all you need 12 papper gods 11 astronaut 10 pop trash 9 medazzaland 8 rio 7 liberty 6 seven and the ragged 5 Duran Duran 4 notorious 3 big thing 2 thank you 1 the weeding album...
fer canche The wedding album has some amazing songs but I struggle to place it in the top spot because of all the other songs that I just don’t like. I don’t think it’s their best effort but again, it also contains some of the best songs They’ve ever done so I see where you are coming from. Thank you for watching
Rio #8?.... I can’t even take your list serious because you have 7 and the Ragged ahead of it. That album is good to average to me besides New Moon which is one of their best.
One of my favourite bands of all time as well. Did my ranking (including Future Past) and came up with the following... 1) Rio 2) Seven And The Ragged Tiger 3) Notorious 4) All You Need Is Now 5) Astronaut 6) Duran Duran 7) Future Past 8) Red Carpet Massacre 9) Medazzaland 10) Big Thing 11) Paper Gods 12) The Wedding Album 13) Liberty 14) Pop Trash 15) Thank You.
1. Duran Duran 2. Seven and the Ragged Tiger 3. Rio 4. The Wedding Album 5. Astronaut 6. Big Thing 7. All You Need is Now 8. Liberty 9. Notorious 10. Medazzaland 11. Paper Gods 12. Red Carpet Massacre 13. Thank You 14. Pop Trash
@@RedMugMusic I was 13 and I was so excited to make that trip to the record store to get my copy the day it came out. But I was very disappointed to find that only the title track and a couple others were the only ones I could get into. I tried to get into it, but it just never happened. Nevertheless, if I were ranking Duran Duran songs, "Notorious" would be in the top five.
All you need is now...wow, if it's so high on your list I should give it another chance. Not a favorite Duran2 album for me but I LOVE their first album Duran Duran. One of my fist albums! Hard for me to pick between Rio and the first album...love them both!
Love your passion for DD. I was 11 when I first heard Planet Earth and it was hook, line and sinker for me. 40 years in the DD Army! My rankings: 14. Pop Trash 13. Thank You 12. Liberty 11. Medazzaland 10. Paper Gods 9. Astronaut 8. Arena 7. Notorious 6. Duran Duran (Wedding Album) 5. All You Need Is Now 4. Seven and the Ragged Tiger 3. Big Thing 2. Duran Duran 1. Rio
@@RedMugMusic The sound, mood and overall feel is so consistent. It's such a statement of intent for the band moving forward and keeping their DNA intact PLUS there are some stunning tracks on here. I Don't Want Your Love, Do You Believe In Shame, Edge of America are superior DD songs and still sound on point. I also rank the albums based on how I listen to them. If I can play the album from start to finish without skipping a track then it gets ranked higher. On Big Thing a rarely skip any track (maybe Drug). Surprisingly I can listen to all of Red Carpet Massacre too....not the best effort but very listenable.
Here goes .... My top 10. 10. Thank you 9. Paper Gods 8. Astronaut 7. Wedding Album 6. 7 & the Ragged Tiger 5. All you need is now 4. Notorious 3. Big Thing 2. Rio 1. Duran Duran
I agree 100% with your list and had fun guessing every entry. What a shame their back catalogue is not available on vinyl (Thank You, Medazzaland, Pop Trash, Astronaut, Red Carpet Massacre). Luckily, they are the bottom albums...
My opinion: 1.- Seven and the ragged tiger 2.- Arena 3.-Astronaut 4.-Rio 5.-Duran Duran 6.- Future past 7.-Wedding album 8.-Notorious 9.-Liberty 10.-All you need is now 11.-Big thing 12.-Paper gods 13.-Medazzaland 14.- Pop Trush
Here are my track pics from those albums (in no particular order) for anyone new: Pop Trash: Playing with Uranium, Last Day on Earth, Pop Trash Movie, Lava Lamp, Lady Xanax, and Hallucinating Elvis Medazzaland: Big Bang Generation, Out of My Mind, Electric Barbarella Astronaut: Reach Up for the Sunrise, Nice, and Virus Liberty: Liberty, My Antarctica, First Impression, and Serious Red Carpet Massacre: Skin Divers Thank You: Perfect Day, White Lines, Ball of Confusion All You Need is Now: All You Need is Now, Being Followed, Girl Panic, Blame the Machines, and Safe Notorious: Notorious, Vertigo, Proposition, and Hold Me Big Thing: I Don't Want Your Love, Land, Too Late Marlene, and Do You Believe in Shame? Wedding Album: Too Much Information, Ordinary World, Come Undone, None of the Above, Love Voodoo, and Sin of the City Paper Gods: Pressure Off Seven and the Ragged Tiger: The Reflex, New Moon on Monday, and Union of the Snake Duran Duran: Girls on Film, Planet Earth, Careless Memories, Waiting for the Night Boat Rio: Rio, Save a Prayer, New Religion Compilations: Wild Boys, Is There Something I Should Know?
