+Learn Cantonese with CantoneseClass101.com Thanks! I've been practicing Wing Chun for over 3 years now, and meanwhile why not learn some Chinese culture and a new language as well as the martial art? First, I wanted to say the technique names right, then I realized that maybe I'll end up in Hong Kong someday to train with really good Sifus, or even here in New York, there are a lot of Cantonese speakers. So why not take this chance to learn a new language and make more friends? This is where you come in and you're help is tremendous already!
+Ali Kutluozen That's awesome!! Very good motivation for building your language and Wing Chun skills! Wishing you all the best! :D

Hi, I have a question and I don't know at which video I should ask. So, I'm going to put my question here (because it's slightly relevant) and hopefully you can help me further.
When I want to say that I know something I (almost) always use 知道 but I don't understand why 道 is used as simply 知 would have sufficed. The same goes for 味. I could say "有咩味呀?" or "有咩味道呀?", they seem interchangable. So the question is what does 道 mean in this context or why is it used. On the other hand, 道 can express 'awareness'. Compare 見 with 見道, and 聞 with 聞道. But that doesn't seem to be the case with the first two examples. I hope my question is clear. Any help is much appreciated.
Good question! Generally speaking we usually use 知 in colloquial and 知道 in written or formal situation. We tend to shorten in colloquial and use 2-character terms in written or formal forms. 道 also means "skill; technique", so 知道 could roughly refer to "the ability to know"; and 味道 "the ability to taste". So you're right to say that they are interchangeable with their shorter versions in most situations.
唔該!
i have a question! i see ji sang is doctor, but i've also heard dai fu, is it the same?
dai fu is for ancient time, so we usually here it in movies. Nowadays, we usually call western doctors ji1 sang1, and doctors who practice traditional chinese medicine ji1 si1.
Hi, a question - when you are asking about the Indian resto, you have ge3 as 蠍-- maybe that should be 嘅? My dictionary gives me koi3 for 蠍. Thanks!
I'm a bit confused, because I learnt that house is 'nguk1', but here home is 'uk1 kei5' with the same character for 'house'. Why way of pronunciation is the correct one, then? Thx in advance!
Hi Mind Bending,
Good question! The extra 'ng' in front is the result of hypercorrection.
While some people pronounce 'ngo' as 'o' (omitting the important 'ng') because of the "lazy tongue" culture; others mistakenly add 'ng' to sounds that don't really them.
Feel free to ask if you have any other questions.

This was fun. We all want to know up to date vocabulary. And please tell me the word for "boots" in current Cantonese. I heard already that it could be 靴 hoe, or 鉢 but. In Tokyo, we say ロングブーツ long boots, for boots that are not super tall, just ordinary boots, up to the knee or below. What word do you use to describe that in modern Cantonese?
We just use 靴 (hoe1) or English BOOT for normal boots, and 長boot (coeng4 BOOT) for longer boots (eg. over the knee); for short boots or ankle boots, we call them 短靴 (dyun2 hoe1) or 短Boot.
Thanks! Now I'll be ready when the boots season comes back!
jan4 alone but jan2 with naam5 or neoi5?
Good catch! That's correct! :)
Foogafoog Yeah, I just noticed the same thing.

Just out of interest. What is the difference between mandarin and Cantonese?
They are two different dialects under the Chinese language. Some people compare them similar to the relationship between Spanish and Portuguese.
