- Today I am happy to bring you a demo of the 385 from Walrus Audio. It's an overdrive pedal unlike anything I've ever played through! Based on a 1950's Bell and Howell 385 film projector amp section - which is a dual 6v6 tube driven magical beast that consts of just two controls... Volume and Tone. It's extrememly touch responsive and might be one of my favorite drives I've ever played through. It's quirky, it's fun - let's take it for a spin!
Best demo on this pedal on UA-cam! This is exactly what I wanted to see and hear from this pedal. The dynamics on this are crazy.
Just got this pedal today and your description is exactly right. It’s as essential as a Klon or tube screamer.

Very cool, saw the TPS Walrus interview episode yesterday. Charming young fellows!
There's a few cool things going on here electronically, not the least of which is JFEts with some funky asymmetrical biasing which makes that phase-y breakup you call chewy. It's also voiced so it sounds like you're pushing signal thru an 8" speaker thats caving in on itself. Too good!
It's amazing how they got ahold of that particular sound of 6V6 push-pull power tube break up.
One of the most unique pedals I’ve ever played. It’s so dynamic and feels great under the fingers.
@@markhopkinsmusic Cool, sensi/touchy like a blackface Champ, love that stuff
I love how "fuzzy" it gets when the gain is cranked. It's a very unique fuzz sound, kinda vintage, even tho it's an OD pedal
Nice video!
It’s a surprising little box of joy. I use it all the time now!
I've had my eye on this pedal for weeks. After all the reading and vid watching, this one made my decision easy.
Thank you Mr. Hopkins. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much, you’re gonna love it!
Man!!! Great demo!!! The pedal sounds great but most important you did a great job showing it and made me believe you like it a lot. 👍🏾👍🏾
I absolutely love it! Such a unique pedal
I love my 385! Got rid of my janray and so happy. Great with Drri.
You won’t believe this but I did the same thing!
@@markhopkinsmusic same thing with Timmy. Gone! The 385 just hangs around due to versatility, dynamics and how it sounds with my amps. The other drive that hangs around is my strymon Riverside.
Great review! I've personally never took the 385 off of my board. It's now set up with a revv g2 pushing the front (kind of like a tube screamer). I use the 385 for my 'clean tone' roll back the volume on my tele and when I want some proper dirt I have an ocd clone to push it. Sounds so smooth!
it's a sleeper pedal secret weapon for sure!
Just bought one. Coming today!!! Watching this vid to pump me up. Definitely the best one on YT. Had my eye on it for a long while. Blake Mills tones…yes please! Heigh Ho is one of my all time faves. It seems like a crazy versatile and unique drive, and def a sleeper. Appreciate you making this and letting the world know how capable it is!
That means a lot to me, thank you so much!
Somewhere around 2 or 3 o'clock on the gain knob on this pedal were always my favorite settings when I tested it back when it launched. I liked how raw it sounded even with all that distortion. Probably the only solid state pedal that sounds like valve gain I've ever played. The EQ knobs also were tuned really well, if I remember. You can dial it in so that it doesn't crowd out the vocal range in a live setting or a mix without disappearing.
Really, really good. I think this was one of the pedals I would have bought if I hadn't forced myself to stop when I counted and realized I had 50 pedals.
Definitely my favorite Walrus overdrive pedal! It's in a league of its own for sure. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic demo of the pedal but also makes me want a strat! I love seeing strats played by people who are insanely comfortable with them. 🔥 Also, shout-out to the Moose Jaw hoodie!
Thanks so much Christopher! Dude, that Strat is a monster- had to sell 2 guitars to get it, but no regrets here! The Hoodie... well, it's my fave!
DUDE!! The jams you played were soooo tasty! I rarely get inspired or movin from gear demo playthroughs, but that got me goin lol
Man, thank you so so much!!
Really tasteful playing
Thank You so much, that means a lot!
Another excellent video, brotha!
Thanks duuuuuuuuude!!!
Awesome dynamic pedal
It truly is one of the best out there!
Excellent video, I like the way you go about explaining and describing it as you go. You're right about Walrus' approach to this pedal. I've always been intrigued by it but they haven't said anything to push me to spend the money on it yet. Let's see what happens here. I'm into the 250, red Llama, Bluesbreaker type things with different mild colorings of their own. Maybe this could be the one? Finally?
I love this pedal - it's so diverse and reacts so well to your volume - I think you'd dig it. I still have it and it's one of my boards :-)
@@markhopkinsmusic Thanks. When I said "Maybe this could be the one" I meant the video to get me to buy it. There will never be "the one" overdrive for me. (ha ha) Overdrive is an effect that is really strange that way. I also have a Lounsberry Toy Robot and a JHS Haunting MIds and they all get a turn at bat. Once again, nice job.
@@deanallen927 haha, so true. It’s a “collect em all” problem I have. But in all seriousness, thanks for watching and engaging, it means a lot.
Wicked vibrato!
Thanks!!
Your intro solo was crazy good! I'm trying to learn them though wanted to ask if the backing track are available on UA-cam?
I believe that was an Andertons track I downloaded a while back. I think they have those on their website or via iTunes now. Lots of fun tracks to play alonng to in that pack I got :-) Thanks for watching and commenting it means a lot to me!
I'd be curious to know what you would think of the 'Twin Twelve' which is sometimes compared with the 385.
I’ll see if I can find one! Might be fun to do a shootout between those two
15:43 caught it
Blake Mills tune called “If I’m Unworthy “. You gotta check it out, it’s a brilliant tune.
It's got a soft malleable attack that's warm, smooth but also very articulate. It's GUMMY
All perfect adjectives for this box of Joy! I wish more people knew about this pedal, it's amazing!