The Bronze Age of DC Comics Having run through the songs I’m surprised you didn’t list “what are the chances“from paper gods album. This is in extensive list. Thanks for putting time into this. I love it.
Hi, great job, thank you! I included Arena in my ranking because loved it so much at the time. If they were to do a collection of their b-sides, that would be amazing as well. Not an album as such, but late bar, secret oktober, all I need to know, fallen Angel: such gems ! 1. So red the rose (!) 2. Arena 3. Rio 4. Duran 1981 5. Medazzaland 6. Seven 7. Big thing 8. Notorious 9. Wedding album 10. All you need is now 11. Paper gods 12. Astronaut 13. Pop trash 14. Liberty 15. Thank you 16. RCM
Excellent choice, my fave is Rio as well. John Taylor's bass lines are fantastic on this album. Save a prayer, Rio and my fave Hold Back the rain. Cheers.
Loving your channel man, thank you. Heard Hungry Like the Wolf in 82, ran out to buy Rio and never looked back. Red Carpet is awful. Also agree with 90% of your list. Also, (Also), Palimino.
I could honestly go back and forth with my number one between their debut and Rio. Both albums seem like they had no filler and each song was necessary.
@@RedMugMusic Probably the American release, because the UK version had "To The Shore" while I prefer "Is There Something I Should Know" on the US version. Unless that's incorrect, I'm not completely certain on that.
@@RedMugMusic i prefer the original uk, 'cause is there something i should know has a totally different sound and vibe than the other original song, and it kinda ruin the atmosphere. And i love to the shore.
Totally agree w u on that atmosphere thing,. But actually, the one w Is There Something was a re-issue of the debut,.well as a Duranie for almost 40 years I got all the versions..
What a great video! Thank you. Loved your critique of The Wedding Album. As with Paper Gods and AYNIN, I just feel there are simply too many tracks. If they'd come in at 8 tracks on each on these albums, they would have been much, much stronger records. My 14 ranked would be: 14. RCM 13. Pop Trash 12. Medazzaland 11. Astronaut 10. Thank You 9. The Wedding Album 8. Big Thing 7. Liberty 6. Paper Gods 5. AYNIN 4. Notorious 3. Duran Duran 2. Rio 1. SATRT Thank you again.

Preferences in music is subjective. I love Pop Trash. I had it on CD but couldn't find so I bought it on iTunes. My top 5 are Duran Duran( the UK debut release), the Wedding Album, Meddazzland, Big Thing, Rio. It's like Depeche Mode's Sounds of the Universe. Most fans hate it and I actually enjoy it.
Chances are you like what Warren brings to the table. I actually did not. I think he’s one of the worst things that ever happened to the band and made them not sound like Duran Duran anymore. However you are right, it is subjective and I try not to bring my personal ideas into how I see songs and albums. You’ll often not see me rank an album that I like the most as their number one album because I know the difference between what I like and what is actually good. For instance, I like liberty Even though I know it’s not a good album. Funny how that works.
