    I hate to say it, but most people have no clue that the parking brake is supposed to be used since most automatically believe their automatic transmission put in park is "good enough" (no pun intended). Even worse, I know some people that never park their manual transmission vehicle in gear, despite it being law in many states.
    On older Subaru vehicles (specifically, a majority of them with a Subaru EA or ER engine), they're installed in the front disc brakes. I'm glad that Subaru switched it to the traditional rear parking brake.

      Yep, I remember having a few of those old Subies in the shop for brake work --- very strange! Subaru has come a very long way over the years, from strange, quirky, lots of problems to one of the more desirable and reliable cars today.Pat

    In zero degree temps or colder I was told not to use the parking brake because it could freeze from the cold and stay engaged. I don't know if this still applies today. Been tuning into Pat for years and years!

    A very informative video! A couple things about parking brakes:
    1) It should be noted that only automatic transmissions have parking pawls. Manuals don't have them at all, making the use of the parking brake mandatory.
    2) Do parking brake cables need to be lubricated at all? I've always wondered if using them regularly (which I do) necessitates occasional lubrication.
    3) Do parking brake cables stretch with use? I've adjusted mine once already due to what seemed excessive travel of the parking brake lever, and it seems like it may need another adjustment soon. I have to give it a firm lift to get the brake to keep the car from rolling on a hill (my car is a manual).
    4) Somewhat related to #3, do the shoes in a drum-in-hat parking brake ever need adjustment or replacement?

      A. So true but we see so few manuals any more that we rarely discuss them, Sorry for the omission.
      Q. Do parking brake cables need to be lubricated at all? I've always wondered if using them regularly (which I do) necessitates occasional lubrication.
      A. Most cannot be lubricated and even if they can be grease and oil attract and
      hold dirt particles which over time cause the cable to stick and bind. It is the
      job of the plastic sleeve inside the outer housing to keep the cable moving
      smoothly. It is this plastic sleeve that galls and causes sticking if the brake
      is not used.
      Q. Do parking brake cables stretch with use? I've adjusted mine once already due to what seemed excessive travel of the parking brake lever, and it seems like it may need another adjustment soon. I have to give it a firm lift to get the brake to keep the car from rolling on a hill (my car is a manual).
      A. Yes cables do stretch with use and do require periodic adjustment.
      Q. Somewhat related to #3, do the shoes in a drum-in-hat parking brake ever need adjustment or replacement?
      A. Yes they may need adjustment (some are not adjustable) and shoes do need replacement. Most replacements are due to corrosion and from moisture causing the friction material to loosen and fall off the metal shoe. Periodic inspection is a great idea.

    Hey Pat, do a segment on Brake Light Switches & fuses. That caused me a hard time on my 2005 Suzuki Forenza sedan. (4 cylinder engine, automatic transmission).
    The Parking shift used to get stuck & the brake lights used to stay on/off at times, especially when going downhill.
    The Brake Light Switch inside the brake pedal got worn out.

    On my Subaru, I need to change the parking brake shoes and I've been putting it off because it's a giant PITA and best left for when it needs rear rotors anyway.

      Understand that! Most parking brake shoes that use the center hat of the rotor as a drum are a royal pain --- even in a shop setting with all the tools.

    I found out my parking brake doesn't work the hard way. I was going on vacation and in a hurry so I jacked it up at the top of my driveway. The second the front wheels came off the ground the car took off on the jack all the way down the driveway. Luckily I kept hold of the handle of the jack and down the driveway we went but I was able to steer the car to the side onto the gravel pad next to the bottom of the driveway where it stopped because then it was facing uphill a little and the jack stopped in the gravel. The marks from the steel jack wheels are still in my driveway 2.5 years later, they are lighter than the surrounding concrete.

      There’s a lesson here! Most of us in the repair business have done something like this and consequently learned the value of wheel chocks!

    Two of my cars have, I think, "electric" parking brakes: i.e. I pull a small plastic lever on the console with my finger. It sounds like an electric motor engages and sets the brake. Is that whats happening? To disengage the brake I push that same lever with one finger.

      You have it nailed that’s exactly how electric parking brakes work. The switch controls an electric motor that moves the brake pads into contact with the brake rotors. Electric parking brakes are becoming more popular every year and will likely dominate the market in a few years.

    Most say fuck the parking brakes and eliminate them removing the shoes and hardware if they don't have the rear brake calipers with the screw in piston.

      WA:Wouldn’t fly here as it would be an immediate failure for inspection so I’m not sure I agree with your “most”. Of course there are always a few lunatics who do crazy stuff like that but “most” --- don’t think that is 100% accurate. Thanks again for your comments!Pat