For the most part, I agree with your rankings. Where i would disagree is your placement of Astronaut (way too low) and Notorious. I would put Astronaut much higher on the rankings. If you say you're not so familiar with the album, keep listening. It is another album that could do with resequencing the tracks. If you take Reach Up and move it to the second to last track, the album plays out much stronger. I think the better songs are in the second half. Chains, Still Breathing, What Happens Tomorrow and Point Of No Return are my favorites and the rest of the songs are still really good. To me his, this was their triumphant return. They rose from the ashes of pop trash to make this monster album. I like that they chose not to try and recreate the early 80's sound. I would put it at #4 behind the first 3 albums The album, Notorious was a huge disappointment for me when I first heard it. It grew on me over the years, but it suffers, more than any of their other albums from the awful 80's production that has ruined so much great music. I would probably put it around #7 or #8. I already gave away my top 3: #1 Rio, #2 Duran Duran, #3 Seven and the Ragged Tiger. Looking forward to the Future Past album about to be released. I feel like it's gonna be a great one. I've already heard 2 songs and they're great. BTW, I've been a fan since 1982. I also have to shout out for the songs, A View To A Kill and Wild Boys. Those are amongst my top ten Duran Duran songs and deserve more recognition. For me hey, they were the last hurrah for a very long time.
1. Rio 2. Seven and the Ragged Tiger 3. Duran Duran 4. Notorious 5. Big Thing 6. All You Need is Now 7. The Wedding Album 8. Astronaut 9. Liberty 10. Future Past 11. Red Carpet Massacre 12. Pop Trash 13. Medazzaland 14. Thank You 15. Danse Macabre 16. Paper Gods
Hi I have been a fan since i was 11 years old so nearly 40 years ago now,i'm turning 51 this November 23,i have all in my collection apart from "Medazzaland" and "Pop trash"
Fans should listen to the big thing, liberty and the wedding album in this order and it makes perfect sense what a great ride.In my opinion Notorious is very close to,"So red the rose".Should listen to them side by side and you will be surprised same kinda vibe.Listen to pop trash and medazaland same vibe.
I’m a huge DD fan, as it stands now arena is my favourite. The production is A1 plus all the instruments are all upfront. Plus the live versions of the Duran Duran songs are in many ways are better than the studio versions
Andrew Dillinger completely agree. I heard arenas version of careless memories before I heard their debut album version and thought arenas version was by far the best.
100% agree with you. By the Duran Duran their debut, their influences really shown through. Bowie, Roxymusic and dare I’d say even the band Japan featuring David Sylvain and Mick Karn. By the way John Taylor lists Mick Karn as one of his biggest influence
I’ve been a DD fan since ‘84. I agree with your assessment of “Pop Trash” and “RCM”. DD were at their low point when they made “Pop Trash”. In fact, the album should have been relabelled as being made by Nick and Warren. Songs like “Elvis” and “Uranium” and “Last Day” were unbearable to listen to. “RCM” was produced by Timbaland, a producer that does not produce bands. This guy just does beats. Some of the songs like “Valley” could have been fleshed out better. “Astronaut” should have ranked higher. It was a return to the five piece band and you could distinctively hear each member play so clearly which have been absent for at least 10 years at that point. Btw, the Jason Nevin’s remix of “Sunrise” is much better than what was on the album. The “Big Thing” album came out in the 90’s and the band was trying to capitalize on the House music scene that was popular at the time. So the songs were meant to be dance oriented. “AYNIN” was ok. To say it was a proper successor to “Rio” is a stretch. It just didn’t have that angry guitar sound that was prevalent on “Rio”. The first album is really the band’s manifesto. It showed the band’s musical roots: punk, disco, rock and electronic. The “Thank You” was good not great. The band got ragged on for some questionable song choices like “911” and “Ball of Confusion”. The best tracks were “Lay Lady Lay” and “Perfect Day” and “White Lines”.
I feel the same about Liberty but I also really liked My Antarctica, Liberty and Can You Deal With it. The rest are decent to average songs. I really love Paper Gods and thought the same about the sequence as well. Did the same as you and resequenced it also. Lol
I like an Astronaut. I was 16 when I bought it on cd! Paper Gods doesn't have a feelig that it is DD. RCM - you told true about it! )) Except first studio 5 albums I adore AYNIN. It has an influence of fresh reincarnated early 80s style of the style ) They like to experiment - this is theil + and -. hey do it too radically and people don't except it ...
For me, Astronaut is top 5: #1 Rio #2 Duran Duran (the original, not the Wedding Album) #3 Arcadia - So Red the Rose (I count it as a Duran Duran album) #4 Astronaut #5 Notorious
1st, it's refreshing to see someone with alot of the same DD thoughts/opinions that I have, ty 😊 We could easily converse for days, esp since we have quite a few differences as well 😀 I like at least 2 songs off each of their albums, unfortunately on a cpl albums those are the only I like. (Notes, these are MY personal preferences & I didn't include "Thank-You" cuz it's not their music, & no, not that great) 3) DD The Wedding Album 2) RIO 1) NOTORIOUS Now for bottom 3: 1) their worst- Pop Trash-just like you, it's trash. 2) Medazzaland 3) Seven & the Ragged Tiger.
Totaly agree Duran Duran let too many outside influences ruin there albums espically the red carpet massacre it was dreadful it wasn't worth losing Andy for he was totaly right.. Nick gets his way too many times in choices aswell over Andy I didn't blame him for leaving Duran Duran along with family matters also. The group in my opinion hasn't been the same without him espically in there concerts.
I agree about the Wedding Album, it is not that great as a whole, I prefer everything else by them except Pop Trash, but I find it baffling that nobody talks about the last track, Sin of the City. It is actually one of their best tunes, very catchy and upbeat chorus despite the dark subject of the song. Nick, John and Warren nail it. Give it a try. It is very annoying that they have so many hidden gems and b-sides which are far better than many of their singles. Looking forward to their new album, I cannot take of my head Invisible. Dead Carpet Massacre is not that great, but the two first tracks are amazing. Thanks and keep the good work.
The chorus and the whole thing: John’s bass riff, Simon’s voice, Nick’s keyboards and Warren’s mad guitar. It deserves more recognition but then again that’s Duran Duran for you. As Nile Rodgers said once, the most underrated band in history.
I'm also a massive Duran fan. I can never decide whether their first album - 'Duran Duran' or their second - 'Rio' is best but they have always been No.1 and 2. 'Seven and the Ragged Tiger' would be No.3. Red Carpet Massacre would be their worst. To be honest I'm not really a fan of much of what they did after the 80s.
The Rio era was the Duran Duran golden age, after followed with Seven and Ragged Tiger, The middle 80s was the DD silver age and beggining the 90s was a Bronze age. The DD reunion is the reborn but they are not like the first eras
Hi, my Duran rating albums system goes like this, and I find that they're so excellent in general that there's no bad bad bad for me, so the weakest ones will still have a good rating, but in relation to all those above, it'll be necessarily meagre. So, until the new CD, this is the most recent chart-system for me, but I'd also add the non-album stuff (B-sides and non-album singles collectively) too, as there's enough there to make albums from, and also "So Red The Rose" is ridiculous in its absence from this list. I mean, come on, forget the quibble of the name on the front, it IS a Duran album, far more so than that "Medazzaland" is, and that barely has John on it, so only 2 original Durans; whereas the 2 guitarists decided they WANTED to be involved in a silly US rock outfit made the correct decision to begin grafting a lovely arty Duran album, a very good idea after the disappointing "Seven And The Ragged Tiger"-great songs on that silly thing, my arse. The best songs they did that year-'Is There Something I Should Know' and 'Secret Oktober'-WAY better than the plodding, repetitive and almost meaningless choice of A-side its stuck behind aren't even ON the wretched album. I'd really have put it on there, and it IS one of Simon's best songs by his own admittance. Here's the Duran albums ratings list for me, and I'm happy to say, unlike you Mr Red Mug Duran Pop 'Trash 'Massacre (just for you). DURAN DURAN DEBUT****(9/10) 1981 RIO*****1/2 (15/10) 1982 SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER***(7/10) 1983 SO RED THE ROSE****(9/10) 1985 NOTORIOUS******(20/10) 1986 ////*career-best*//// BIG THING****(9/10) 1988 LIBERTY*****1/2 (15/10) 1990 THE WEDDING ALBUM****(9/10) 1993 THANK YOU***(6/10) 1995 MEDAZZALAND***(7/10) 1997 POP TRASH*****(10/10) 2000 ASTRONAUT****(8/10) 2004 RED CARPET MASSACRE******(20/10) 2007 ////*career best*//// ALL YOU NEED IS NOW******(20/10) 2011 ////*career best*//// PAPER GODS****(9/10) 2015 FUTURE PAST-------------------------------------------------------------------------------TBA COMPLETE 80S UNALBUMED STUFF (1981-1989)****(8/10) *As there's no clear list of any other songs from the following decades, I can't rate these collectively. The ladder of importance = best on the top rung and so on: General Rule: more rungs a ladder has, the weaker an act's works are! TOP RUNG: "Notorious"/"Red Carpet Massacre"/"All You Need Is Now": all joint $$$*career best*$$$ 1st rung down: "Rio" & "Liberty": both joint $$*runners-up*$$ 2nd rung down: "Pop Trash": sole bottom of $*top-rated*$ 3rd rung down: "Duran Duran Debut"/"So Red The Rose"/"Big Thing"/"The Wedding Album"/"Paper Gods" jointly 4th rung down: "Complete 80s Unalbumed" & "Astronaut" jointly 5th rung down: " Seven And The Ragged Tiger" & "Medazzaland" jointly 6th rung down: "Thank You". NOTES: *I added 'Late Bar' & 'Fame' to bulk up the playlist for the debut, otherwise just 8 songs, ridiculous, but doesn't improve rating. *"Rio" is amazing, but a bit of a no-brainer for most people-I sometimes feel why even do a list if this is always going to head it. *While I like no less than 10 songs an album, extra 1982 track 'Like An Angel' so God-awful, thank God it didn't occur on "Rio"! *Bloody 3rd album-if it wasn't done back then when all 5 were there, how would keep overrating it all the time?! *Bloody 3rd album is technically the band's weakest album by far, considering that unlike late 90s, ALL members present-excuse? *Bloody 3rd album is SO not full of good songs. They're generally meaningless, not escapist and remixed 'til little essence remains. *Bloody 3rd album almost SO inept, I need to ADD their best 1983 song to it-a B-SIDE!! as only album I couldn't get a 1st fave on it! *Bloody 3rd album so messed up, their best 1983 single 'Is There Something I Should Know' not even on it! *Bloody 3rd album so buggered single-wise that one of their worst ever-'Union' SHOULD have been 'Secret Oktober's' B-side!! *Bloody 3rd album forever sounds stuck in a time-warp, and not in as good way. All later albums FAR more contemporary all over! *Bloody 3rd album is the one that should be known LEAST over the far better ones after it. Life is never fair in any department. *"So Red The Rose" is really called DURAN DURAN's "Arcadia: So Red The Rose". It's CLEARLY a Duran album for many, get over it! *If it wasn't for the FAR SUPERIOR "So Red" following their worst record yet (YES, people!), we'd have a 3 YEAR WAIT for the next! *"Notorious" super-perfect; what can I say, and twice as perfect as the already 2x perfect "Rio", AND it has 10 songs on it! *And unlike appalling 'Like An Angel', no extra filler thing needed to be added. Duran, despite R&A void, delivered a platinum wow! *Lovely to hear "Big Thing" compliments for a change, it IS an amazing record, though I think you forgot to mention 'Land'. *How are "Big Thing" singles "too dancey" when you like Duran upbeat and there 1981-1984 rose-tinted period ALL dancey?!
Everyone has their own opinion......I been ahuge fan from 1980 I have got all off Duran Duran albums collection even classic 12inches and others. In my opinion the wedding album wasn't certainly one of there worse as they had two brilliant hit songs Ordinary World and Come Undone I thought personaly',The red carpet', album wasn't great as it certainly wasn't worth it losing there lead guitarist Andy Taylor for, over American artists Justin Timberlake and Timberland Duran Duran shouldn't let outside influences ruin there albums Andy Taylor was so right.I feel Duran Duran sometimes make some wrong decisions on choosing releases from some off there albums.Duran Duran are very underrated artist's of my generation should be in the music hall of fame 20 + years ago.....
As I said in my upcoming video, I would place that album in the top 5. When I redo the ranking after Future Past comes out, I should include Arcadia and Arena as well. Make it fun!!
Rio is one of the best pop album in rock history ever. Still today it is magical.
Absolutely
Yes, that's so true
But "Notorious" is even better, and should take the crown for the 80s, and to me they've matched that amazing feat twice since in separate decades. So not an 80s act only and while "Rio" is amazing, it's not the top. That's just the easy thing to say.
Justin Timberlake should NEVER have anything to do with Duran Duran.
I totally agree with you about the Wedding album
NEVER EVER
I think Astronaut is one of DD's best albums. Rio is undoubtedly the best album in the history of music. DD's music is the soundtrack of my life.
No doubt about it..RIO is absolute perfection.
Astronaut, no.
Thank you Renee
Guess what I'm offended, pffft what kind of fan is this guy?
I think you had have mention "So Red The Rose" as it had more Duran members than Poptrash and Medazzaland. so its kinda considered a Duran LP
I consider it a DD record.
@@TheChadTI Me, too.
@@itsisk2043 Its so imprinted that way in my mind whenever I see a discography list or images I'm always like "Where is the best one?"😁🤙
Seven and the ragged tiger is my fav!
Kickflip McTwist I’ve been listening to that one a lot lately. Great album!
Amazing album, it's my favorite too! I love Cracks in the Pavement and Tiger Tiger
@@foganewgon Both are great!!!
My top 5:
1 Duran Duran (1981)
2 Rio
3 Seven And The Ragged Tiger
4 So Red The Rose (I know, it’s an Arcadia album)
5 Arena
Pop Trash is a terrific record. If you skip it, you're missing out. It's lightyears better than Big Thing.
Rio and All you need is now,
is two of the Best Albums of all Time.
But Notorios is just , i believe, the most accomplished duran duran album, and i think it is an album the band has been trying to get back to, in terms of sound, it is such a gem and also a very underrated album
Thank you for the video.
That excites me that you like notorious as much as you do. It is my favorite album. Thanks for the comment and I appreciate you watching my video
Wow, Cem, that's is so great that you found Duran Duran as a nice segway to learning English! It just goes to show that talent in the music area knows no boundaries.
@@webefab thank you:)
Notorious came out in November 1986.
Yes RIO ist the best Duran Duran Album for all Time. And one of the Best Album of modern Music for Alltime.
' Ordinary World' is still a masterpiece
8) Thank You - It's not as bad as they say!
Great guitar work too
12) Red Carpet Massacre- Timbaland! nuff said!
13) Medazzaland - Still better than Pop Trash! Nice electronic buzz all over ...' Electric Barbarella and Out of My Mind are great songs though!
14) Paper Gods- Horrific album cover, but personally it just doesn't gel
15) Pop Trash - Pop Trash.
Someone that actually loves My Antarctica! Thank you!
Obviously lifelong Duran fans are going to disagree on some but THANK YOU for ranking Notorious so highly - I LOVE that album. The B side of Big Thing is a masterpiece.
I’m going through all of the Duran Duran albums so make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss my review on notorious and big thing.
Pop Trash is one of their best. It's got some great rock songs on it.
You like the songs I hate and you hate all the songs I love...
We'd never get along. Here's my list 1 - 14
01. Rio
02. Duran Duran
03. The Wedding Album
04. Seven and the Ragged Tiger
05. Medazzaland
06. Notorious
07. Pop Trash
08. Paper Gods
09. Big Thing
10. All You Need Is Now
11. Red Carpet Massacre
12. Astronaut
13. Thank You
14. Liberty
We both like Duran Duran and that’s all it takes.
Liberty at 14 💀
I’m really enjoying your channel.
So was I, and I totally agree.
It’s my pleasure Tex. . Thanks for watching
Thanks for the ranking, brings back memory's!
Don't realy have a favorite album. All of them are just part of my life and history.
I did not listened to Duran Duran the last years, but youre video's brought them back in my life.
Thank You!
Well make sure you’re subscribed because I’ll be reviewing more Duran Duran albums for weeks to come.
Yeah I saw that you liked astronaut at number four. Are used to not like that album but I’m liking it more and more of the time I listen to it
Liberty, a perfect 10. I'm a huge fan of it all.
I agree 👍
Having been a fan since April 1981 I have to rank my top 5 as follows:-
Some of my other favourite tracks are :-
Liberty
Too late Marlene
Safe
The Valley
2 great songs that should've been on albums are Late Bar and Beautiful colours.
You like Power Station that much? Wow!!! I love the list. Seeing Notorious that high is awesome. I just love that album.
Notorious number 1? I love this!
@@RedMugMusic yes !! Notorious my number one !! Duran Duran my Band favority !! Thanks for The vídeo
Yes !! Notorious my number one !! DURAN DURAN MY BAND FAVORITY !! THANKS FOR THE VIDEO
7 Wedding Album...love!
6 Big Thing ...I'm a fan of this album and I'm so happy I got to see them live on the tour for that album.
I love Falling Down, so much that I cannot rank RCM last.
What do you rank last?
for me, it's "Box Full O' Honey" and "Dirty Great Monster"
I'm a big fan of Notorious too! What a fun album! Saw them live back them too. And we all agree Rio is their best. New Religion, Save a Prayer... Wow!!!! ❤️
Really enjoyed your video...thanks!
🎶 I'm a big fan of the Band & Particularly love the music they did with Warren but I love all their Music 🎵
Great job!!
Love it
Love the experimental tone
Love that they used to produce a lot of it. Like medazzaland
My Duran Duran Top 10
1 Notorious
2 Rio
3 Astronaut
4 Paper Gods
5 All you need is now
6 Liberty
7 Big Thing
8 Seven and the ragged tiger
9 Red carpet massacre
10 Duran Duran
I agree 100% with you as a huge fan of Duran Duran .
I just became a DD fan a year ago (started October 2019) and I love them. My most favorite album from them is Notorious (even though Rio is the album that made me became their fan).
I agree with you when it comes to their album All You Need Is Now. Fantastic album they ever made in 21st Century.
Pop Trash Movie is a very good song from Pop Trash.
How do you listen to music? CDs?
@@RedMugMusic All sources, CDs, vinyl, Spotify, iPod and I even have a few cassettes. No 8 tracks though, 🤣
Rio
😮
Controversial but here we go :
1 : Rio
2 : Duran 81
3 : So Red The Rose (Don't start!)
4 : Notorious
5 : 33 1/3 (Again .. shhh)
That's it - All of these albums are pure perfection and it's a testament to the band that they can commission 5 absolute classic albums in their career.
It''s about the same as U2 (5 Great albums).
Honourable mentions to :
Seven & The Ragged Tiger, Big Thing & Medazzaland (Purely for "Got To Get You Out Of My Mind" which is beautiful) and Wedding for the two big singles but these 4 albums are patchy with moments of sheer brilliance.
Greetings from South America!!
...and they're not done yet!!!
Dom solid too
Serious is my favourite song EVER ❤️
So Red The Rose is an amazing album. I love the way you think.
8 Madazzaland. Really good album, yes! Lot of great songs in there! Midnight Sun and Out of my Mind...two of my top favorite Duran2 songs!
OK well that’s good to know. I’ll keep that in mind when talking with my UK friends. Thanks for the clarification
Notorious is my favourite album (not only just DD albums) but ALL TIME.
We are definitely friends
“Should have resisted”. Lol.
great choices. Big thing was in need of a fast up, and a thicker sound like you said.

fer canche The wedding album has some amazing songs but I struggle to place it in the top spot because of all the other songs that I just don’t like.

Respectable list. Not high on Notorious?

Thanks Jim. What is the draw for Big Thing? You ranked it very high.

Don’t be sorry. I’d prefer to like it all.
RCM hmmmm...I was just pretending not to hate that album.
Hi, great job, thank you! I included Arena in my ranking because loved it so much at the time. If they were to do a collection of their b-sides, that would be amazing as well. Not an album as such, but late bar, secret oktober, all I need to know, fallen Angel: such gems !

I know decade isn’t really an album but come on it is brilliant
I could honestly go back and forth with my number one between their debut and Rio. Both albums seem like they had no filler and each song was necessary.
pdssrGaming do you prefer UK release debut or American release debut?
@@RedMugMusic Probably the American release, because the UK version had "To The Shore" while I prefer "Is There Something I Should Know" on the US version. Unless that's incorrect, I'm not completely certain on that.

I like this ranking. Notorious number one? I love it. If I were so bold to put it as number one like you. Thanks for watching
Rio I agree favourite album hated my own way album song single Faster single miles better love it.
Ranking Duran Duran is akin to ranking the Osmonds, they are a boy band for 13 year old girls. Some folks in the USA are not aware of this.
Of your opinion? I’m sure you’re right.

Hi I have been a fan since i was 11 years old so nearly 40 years ago now,i'm turning 51 this November 23,i have all in my collection apart from "Medazzaland" and "Pop trash"
Happy upcoming birthday!
My top 3 are . 1 Duran Duran 81 . 2 Rio . 3 Big Thing. The best tracks i think have to be the 12inch versions of Planet Earth and My own way.
Exactly... and I agree about Notorious and So Red The Rose. Maybe my two favorites.
Great synopsis.
One quick note: "Big Thing" was released in 1988, Duran being perhaps a step ahead of the house scene.
Great stuff!
I agree with your comments on liberty-apart from serious which is a stonking track-the rest of the album is poor to middling at best
I feel the same about Liberty but I also really liked My Antarctica, Liberty and Can You Deal With it. The rest are decent to average songs. I really love Paper Gods and thought the same about the sequence as well. Did the same as you and resequenced it also. Lol
That’s amazing. I’m not the only one. Lol
I like an Astronaut. I was 16 when I bought it on cd! Paper Gods doesn't have a feelig that it is DD. RCM - you told true about it! ))
Except first studio 5 albums I adore AYNIN. It has an influence of fresh reincarnated early 80s style of the style )
They like to experiment - this is theil + and -. hey do it too radically and people don't except it ...
For me, Astronaut is top 5:
#1 Rio
#2 Duran Duran (the original, not the Wedding Album)
#3 Arcadia - So Red the Rose (I count it as a Duran Duran album)
#4 Astronaut
#5 Notorious
Very nice list.
Don’t forget to subscribe and you’ll see me cover all these albums
My favorite is Rio with Notorious in second.
My third is seven and the ragged tigger.
I’m always so happy to see notorious as number one. I just love that album. Thank you so much
I agree regarding “Red Carpet Massacre” . I think Timbaland Sucks. He did Chris Cornell no favors. Cornell’s voice was all that mattered !
Is it the chorus you like so much on the song sin of the city? It’s VERY good.
Liberty is an ok album ...I love Serious. Wow, so far I totally agree with your rating album order.
MY TOP 5
1. All you need is now
2. Rio
3. Seven and the ragged tiger
4. Duran Duran
5. Paper Gods
The Rio era was the Duran Duran golden age, after followed with Seven and Ragged Tiger, The middle 80s was the DD silver age and beggining the 90s was a Bronze age. The DD reunion is the reborn but they are not like the first eras
Great list, really great. For me though Seven and the Rag...ed Tiger is my number 1. Good job.
Thank you Alan

*As there's no clear list of any other songs from the following decades, I can't rate these collectively.
The ladder of importance = best on the top rung and so on: General Rule: more rungs a ladder has, the weaker an act's works are!
TOP RUNG: "Notorious"/"Red Carpet Massacre"/"All You Need Is Now": all joint $$$*career best*$$$
1st rung down: "Rio" & "Liberty": both joint $$*runners-up*$$
2nd rung down: "Pop Trash": sole bottom of $*top-rated*$
3rd rung down: "Duran Duran Debut"/"So Red The Rose"/"Big Thing"/"The Wedding Album"/"Paper Gods" jointly
4th rung down: "Complete 80s Unalbumed" & "Astronaut" jointly
5th rung down: " Seven And The Ragged Tiger" & "Medazzaland" jointly
6th rung down: "Thank You".
NOTES:
*I added 'Late Bar' & 'Fame' to bulk up the playlist for the debut, otherwise just 8 songs, ridiculous, but doesn't improve rating.
I think “Liberty” gets a bad rap . My fav on that album is “Venice Drowning “. Such an incredible song .
i've always thought the same. i like read my lips and venice drowning the best but i love the entire album.
my antarctica is great also

I would hope so....
